Naked children at tourist spot - diagram included

Basically children playing/ swimming naked at a tourist waterfall. Strange or not?

Longer. So to me this didn't seem right. Yesterday I went to visit a very pretty waterfall - my first attempt at a MN diagram attached 😂 There is a car park then a walk of less than 1km up to the waterfall with a stream running down from the waterfall.

Got to a very pretty bridge and could see up to the waterfall. But couldn't take any pics or actually really look cause there were about 4 DC buck naked having a swim! It was raining and not that warm. But also just thought it was a really weird/ inappropriate place for DC to be swimming at all, 1 dad was with them, 2 mums were sitting (blocking a lot of the path) making flower chains/ pictures.

Went further up and there was another dad and a dc maybe 6ish on the surrounds of the plunge pool. Which was rock covered in green moss/ ferns. Walking back to the car there was 1 dc the far side of the bridge with no adult supervision dc looked maybe 4. Again lots of moss. Reasonably fast moving stream😑

IDK, I know kids like being naked and swimming but this wasn't the place was it?! The car park holds maybe 50ish cars and all spots were taken + 1 small bus load of Americans (one lady insisted on taking a pic of me and DH when we were taking a selfie which was nice!). It didn't seem busy but there had to be 100ish ppl milling around. Judging by the amount of signs in German/ French it must be a popular tourist spot.

Anyway:

YABU - Children can swim naked at tourist spots why wouldn't they
YANBU - It is weird

Was it Glencar? If so I'd say it's a dangerous spot for swimming, nude or otherwise. Also set up as car park/ coffee shop/ tourist walking paths. You would expect large numbers of tourists with cameras, so yes, a peculiar spot to strip off for a dip.

Silverswirl · 23/05/2022 18:39

roolz · 23/05/2022 18:36

Completely agree with this. Entirely possible to run around quite happily in pants or swimsuit absolutely no need for kids to strip off. And quite frankly I don’t want to see someone else’s genitals in a public place, child or adult!

Right- I don't get the need.

There is no need. But there is also no need to get pants wet if you have no swimming costume. Naked or pants is totally fine for younger kids!

PAFMO · 23/05/2022 17:37

I'm now confused as to why it's ok for children to be naked in a lake or on a beach but not at a waterfall.

Because it spoils photo opportunity.

SueSaid · 23/05/2022 18:40

'This. What a repressed nation we are.'

There is absolutely nothing 'repressed' about protecting the privacy of small dc. Do you run about naked in public, if not why not?

Xenia · 23/05/2022 18:40

No it's fine and up to each family to decide. We would swim naked sometimes as children although usually in rivers where no one was around and on the beach tended to put on a bathing suit. My grandparents apparently swam naked on the beach in the 1920s even! Other families want to be totally covered in burkhas etc - each to their own and if you dislike the human body then just move away.

liveforsummer · 23/05/2022 18:41

Surely if they were swimming then you would rsee anything in the pictures except their heads anyway. Sorry I don't think I'd even register this let alone be horrified or start a thread!

Margotshypotheticaldog · 23/05/2022 18:41

A bit like stripping off for a cooling dip in the Trevi fountain.

ancientgran · 23/05/2022 18:49

Irishfarmer · 23/05/2022 17:45

Because, imo anyway, ppl went to the waterfall areas specifically to see the waterfall and as most people do these days, take pictures. It wasn't huge and if you wanted a pic of the bridge with the waterfall (which going by google reviews many ppl do) there was no way to do this without taking pictures of random naked kids.

This was in ROI, about 10km from UK. I do know they are a fair bit more relaxed on the continent.

But it is a public place and your desire to take a photo doesn't outweigh their desire to swim naked.

crosstalk · 23/05/2022 18:50

Agree with @Sleepingsatellite1. Cameras were around when I was swimming naked. I don't think my parents were concerned at all about the odd photo. My daughter swam in the nude or swim pants until she didn't want to. I agree social media and the dark web has made it more concerning but covering your children just in case? that way madness lies. At what age does it stop? do you cover your teenage children up?

IMHO putting baby girls into bikinis is more sexualising.

PCAMA · 23/05/2022 18:51

Taken from the same link:
"Indecent imagery does not always mean nudity; however, images are likely to be defined as such if they meet one or more of the following criteria:

nude or semi-nude sexual posing (e.g. displaying genitals and/or breasts or overtly sexual images of young people in their underwear)

someone nude or semi-nude touching themselves in a sexual way

any sexual activity involving a child

someone hurting someone else sexually

sexual activity that includes animals".

A picture of a naked child is not inherently indecent and you absolutely can take pictures of your child naked and send them to the father. It becomes an indecent image when it is sexually posed. Had the OP taken a picture of the waterfall with naked children in the background it would not be an indecent image. Had she taken a picture of a naked child posing "sexually" (I won't go into detail but think about pose and where the camera is angled) that then becomes indecent.

Maybebabyno2 · 23/05/2022 18:52

This is not correct by the way, even the link you have provided states this does not include over 18s having/sharing photos of under 18s. The gov website also says child abuse images must be deemed to be indecent. There are no set guidelines for this. A parent sharing a photo of their child in the bath, or someone accidentally getting a shot of a naked child in the background of a photo would not constitue an indecent image.

Have you checked every single photo you have ever taken to make sure there's not a baby being changed somewhere in the background or a kids bum on display? I haven't! These things would easily be missed imo, it would be rediculous to class them as images of child abuse.

@Frogslegsbigfeet thank you finally some one gets it. Everything in the universe revolves around me and my needs/ wants.

@FlissyPaps I'm not giving out that other ppl (adults or kids) get in my pics from time to time of course they do. It was just that there was no way to really take pics/ watch the waterfall which is why everyone would stop there, without staring at them.

@ErinAoife I didn't say because I'm not sure but I don't think you are allowed to swim in the waterfall.

Just curious where is it in Ireland, I thought I see all of them and I can't recall anywhere where you could swim, way too small.

Thebeastofsleep · 23/05/2022 18:53

Wouldn't bother me, and I'd let my kids do it. We have a similar attraction near where I grew up and plenty of people swim there in the spring and summer.

They're as much allowed to enjoy the attraction as you are. Why does your desire to take photos trump their desire to swim/ play in the water?

Christinatherabbit · 23/05/2022 18:59

I would find it inappropriate and wouldn't let mine do the same but I wish I could as I think it's lovely for children to feel so free. I don't really understand what the diagram is for?

motogirl · 23/05/2022 19:00

No big deal in my books. I like swimming naked too!

IamaBluebird · 23/05/2022 19:07

A waterfall with fast flowing water and slippery underfoot doesn’t sound the best of places for children to be playing.

SlightlyGeordieJohn · 23/05/2022 19:09

Eightiesfan · 23/05/2022 17:28

A few years back our town square was refurbished with a large fountain. In the summer the number of buck naked children playing in the fountain while their parents sat outside one of the cafes was ridiculous. Why would you allow your children to run about naked in a busy town centre where any number of perverts could take photos?

So what if they do?

Irishfarmer · 23/05/2022 19:10

@ErinAoife @Margotshypotheticaldoggot it, it was Glencar. Someone else took what I said out of context, that's what I mean by I am not 100% but I don't think you are allowed to swim there. It was a weird place for swimming, naked or otherwise. In fairness margot that was good guessing!!
It was a strange/ dangerous place to swim imo. Ppl went there to enjoy the scenery and yes take pictures!

Well that’s a pointless comment then.

I don't think it was tbh. I'm sure there are plenty of people who know exactly why I was unable to put into words my disgust.

I’m going to guess either a strict religious upbringing, or you have some sort of issue?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 23/05/2022 19:12

i guess they went unprepared and so stripped
annoying for your pictures

BobLep0nge · 23/05/2022 19:14

So what if they do?

You happy for naked pictures of your children to be posted on pedo websites?

GirlCrushxxx · 23/05/2022 19:15

Why so much focus on moss?

Branleuse · 23/05/2022 19:15

ErinAoife · 23/05/2022 18:01

Lately I have read more about women sexualy abused children in newspaper so I will not generalise that it is more men that are pervert.

Men commit around 98% of sexual offences.
That doesnt mean women never do it, but 98% is definitely more than 2%

GirlCrushxxx · 23/05/2022 19:17

Maybe the kids have been brought up in the countryside and are used to rivers, waterfalls, rain ( it's may, temperatures are fine) and....moss!!!!

Not all kids are brought up as mollycoddled snowflakes.

I have no opinion on the nakedness. We all did it back in the 70's/80's

SlightlyGeordieJohn · 23/05/2022 19:17

Right- I don't get the need.

I don’t get the need to put pants on them. The fact that weirdos like you are getting worked up over a little boy’s penis is worrying, but part of life.
