Protections needed to stop monkeypox?

With news today that 57 cases of money pox have been discovered in the U.K., should we be putting some protections/mitigations in place to slow the spread and make sure the NHS can cope?

I don’t think lockdown would be appropriate at this stage but should the government be implementing things like mask mandates, social distancing, the rule of 6 and bans on indoor socialising and large events?

Surely we’ve learned from covid that it’s important to act early to prevent the need for more restrictions later?

It's spread by skin to skin contact and blood/sexually. Masks are irrelevant

WiseRobin · 23/05/2022 21:24

Boris will be encouraging Monkeypox parties 🎉

So glad I kept those 4000 bog rolls in the garage

We know that monkey pox spreads through close contact so surely social distancing would help prevent people being close together?

No one is calling for full lockdown but surely putting in a few light touch mitigations and asking people to limit indoor mixing and close contact would help?

Is this a wind up? I think you need to read up on it, sit around a table of 7 people or face masks will not stop it spreading because it won’t be spreading that way anyway.

BarbaraofSeville · 23/05/2022 21:25

I genuinely can't tell whether or not the OP is being serious. It reads like a piss take, but it also sounds like they actually believe what they are writing.

tootiredtoocare · 23/05/2022 21:26

It's a mild illness. They were just hoping to keep it away, that's all, as we haven't had it before. Unfortunately it looks like we've got it in the general population now.

Notcontent · 23/05/2022 21:26

It’s not an STD. It’s pretty clear that what has happened is that first transmission was between some men who just happened to be gay and must have spread it to others. But it can just as easily be spread by someone sneezing on you.

No need to panic BUT I heard a scientist saying we need to contain it so that it doesn’t become a virus that we regularly have to contend with. I am not sure about other people, but I don’t fancy being covered with horrible pustules….

Blimeyherewegoagain · 23/05/2022 21:30

It’s like chicken pox only the spots are bigger 🤷‍♀️.
The small pox vaccine they resurrected to combat it supposedly has a big risk of myocarditis as a side effect.
We’ve become afraid of allowing our immune systems to do the job for which it was made.

OneTC · 23/05/2022 21:30

I do think if it spreads we must have to learn the lessons of last time. I personally had no issue with social distancing or masks. Having said that I really can't cope with another pandemic.

Considering the Spanish flu was still running strong in 1919 we actually had 4 pandemic events of an equivalent scale or greater than covid.

You're statistically likely to experience about 3 I reckon, on an average lifespan

Iflyaway · 23/05/2022 21:30

Boris will be encouraging Monkeypox parties 🎉

See a typo there.

I say Moneypox parties.....

Firefly1987 · 23/05/2022 21:30

I don't have any kids yet so personally I'm not worried. Being there is a child in intensive care with it and it's severe in pregnant women I would think it's potentially quite a worry for parents.

Blimeyherewegoagain · 23/05/2022 21:31

It’s spread by skin contact not aerosol, I believe.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 23/05/2022 21:34

Cone on then @Like , explain to us all exactly what effect each of those measures would have on monkeypox - specifically monkeypox, not just viruses in general - and why.

We’ll wait.

Cas112 · 23/05/2022 21:05

A condom would not prevent you from getting monkeypox during sex as you have more skin to skin contact than just your genitals. Don't spread misinformation when you have no idea 😂😂

It would if you'd followed the Covid Safe Sex guidence 😂
Face away from each other, minimise contact and breathing. Masks.
Maybe it was drawn up by Matt Hancock getting too excited...

BrightYellowDaffodil · 23/05/2022 21:37

It would if you'd followed the Covid Safe Sex guidance…Face away from each other, minimise contact and breathing. Masks.

Don't forget to limit the number of participants to six or fewer Grin

Gudbrand · 23/05/2022 21:37

@Scianel Correct!

Lindy2 · 23/05/2022 21:40

Well I'm still choosing to wear my mask in the supermarket as a Covid precaution.

I'll also make sure I don't do any naked rubbing up against other shoppers while I'm there, as my Monkey Pox prevention strategy.

Hopefully that will sort it.

springbreak22 · 23/05/2022 21:40

Preppers assemble

QueenOfThorns · 23/05/2022 21:45

mumda · 23/05/2022 20:18

Don't lick people either. Worked for COVID.

Ah, that’s it, I knew I was going wrong somewhere. The mask is to stop you from licking people.

Scianel · 23/05/2022 21:47

@Gudbrand I was really shocked and shaken last year when I read about the plan to mandate. I feel so sorry for anyone there that isn't comfortable with it, what a terrible situation to be in.

skodadoda · 23/05/2022 21:49

Ooh dear, there’s an outbreak of chickenpox, let’s make a big news story!

flipper97 · 23/05/2022 21:54

Evening, nudge unit 😁

Noname1999 · 23/05/2022 21:54

Don't hang out with our eat infected rodents. 😉

Twattergy · 23/05/2022 21:56

If it wasn't called Monkey pox the media wouldn't even be covering it and we'd be none the wiser (as it should be). There is no need for the nation to be aware of every tiny minor outbreak of various non life threatening illnesses.

Quartz2208 · 23/05/2022 21:56

These are definitely not light measures

mask mandates, social distancing, the rule of 6 and bans on indoor socialising and large events

That said should the Government continue as they are to roll out a considered vaccine programme (all over 50s are already vaccinated) then yes.
