To not have any enthusiasm for the Jubilee weekend and want to escape it

AIBU? It just feels like it doesn't fit with everything going on right now, especially the cost of living crisis. I don't want to wave a flag for someone on a golden throne (and I do like the Queen normally) and I don't want a street party. With the cost of living crisis going on and families facing real misery it just feels very outdated and odd to me and I dislike seeing Union Jacks everywhere too.

*4 day weekend

RaininSummer · 23/05/2022 19:03

I don't care about it at all though Queenie is a good egg. Am going to work overtime instead.

Confused It's all around me - adverts, Union Jacks everywhere, streets being closed -feels like it's being rammed down my throat whether I like it or not tbh.

I agree, there's just no escape from the topic even if you are trying to avoid it.

I am fed up reading about it.

darisdet · 23/05/2022 19:05

As a republican I'm in complete agreement.

Fair enough, but for other people, it’s a pleasant diversion / celebration, something to take them out of the misery for a bit.

I know I’d rather spend time around people who can see the positive side of it, rather than insisting on steadfastly wallowing in the ‘misery’.

I’m not in the UK, so unaffected.

SomersetONeil · 23/05/2022 19:12

It's a shame we don't have relatively uncomplicated national celebrations like some countries do (4th July in US, 14th July in France, etc).

I genuinely don’t see how either of those celebrations are any less ‘complicated’ than a jubilee.

DontKeepTheFaith · 23/05/2022 19:13

I am completely ignoring it and just making the most of the bank holidays. I’ll be working one day as extra but have the other 3 days off.

I’m very antisocial so won’t be going to any street parties.

sashagabadon · 23/05/2022 19:16

I’m looking forward to it, will be up the mall or in the vicinity waving my flag. But it’s not compulsory and we live in a free country happily so if anyone wants to head off for the weekend somewhere else why not!

You couldn't possibly imagine that some British people might not want to celebrate the monarchy whereas most Americans would want to celebrate Independence Day?! OK then Hmm

RainCoffeeBook · 23/05/2022 19:18

It's very easy to ignore. And thankfully my kids aren't into any of it either, so we can ignore it all together.

Various holidays and celebrations happen every day but you manage to ignore those. You can stretch it to one more.

sashagabadon · 23/05/2022 19:18

London is looking great at the moment too

BDeyes · 23/05/2022 19:32

All seems very quiet on the jubilee front near me, No street parties that I have heard of going ahead, nobody seems to be talking about it. very little jubilee stuff in our shops. The only thing I have heard of is our primary school having a jubilee party day for the children later this week. I'm in a big city by the way.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 23/05/2022 19:34

Agree. I'm going abroad for it, thank fuck.

The royal family save us lots of money though - without them we would all have to pay more taxes. They bring in huge amounts of money in tourism and business to the UK which by far exceeds that we give them.

It's a pity that some of the money that we've given them can't be ploughed back to help feed some of the poorest in our country at this time rather than keeping the royal family in obscene luxury.

Anyone who can raise £12million pounds to pay off someone he claims he'd met could surely afford to put a bit towards feeding the poor.

For those who want to have some 'fun'. Surely there are better ways of having fun than flag waving and marvelling at the fact that a very rich privileged woman has lived a long life while other people in the country can't afford to eat properly and don't have the money to heat their homes.

lightand · 23/05/2022 19:36

I am older. Feel like I have lived through 7 already[prob have!]

Plantlifeandsoul · 23/05/2022 19:39

I used to love the yearly street party where I used to live but it wasn’t about royalty. It was the big get together or something. Lovely get out and meet neighbours and share food.

totally agree about the royal family though. I do like the Queen. She reminds me of my gran. But I don’t like the idea of public money funding aristocrats that are there simply because they were born into a family whose ancestors managed to grab all the resources through sheer greed and violence. Time for change now.

It's a party. I don't think you have to have union jack knickers and be a diehard royalist to enjoy a bloody knees up and a few, usually free events put on by neighbours and local councils!

jamapop · 23/05/2022 19:45

Hm, I do kind of think you are being U as I don’t see a huge deal about it being made around me. The bunting and flags around are quite jolly I suppose and hardly expensive.
My DC are doing things about it at school, which is nice, but only as much as they do about something every few weeks when the school manages to come up with a theme around which to do writing..
I think there are some local outside concerts which I might drop by but again, it’s free or low cost and I don’t see people spending crazy amounts on huge parties. Maybe I’m out of the loop?

RockAndOrRoll · 23/05/2022 19:48

4 days off sounds like bliss, to me.

I shall be up on the allotment, not a bit of bunting or trifle in sight!

darisdet · 23/05/2022 19:51

Couldn't have put this in any better terms. Well said.

BeautifulWar · 23/05/2022 19:54

Couldn't give a monkeys really, but appreciate the day off. I don't really enjoy or participate in flag waving events anyway, but they bring some people pleasure.

Legrandsophie · 23/05/2022 19:59

My God- the horror! People around you will be trying to have fun and you’ll be forced to ignore it.

What an absolutely first world problem. I personally hate cycling with a red hot passion but I still manage not to begrudge all the fun rides they route through our village every year.

Because I recognise that not everything has to be aimed at what I enjoy. Perhaps try to do the same OP.

GreenClock · 23/05/2022 20:00

I dislike the RF but selfishly I’m pleased about the bank hol.

OP - enjoy the time off and leave the flag-waving to the gammons.
