Protections needed to stop monkeypox?

With news today that 57 cases of money pox have been discovered in the U.K., should we be putting some protections/mitigations in place to slow the spread and make sure the NHS can cope?

I don’t think lockdown would be appropriate at this stage but should the government be implementing things like mask mandates, social distancing, the rule of 6 and bans on indoor socialising and large events?

Surely we’ve learned from covid that it’s important to act early to prevent the need for more restrictions later?

What use would a mask be when it’s spread by skin to skin contact? Just don’t rub yourself on people and you’ll be fine.

Exactly this 😅

ChrisReasBathEggs · 23/05/2022 20:45

Nice distraction from partygate and the economy tanking though isn't it?

Onwards22 · 23/05/2022 20:47

NRTFT

If you’ve been in contact with someone with monkey pox you need to isolate for 3 weeks.

Monkey pox in itself isn’t that bad but it can be for pregnant people, elderly and the vulnerable.

Monkey pox is nothing like covid - covid was so scary because it was a new virus that spreads through the air and we had no vaccination for.
Monkey pox has been around for years, is spread by contact and has vaccinations and treatment already.

This is a joke surely? You do realise it’s basically a STD don’t you?

Not according to the Dr on a phone in today. It is shared by skin to skin contact but is not an STD.

Sparklingbrook · 23/05/2022 20:48

Oh are we doing this again? Monkeypox topic please. Now!

AlternativePerspective · 23/05/2022 20:48

So that’s what the government are going to do about the cost of living? Give us all moneypox?

So instead of blisters you develop pound coins which then drop off?

Mmm bring it on.

sunscreenandsaltwater · 23/05/2022 20:48

OP

Just don't have sex with someone with monkeypox.

Or a monkey, just to be sure.

HTH

GirlCrushxxx · 23/05/2022 20:49

I'd never heard of it before this week!

I think we should just ask for a scaremongering topic.

That way people can post there about paranoia of the hour, monkeypox/covid/nuclear war, have I missed anything?

toomuchlaundry · 23/05/2022 20:50

@sunscreenandsaltwater it's not an STD, otherwise I would be really concerned why young children get it

We know that monkey pox spreads through close contact so surely social distancing would help prevent people being close together?

No one is calling for full lockdown but surely putting in a few light touch mitigations and asking people to limit indoor mixing and close contact would help?

Your bare skin has to touch an infected person's bare skin. You don't need social distancing to avoid rubbing up against someone else.

What the hell good would that do OP? Aside from night clubs and brothels I can't think of a place where people are rubbing against each other in close enough contact to transmit monkey pox. Its not even likely to be transmitted in close quarters like the London Underground. It's a very close contact disease. Not airborne. Masks wouldn't do shit for this either.

Go book yourself a privately paid jab if it makes you feel any better. But don't inflict your ridiculous rules and beliefs on everyone else. If it makes you feel better than you take your own precautions, but don't ask everyone else to make silly sacrifices.

Thebeastofsleep · 23/05/2022 20:52

Oh yes please! I bloody loved lockdown.

Of course it would be a completely disproportionate response, but hey ho.

erikbloodaxe · 23/05/2022 20:53

I wouldn't mind a dose of money pox though. I'd be able to afford heating next winter.

I'm covering myself in polythene and making a shelter out of all my interior doors where I've stockpiled tinned goods and a wind up radio.
My delivery of loo roll from various supermarkets is en route.
Is there anything else I should be doing?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/05/2022 20:54

If you’ve been in contact with someone with monkey pox you need to isolate for 3 weeks.

If I go into the office tomorrow and someone later comes down with monkey pox I appreciate I have to isolate for 3 weeks. Would DH have to isolate with me (we wouldn't be isolating from each other in the home) or could he carry on as normal until I either got it or didn't?

SO224350 · 23/05/2022 20:54

I hope I don't get it, I can't stand bananas!

Porcupineintherough · 23/05/2022 20:55

Good God, when the virus evolves that targets "stupid" I for one won't be calling for a lockdown or a vaccine.

FromEden · 23/05/2022 20:55

Just don't go to sex parties and you'll be fine. No widespread measures needed

GirlCrushxxx · 23/05/2022 20:56

Who is paying for these 3 week isolations?

It’s not a sexual disease though is it? It can be spread by droplets through coughing and sneezing the same as covid.

cdc says
‘The virus enters the body through broken skin (even if not visible), respiratory tract, or the mucous membranes (eyes, nose, or mouth). Human-to-human transmission is thought to occur primarily through large respiratory droplets. Respiratory droplets generally cannot travel more than a few feet, so prolonged face-to-face contact is required.’

You know that covid is spread by aerosols, though, right? Not just by people sneezing or coughing actual, visible droplets at you, which would be how monkey pox spreads via the respiratory route? So someone just breathing out normally near you can give you covid, but they wouldn’t give you monkeypox the same way. So it’s way, way harder to pass on than covid.

The good thing is that known contacts are being told to isolate and if necessary will be given smallpox vaccine, which still works after contact. So this is relatively easy to actually contain.

As someone else said, stay away from people who are coughing, and don’t rub up against the bare skin of people you don’t know, and you’ll be grand.

don't be ridiculous, its an infectious disease like chicken pox. close contact. bit like sex lol!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/05/2022 20:56

I've just re read my post and wanted to add that I clearly won't be rubbing my bare skin against anyone in the office, it's not that kind of place! I was thinking more of the fact the CDC are saying it can be airborne!
