Protections needed to stop monkeypox?

With news today that 57 cases of money pox have been discovered in the U.K., should we be putting some protections/mitigations in place to slow the spread and make sure the NHS can cope?

I don’t think lockdown would be appropriate at this stage but should the government be implementing things like mask mandates, social distancing, the rule of 6 and bans on indoor socialising and large events?

Surely we’ve learned from covid that it’s important to act early to prevent the need for more restrictions later?

This is a god send for the people that love a lockdown

Not really. I largely supported lockdown during covid. It would be utterly bonkers to have the rules that the op seems to want.

Must be a wind up though.

I'm covering myself in polythene and making a shelter out of all my interior doors where I've stockpiled tinned goods and a wind up radio.
My delivery of loo roll from various supermarkets is en route.
Is there anything else I should be doing?

Giant Hamster ball for when you go out.

We know that monkey pox spreads through close contact so surely social distancing would help prevent people being close together?

No one is calling for full lockdown but surely putting in a few light touch mitigations and asking people to limit indoor mixing and close contact would help?

Indoor mixing? If you rub against someone with Monkeypox what does it matter if you're out in the fresh air or not? You are definitely confusing this with something called Covid.

My post was reported and deleted for being homophobic. I wasn't being homophobic (although I was being flippant towards the OP who I really think has nothing to be concerned about). My post was based on a quote from the UK Health Security Agency which was on the BBC website. I quote 'The UKHSA has said a notable proportion of early cases has been detected in gay and bisexual men and has urged members of those communities in particular to be alert.' Dont screw a stranger?

CoralPaperweight · 23/05/2022 21:03

FWIW Monkeypox is not an STD and it is also spread by respiratory droplets ie close contact, not just skin to skin

Just wear a condom if you find yourself having sex with random men and you should be OK.

A condom would not prevent you from getting monkeypox during sex as you have more skin to skin contact than just your genitals. Don't spread misinformation when you have no idea 😂😂

OP: "I don't think lockdowns would be appropriate"

Posters: "No lockdowns! Fuck off! Lockdown lovers!!"

The reading comprehension is appalling.

Yep 🙄
It's like these posters are just waiting to swoop at the mere mention of the word, whatever the context. It's so 'knee jerk'.

Complete overreaction whilst complaining about an overreaction

CoralPaperweight · 23/05/2022 21:10

And this is why I'm despairing - 2 years of Covid and we still cannot get clear health messages to the general public.

PinkPiranha11 · 23/05/2022 21:12

You do know monkey pox isn’t airborne don't you Op? Masks would do precisely nothing. Bet you’re gutted we’ve all stopped acting like crazy lunatics over covid.

Ugzbugz · 23/05/2022 21:12

No no no. Who is going to pay for all the loss of earnings in pubs, restaurants, theatres etc.??????

Rule of 6 is the most stupid pointless thing.

VladmirsPoutine · 23/05/2022 21:14

I do think if it spreads we must have to learn the lessons of last time. I personally had no issue with social distancing or masks. Having said that I really can't cope with another pandemic.

Gudbrand · 23/05/2022 21:16

"Moneypox" - that'll be about right....
I'm in a country in Europe and we've already had our government wittering on about bring back covid regulations because of "moneypox" and discussing purchasing small pox vaccines.
Yeah... it's moneypox alright.... they are so fucking corrupt - they can see the euro signs everywhere. So many of the fuckers have made an absolute fortune out of the pandemic.

No mention in the media here of it being transmitted by sexual contact - that wouldn't fit the narrative of us all needing to go and get small pox vaccines. That'll be the next vaccine which becomes compulsory - they made a compulsory covid vaccine law here and have now had to "put it on ice" due to various factors I won't go into here.

FFS.

You personally might not have, people who run businesses that can't realistically put social distancing measures in place might have a problem with it.

toomuchlaundry · 23/05/2022 21:18

If it is spread by respiratory droplets would a medical mask help?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/05/2022 20:42

OP actually said 'I don’t think lockdown would be appropriate at this stage' not that they aren't appropriate at all.

Yes the OP reads pretty clearly that they consider lockdown a viable option and one that they’d support should the monkey pox “problem” intensify.

I hate how quickly there is a jump towards lockdown lite - rule of 6, social distancing etc. Is this it then, forever? Every time there is the vaguest hint of anything we’ll start calling on the government to lock us in again?
Rule of 6 was so completely arbitrary anyway.

did we have the smallpox vaccine as kids or am i thinking of something else

Gudbrand country beginning with A by any chance?

OneTC · 23/05/2022 21:22

Not according to the Dr on a phone in today. It is shared by skin to skin contact but is not an STD.

Nor is scabies but sexual contact makes up a large percentage of the people that catch it

Or we have learnt that panic and decisions based on emotion and no fact, result in a decimated economy, thousands of preventable secondary deaths, children with mental and learning difficulties, familes on the poverty line.
