To not have any enthusiasm for the Jubilee weekend and want to escape it

AIBU? It just feels like it doesn't fit with everything going on right now, especially the cost of living crisis. I don't want to wave a flag for someone on a golden throne (and I do like the Queen normally) and I don't want a street party. With the cost of living crisis going on and families facing real misery it just feels very outdated and odd to me and I dislike seeing Union Jacks everywhere too.

Awesome grasp of nuance there, Paddington.

Let's just party! Who cares if the people we're celebrating are complete arseholes!

As a pp said there are many reasons to be joyful. Racist twats living for 100 years in huge mansions isn't one of those reasons.

RoonilWazlibb · 24/05/2022 19:33

Move to the Highlands, op. No Union Jacks just Ukrainian flags as far as the eye can see.

Time to abolish this gross inequality.
The RF have too much wealth and 20% of people in UK are now living in poverty.

What is there to celebrate? If you have everything you need and are held in high esteem you can have a very long life.
Why would I want to celebrate this?

When I say stuff like this my comment is deleted as people on here complain!! In this country the majority seem to enjoy being 'ruled ' by an unelected pampered head of state. Those of us who object are in the minority. Time to stop caring it does no good at all and will not change for a very long time if ever. Hopefully the 'royals' will get their comeupance in the afterlife when they will have to answer to a much higher being or beings as to why they lived a life of luxury at the expense of poor people ( I expect this comment to be deleted as my others have been due to upsetting the monarchists).

I don't know, it seems to be all over our village!! Parties, school parties, street parties etc etc

And as for Friday off work, I don't work a Friday and now my kids will be home too 😬 😂

A lot of people possibly can't afford to party, or don't feel like celebrating.
I can understand, I actually don't mind it if I don't have to be involved, to each their own and so on, but it also feels a bit crass when we're celebrating the elite who won't be affected as a lot of the nation is driven into poverty.

ANameChangeling · 24/05/2022 20:52

@Tania64, I agree 100%

WanderingFruitWonderer · 25/05/2022 02:55

I totally understand OP. I've got very mixed feelings about it...
On the one hand - a welcome break for many, and an excuse for get togethers after Covid kept people apart.
On the other hand, yes, it feels a little inappropriate with the state of the world. Much more so than the Diamond Jubilee ten years ago, when the UK, and the world generally, felt like a very different place - oh how I miss 2012 😔
Yes, more poverty, but also the Ukraine situation, and the climate crisis, which I think many people still haven't grasped the enormity of.
Re The Royal Family, I'm most definitely not a monarchist. Nor am I a staunch Republican. I'm kind of indifferent! I admire the Queen's work ethic etc. But as a vegan, I loathe their love of bloodsports. I also think they're far too rich. Some people (including my mum!) love the theatre of the pageantry, and I don't want to spoil their fun. But I myself won't partake, as I'm self-employed, and been booked for work all four days. Post-pandemic, I can't afford to turn work down.
Anyway, I voted YANBU, as I think your thoughts are totally understandable. I hope you can find a lovely alternative to the Jubilee celebrations, and I hope you have a lovely time😊

Very easy to avoid. Nothing in the Midlands...

Quite a lot going in in parts.

balalake · 25/05/2022 07:30

I am sure OP there are plenty of things you could do other than join in any local Jubilee celebrations. Your choice, enjoy the option to opt out.

Gufo · 25/05/2022 07:32

Cannot abide the monarchy so treating it as extra time off work, cheap activities for the kids and cake!

WheresTheLambSauce · 25/05/2022 20:47

If you want to avoid the celebrations then you can always join me at work, just the usual 7:30 - 6 for us! 😂 😂

(I hope you settled on something fun to do for the long weekend, op 💕)

darisdet · 25/05/2022 21:35

You can't even escape it in your inbox. Jubilee themed emails from people you'd never think.

I'm thinking of companies selling. Even National Rail was offering Jubilee wine or some nonsense.
