To not have any enthusiasm for the Jubilee weekend and want to escape it

AIBU? It just feels like it doesn't fit with everything going on right now, especially the cost of living crisis. I don't want to wave a flag for someone on a golden throne (and I do like the Queen normally) and I don't want a street party. With the cost of living crisis going on and families facing real misery it just feels very outdated and odd to me and I dislike seeing Union Jacks everywhere too.

For those who want to have some 'fun'. Surely there are better ways of having fun than flag waving and marvelling at the fact that a very rich privileged woman has lived a long life while other people in the country can't afford to eat properly and don't have the money to heat their homes.

👏🏻👏🏻

Is the money for the jubilee coming directly out of the money for the poor?

Where I live all the proceeds from the jubilee stalls is going into the local church food bank fund. It doesn’t have to be one or the other.

janj2301 · 23/05/2022 20:02

only advantage to me is I work Thursday and Friday so will have a very long weekend, I get pissed that my colleagues who work Mondays get 7 days more leave than me and yes I have looked into getting the work policy changed

wonderstuff · 23/05/2022 20:02

We’re using the extra bank holiday for a long weekend in Europe. Not a fan of the monarchy.

Legrandsophie · 23/05/2022 20:06

And you could make the money argument about anything.

All that money waste on the Commonwealth Games could be spent on to help families.

All that money spent on the Olympic could be spent helping the NHS.

All that money spent on football could go to house the homeless.

ETC

When in fact the issue is that we as a country don’t pay enough tax and the tax we do pay is used to give contracts to the friends of ministers. Don’t confuse the royal family for the government.

MoobsAreNotBoobs · 23/05/2022 20:11

I’m not interested in it so won’t be participating. We have a few friends and their kids coming to stay with us for the weekend as they want to escape the street parties.

What's wrong with seeing Union Jack's everywhere?

They look like a National Front parade, which means something to people who were around in the 70s & early 80s.

I was around in the 70s and 80s, why would the sight of a union flag make me think of the National Front?

Participate or not, it’s a unique event. No monarch has ever reigned for 70 years before. It’s right and proper it should be marked.

FoiledByTheInsect · 23/05/2022 20:17

Don't confuse the royal family for the government

A good point, there is a difference. The queen decides how much money she would like to have, and the government crawls up her arse to give it to her.

Republican soiree as suggested by a pp. Pin the body part on the nonce and other exciting party games.

No of course it isn't coming out of money for the poor and of course, as you well know, that's not what I was saying.

The idea of people flag waving and celebrating the life of this fabulously rich woman while so many of her 'subjects' can't afford to feed themselves and money is need for food banks is something I find abhorrent.

Snoozer11 · 23/05/2022 20:30

I'd rather be ruled by someone who is born to rule over someone who thinks they were born to rule.

It's meant to be sizzling, hope it is where you are.

Magic thanks I hope so I want to be well enough and just have bit of fun, I’ll put money aside this week for it

DdraigGoch · 23/05/2022 20:35

There are some real fun-sponges on this thread. I can't stand football but I don't go around believing that no one else should be allowed to enjoy it either.

FoiledByTheInsect · 23/05/2022 20:41

Slight difference there Ddraig, footballers who nonce about and dodge taxes get the sack. Royals do these things and we make cakes and sing cringey songs in their honour? Weird.

What on earth is "fun" about celebrating these wasters?

darisdet · 23/05/2022 20:45

I don't answer disingenuous questions, to whoever it was that quoted me...

ScholesPanda · 23/05/2022 20:58

Oh come off it OP. If there wasn't a Jubilee on you wouldn't be able to shamelessly virtue signal about how much you care about people who are struggling, and how it makes you so much better than the selfish dolts who are just treating it as an excuse to enjoy themselves.
I'm quite sure you'll enjoy every minute of it.

user1487194234 · 23/05/2022 21:05

Am going to a few events
Really looking forward to seeing family and friends and having fun after the last 2 years
And of course celebrating 70 years since the Queen became Queen
But if you don’t fancy it I don’t think it’s compulsory

Ifailed · 23/05/2022 21:07

I'd rather be ruled by someone who is born to rule over someone who thinks they were born to rule.

I doubt there's a difference.

Manekinek0 · 23/05/2022 21:08

I couldn't care less so I am working it. The downside of that is early starts so I'm kind of hoping it rains seeing as our neighbours are idiots who seem to think the whole estate wants to listen to their shite 90s dance mix.

OversBo · 23/05/2022 21:26

How can anyone be bothered to celebrate the lives of these thick posh parasites. Luckily I’m on holiday so will miss it all.

CurlyCew · 23/05/2022 21:34

What would an anti Jubilee/Royalty party look like, come on use your imaginations! It would have to be away from civilisation up a mountain somewhere the cameras can't reach for starters I suppose. 😉

Hellsbe · 23/05/2022 21:35

Very happy with the extra bank holiday! We’re off on a European city break. If I was at home, I would be completely ignoring it. Embarrassing shite.

Punk party, with good booze, and the sex pistols at full volume, 😂

I'm a bit worried about your ability to cope with life if you can't differentiate between a group of thugs (usually skinheads) aggressively marching through towns trying to intimidate people, and some bunting outside our local Primary school and old people's home Hmm

I was around in the 70s yet I associate the Union Jack with days like Super Saturday at the 2012 Olympics.

The Queen doesn't "nonce about".

Why do you get to judge whether something is "fun" or not. I'm happy to have any excuse for a party (not that I need an excuse to eat cake).

babysgotthespends · 23/05/2022 22:11

We're also avoiding it OP despite kids' school having a Jubilee picnic on Friday. We were going to get DS 7 to wear a Sex Pistols t shirt to school as they can wear their own clothes but he's either going to wear his Scottish (representing DP) or Nigerian (representing me) football kit instead which will be a mini protest that he'll be oblivious too.

I also associate union jacks with the national front. I don't find them triggering and don't assume schools or old people's home have some racist hidden agenda when the bunting is hung but that's my feeling toward them, nobody needs to worry about me 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇳🇬

childofthecorn · 23/05/2022 22:12

Gosh, why are so many posters spitting hate and vitriol about having a bit of a knees up? Learn to live and let go a little and don't bloody police or nastily envy other people their ability to congregate and enjoy and eat trifle or whatever they want to do with an extra day off, which by the way all are entirely voluntary and ignorable. Fucking hell, lighten up!
