To not have any enthusiasm for the Jubilee weekend and want to escape it

AIBU? It just feels like it doesn't fit with everything going on right now, especially the cost of living crisis. I don't want to wave a flag for someone on a golden throne (and I do like the Queen normally) and I don't want a street party. With the cost of living crisis going on and families facing real misery it just feels very outdated and odd to me and I dislike seeing Union Jacks everywhere too.

So don’t wave a flag or go to a street party. At least it’s a couple of days off work.

Anonnnnnnm · 23/05/2022 16:47

Just ignore it and have a normal weekend?

PurpleandPlatinum · 23/05/2022 16:51

The royal family save us lots of money though - without them we would all have to pay more taxes. They bring in huge amounts of money in tourism and business to the UK which by far exceeds that we give them.

tigger1001 · 23/05/2022 16:58

We don't get bank holidays off work, so will be working as normal.

It's not a big thing where I am and am unaware of any street parties as such. Just something on in the local park.

52andblue · 23/05/2022 16:58

Here in Scotland it's all rather quiet ...

Stellaris22 · 23/05/2022 16:59

I too find it distasteful to celebrate someone who happens to have been born into immense wealth while people are struggling to afford to eat and pay their bills.

Of course you don’t have to join in but accepting that some people are going to find this celebration hard is important.

Giraffesandbottoms · 23/05/2022 17:10

Our street has absolutely lost the plot. Everyone has spent a lot of money on decorations and they are still bizarrely demanding money for unclear reasons (everyone is bringing food and drink).

it’s become a bit mental/spreadsheets are involved and several meetings. I really wish I had RSVP’D no!

Giraffesandbottoms · 23/05/2022 17:11

Actually Rick Astley lives the street over and DH is gutted we aren’t going to that street party instead in case he performs (unlikely I think) 😃

KermitlovesKeyLimePie · 23/05/2022 17:15

Lockdown and it's restrictions have soon been forgotten judging by some of these responses.

Any excuse for a party and to be able to socialise with friends and loved ones is not a bad thing in my book.

ANameChangeling · 23/05/2022 17:16

I have no enthusiasm for it, as I don’t view the royal family as a positive thing. Luckily I will be away on holiday that week, so get to ignore most of it.

I do wish that people could at least fly the Union Jack the right way up though… We learnt the correct way at school and that upside down is actually a distress signal but I’ve seen it like that loads of places, including in a Tesco advert and plastic flags for sale in the Entertainer!

saveforthat · 23/05/2022 17:20

I was around in the 70s and 80s and don't associate the union jack with the national front.

gabsdot45 · 23/05/2022 17:22

Here in Ireland we had an extra bank holiday after Saint Patrick's Day this year so we had a Thursday and Friday off.
It was brilliant. Enjoy your 4 day weekend.

What's wrong with seeing Union Jack's everywhere? 🤷🏼‍♀️

It's enforced "patriotic" spirit, nationalism and in your face royalist shite

CuriousCatfish · 23/05/2022 17:29

I'm going to avoid it all all costs. I'm usually up for a party but not one that celebrates a Royal family that should have been abolished years ago.

It's all a bit 'let them eat cake'

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 23/05/2022 17:30

I hate it too OP. Hate the royal family. WE will be facing a lot of hardship and they get to live lavish lifestyles. Disgusting

Spot on

YANBU.

I’m working on both bank holidays, thankfully, and I will be staying as far away from any Jubilee BS as possible.

I always think it's a good thing to show the Far Right that the Union Jack doesn't belong to them. It belongs to all of us - and by that I mean anyone who makes the U.K. their home.

mmmmmmghturep · 23/05/2022 17:32

Friend of mine on minimum wage has to go into work on the Thurs and Fri and will have to use taxis as the buses arent running.

My local town have put up flags and I thought it looked lovely. Other countries display their flags and people don't get up in arms about it!

MirandaWest · 23/05/2022 17:33

I’m not especially excited about it but that may be because I’m working Thursday, Friday and Saturday over the jubilee weekend. But I’ll get time off some other time in exchange.

Darkstar4855 · 23/05/2022 17:34

I work in A&E, a four day boozing weekend is the stuff of nightmares for us.

SickAndTiredAgain · 23/05/2022 17:35

It's pretty easy to avoid it though. Apart from some flags and some stuff on tv, it's not that much is it?
I'm viewing it like the football World Cup - I don't personally care, but some people do, so I'll just ignore the tv coverage and flags for a bit. And at least DH gets some days off work (I'm on mat leave so off anyway).

Kite22 · 23/05/2022 17:39

YANBU to have no enthusiasm for it, if you don't, but YABU to say "it doesn't fit right now". Any reason to get together as community is positive in my book, and more so when people are struggling.

Not sure why a street party feels 'outdated' - they only tend to happen once every 25 years or so, it isn't 'of a time'. However, there is absolutely no compulsion to attend anything. Just treat it as a normal weekend, ar a double length weekend if you get Bank Holidays. If you don't want to have anything to do with it, then don't. Simples.

Username917778 · 23/05/2022 17:39

What is there to celebrate? I find the whole thing disgusting. Thankfully I'm in Scotland so it only really exists in the big tesco.
