Protections needed to stop monkeypox?

With news today that 57 cases of money pox have been discovered in the U.K., should we be putting some protections/mitigations in place to slow the spread and make sure the NHS can cope?

I don’t think lockdown would be appropriate at this stage but should the government be implementing things like mask mandates, social distancing, the rule of 6 and bans on indoor socialising and large events?

Surely we’ve learned from covid that it’s important to act early to prevent the need for more restrictions later?

If it becomes an entirely new and unknown virus that is highly contagious and starts killing people and we at the time that it is identified and it starts killing people have absolutely no idea how many people it might kill globally then yeah, let's mask up and stay 6ft apart.

As it is though, government guidelines only need to be 'don't strip naked and rub up against strangers for several minutes at a time'.

Although I'm reasonably sure there's already laws against that tbh.

123ROLO · 23/05/2022 20:23

I'm pretty sure this is a goady thread but I'll contribute anyway.

The numbers are no where near high enough that lockdown would be considered, it seems the numbers are controllable and through contact tracing will peter down down shortly, most likely it will be out the news in a few weeks.

Although. All the comments that it's mild are a bit off, there's only 63 people who have it but aren't 2 or 3 of them hospitalised, including a child?

So if it did spread, it wouldn't be nothing, or mild. But luckily, it probably isn't going to spread.

toomuchlaundry · 23/05/2022 20:23

For the person who said it is a STD, it is not. Seems to be more harmful for the under 12s.

Lex345 · 23/05/2022 20:25

I assumed the first few cases were taken to hospital to ensure infection control procedures and isolation, with monitoring, rather than medical need.

usernotfound0000 · 23/05/2022 20:25

A few weeks ago half my daughters class was off school with chicken pox. It is rife in my town. No one has suggested we lockdown for that.

HesterShaw1 · 23/05/2022 20:26

Are you having a fucking laugh?

HesterShaw1 · 23/05/2022 20:26

(actually don't answer that - you probably are)

SurpriseSurprise · 23/05/2022 20:27

It’s suspected to have been spread about in saunas too, so avoid those and you’ll be fine

AbsoluteShambles · 23/05/2022 20:29

It’s not an STD (as a PP said) but sex is obviously a close contact, skin-to-skin event - so follow the solid advice from @QueenOfThorns and @mumda and you should be ok, OP. 😂 Though not much fun if you’re single!

Stroopwaffels · 23/05/2022 20:30

This is a joke, right?

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 23/05/2022 20:30

No way but people need to take more protection with their sexual health as std's gone sky high since lockdowns over and not sure what people can do to protect against this. The government need to let the public know where the areas are which it is so people can be more careful but not sure what else can be done.

Jofergo · 23/05/2022 20:31

Not using grindr and avoiding sleeping with anyone who is still doing so at the moment.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 23/05/2022 20:32

we all know not an std but close contact does include sex so that is why sex and sauna's etc and all that close contact make it unsafe.

outshinethemorningsun · 23/05/2022 20:32

Isn’t it skin-to-skin contact spread so masks wouldn’t help surely?

spreads differently to covid!

XenoBitch · 23/05/2022 20:32

It is spread via close contact... and I have not had close contact with anyone for years.
Anyone telling me to lockdown can get fucked.

PollyEsther · 23/05/2022 20:33

Absolutely fucking not. NEVER AGAIN.

Homophobic

AGH the media need to get on top of this.

It is spread by close contact (which yes does tend to happen during sex). It is not a disease exclusive to gay or bi men.

This is really important because there's already been cries of abuse etc, when a child was admitted to hospital with monkeypox.

hepatocyte · 23/05/2022 20:35

And yep as oodles of people have already said, the measures we needed for COVID (because it is airbourne) are entirely uncessary for something like monkeypox.

What use would a mask be when it’s spread by skin to skin contact? Just don’t rub yourself on people and you’ll be fine.

I think "just don't rub yourself on people" is pretty good overall life advice

Like · 23/05/2022 20:42

We know that monkey pox spreads through close contact so surely social distancing would help prevent people being close together?

No one is calling for full lockdown but surely putting in a few light touch mitigations and asking people to limit indoor mixing and close contact would help?

OP: "I don't think lockdowns would be appropriate"

Posters: "No lockdowns! Fuck off! Lockdown lovers!!"

The reading comprehension is appalling.

OP actually said 'I don’t think lockdown would be appropriate at this stage' not that they aren't appropriate at all.

Jenasaurus · 23/05/2022 20:43

Just wear a condom if you find yourself having sex with random men and you should be OK.

GirlCrushxxx · 23/05/2022 20:43

So if it affects kids more then it gets managed locally... schools, nurseries etc have their own measures

No need for the entire nation to lockdown ffs!
