Naked children at tourist spot - diagram included

Basically children playing/ swimming naked at a tourist waterfall. Strange or not?

Longer. So to me this didn't seem right. Yesterday I went to visit a very pretty waterfall - my first attempt at a MN diagram attached 😂 There is a car park then a walk of less than 1km up to the waterfall with a stream running down from the waterfall.

Got to a very pretty bridge and could see up to the waterfall. But couldn't take any pics or actually really look cause there were about 4 DC buck naked having a swim! It was raining and not that warm. But also just thought it was a really weird/ inappropriate place for DC to be swimming at all, 1 dad was with them, 2 mums were sitting (blocking a lot of the path) making flower chains/ pictures.

Went further up and there was another dad and a dc maybe 6ish on the surrounds of the plunge pool. Which was rock covered in green moss/ ferns. Walking back to the car there was 1 dc the far side of the bridge with no adult supervision dc looked maybe 4. Again lots of moss. Reasonably fast moving stream😑

IDK, I know kids like being naked and swimming but this wasn't the place was it?! The car park holds maybe 50ish cars and all spots were taken + 1 small bus load of Americans (one lady insisted on taking a pic of me and DH when we were taking a selfie which was nice!). It didn't seem busy but there had to be 100ish ppl milling around. Judging by the amount of signs in German/ French it must be a popular tourist spot.

Anyway:

YABU - Children can swim naked at tourist spots why wouldn't they
YANBU - It is weird

I don't have a problem at all with kids that age being naked in a "public" place, say playing in the river 1km upstream, on a longer walk. But definitely not a location like that which is clearly a tourist spot (or there wouldn't be a car park by it) that people will be taking pictures of - or not, if they know about the laws.

Irishfarmer · 23/05/2022 17:18

I think the kids aged from about 2 to 7. It bothered me because I wanted to take pictures. But didn't want to take pictures (or have pics) of random naked children. I wanted to take pictures of the pretty bridge/ waterfall.

TBF, you couldn’t really take photos with other people’s children in, even if they were clothed, if you’re following current norms.

It is a bit odd that people would let their DC strip in public, though, considering those same current norms.

AlyssasBackRolls · 23/05/2022 17:42

Outside of e.g. european beaches where it's common I don't think it's appropriate in a very busy touristy area with a solo point of focus like a big waterfall and everyone trying to enjoy it/take pictures. You don't say if it was UK or not? Mine have enjoyed swimming and splashing in plenty of UK waterfalls, as have others's children we've seen but never naked - absolutely they'd have some trunks on or a T shirt over pants or something. In the Lakes I tend to take swim shoes too as the rocks can be very slippery indeed so yes I'd be concerned that they would need to be supervised much more than in a babbling brook or shallow coastline. Maybe I'm an uptight killjoy!

Flavourflava · 23/05/2022 17:42

But, and I know this won’t go down well, if some nonce is getting his rocks off, your kids won’t know, you won’t know.

No, I know what you're saying. I wouldn't stop my child doing something normal like going to the park or playing in a waterfall because of the risk of...someone storing mental images of them.

Wbeezer · 23/05/2022 17:42

Last time i rounded a corner to discover naked children (and parent) in a river they were Germans! (this was in the Highlands).
I didn't mind but my preteen kids cringed rather even though they had been naked on beaches many times up till about the age of 4.

Mangogogogo · 23/05/2022 17:43

WalkerWalking · 23/05/2022 17:32

And FYI if you had accidentally captured any naked children in your picture, you would have been in possession of child pornography, which is illegal.

Ps for anyone who doesn't know- sending, for example, a picture of your own child naked in the bath, to their own father, counts as distribution of child pornography, and is similarly illegal.

No, sorry, you are incorrect.

the images must be sexual in nature.

skgnome · 23/05/2022 17:44

I applaud your diagram
personally I would have kept my DD in underwear
Other toddlers, even preschoolers, fair play… older than that, again I wouldn’t, but they are with their parents… so not my monkeys….

PAFMO · 23/05/2022 17:37

I'm now confused as to why it's ok for children to be naked in a lake or on a beach but not at a waterfall.

Because, imo anyway, ppl went to the waterfall areas specifically to see the waterfall and as most people do these days, take pictures. It wasn't huge and if you wanted a pic of the bridge with the waterfall (which going by google reviews many ppl do) there was no way to do this without taking pictures of random naked kids.

This was in ROI, about 10km from UK. I do know they are a fair bit more relaxed on the continent.

Flavourflava · 23/05/2022 17:45

didn’t know where to look

This is surely an OP problem. Just look at the waterfall, look at the children having fun in the waterfall. I think it's genuinely bizarre to feel flustered by the site of a naked child.

fluffycereal · 23/05/2022 17:46

@WalkerWalking

There is no such offence as possession or distribution of 'child pornography' - the term is indecent images...

Member869894 · 23/05/2022 17:47

This wouldn't bother me. Mine used to run around naked on the beach until they were about 4 or 5

PriamFarrl · 23/05/2022 17:49

Hospedia · 23/05/2022 17:38

Newsflash: a paedophile will "get their rocks off" (to use a phrase above) regardless of what a child is or isn't wearing and you will never know what is going through the heads of the people around you - you'll encounter people every day who "perve" on your child without you ever knowing.

Randoms at a waterfall seeing supervised-but-naked children are not that much of a concern, statistically s child is far more likely to be abused by someone they know as trust provides access and access provides opportunity.

Exactly. If someone gets off on that they they will be watching children in shops, walking to school, in church, at playgrounds. Perverts are perverts and will be watching children anywhere they happen to be.

Silverswirl · 23/05/2022 17:50

Oh bloody hell. So!?? Children under 8 naked swimming in public. Shock horror hold the front page. Jeez. Older kids is a no but younger esp under 5 or 6 so what? Would you have felt happier capturing photos with kids in their swimming costumes then?
There are some horrible pervs out there but they are not hiding in every corner like the msm / SM would have us believe. Most people really arnt bothered, it’s just nice seeing kids feeling free and having fun.
Saying that, kids should never ever be left unsupervised in water, esp wild swimming so I would be far more worried about their safety than what they weren’t wearing

KupoNutCoffee · 23/05/2022 17:53

Nothing particularly wrong with children being naked. But it doesn't seem to be the most appropriate place.

Maybe rude is the wrong word, but it does seem thoughtless of them to allow their children to run naked in what does sound like a lovely spot, and therefore likely a backdrop to many a photo. As they'd likely be the first to protest if they noticed anyone looking like they were pointing a phone/camera in their direction.

Having clothed children that happen to be in the frame of a stranger's photo is quite different to a naked one.

Where they're playing in the focal point, it's not like a beach in that people can't just shuffle along until naked children are out of shot

Even if no-one was taking photos, people might want to just watch the waterfall, and no-one wants to look like they're watching naked children.

Yabu if small child, yanbu if teen/adult

Frogslegsbigfeet · 23/05/2022 17:55

I’m sorry you didn’t get to take pictures and the kids naked swimming ruined it for you. I fully agree your need to take a picture should have come first and they were out of line. Of course you couldn’t also take a pic of them even In swimwear, as that’s nearly naked, so really they shouldn’t have been there at all.

they ruined your day, could you phone the local council and complain strongly? You could also email your mp and explain you’d rather children were not there enjoying the water in the warm weather, that it’s pretty and you wanted to take some pics and they ruined it for you.

Nope, I am happy for kids to enjoy their bodies. I think the problem lies with sick and twisted men, as usual, and it is this that ought to change, not kids behaviour.

I hate how as a society we arrange everything around not tempting men, around avoiding their crimes. It's a fucking mess.

I also dislike how we are inadvertently teaching kids to hide their bodies or associate them with attack or shame. As a culture we are not moving forward.

Why only twisted men?

FiveNineFive · 23/05/2022 17:59

ErinAoife · 23/05/2022 17:56

Why only twisted men?

Because its almost always men

FiveNineFive · 23/05/2022 18:00

I wouldn't care about the nudity. But waterfalls are often not very safe places to swim

ErinAoife · 23/05/2022 18:01

Lately I have read more about women sexualy abused children in newspaper so I will not generalise that it is more men that are pervert.

FlissyPaps · 23/05/2022 18:02

YABU.

Unfortunately, you cannot control what gets in the way of things you want to photograph. Wether that be, naked children, children in swimming attire, fully clothed children, adults, animals, trees, vehicles anything!!

You could have taken your photo, and simply cropped out the children if they were in the shot. Then immediately delete the original. (I have been to many waterfalls whilst traveling and have taken many photos. I have always managed to crop out people from the shots who are swimming below).

ErinAoife · 23/05/2022 18:03

Where is the location of the Waterfall in Ireland? I can't recall any waterfall where you could have a swim when I visited Ireland.
