To not have any enthusiasm for the Jubilee weekend and want to escape it

AIBU? It just feels like it doesn't fit with everything going on right now, especially the cost of living crisis. I don't want to wave a flag for someone on a golden throne (and I do like the Queen normally) and I don't want a street party. With the cost of living crisis going on and families facing real misery it just feels very outdated and odd to me and I dislike seeing Union Jacks everywhere too.

What's wrong with seeing Union Jack's everywhere?

They look like a National Front parade, which means something to people who were around in the 70s & early 80s.

I very well remember the 70s and 80s and the National Front. I was part of the Anti Nazi League and various other things and tried to do my bit to counter their vile ideas. The Union flag, like the St Georges flag doesn't belong to the far Right, unless we let it. It is not a swastika and I refuse to be offended by the sight of our national flag.

OP, you can easily avoid the Jubilee. No one is going to be dragging people to street parties at gunpoint.

Exactly. I marched with the Anti Nazi League too.

Just enjoy the long weekend-I very much doubt we will have another jubilee for a very long time - even if its not your cup of tea it's something to experience - I'm pretty neutral about the Royal Family but have great childhood memories of the silver jubilee.

I said I wasn’t going to bother but have felt so crap lately I thought why not the Saturday afternoon tea cakes stalls I’ve brought a little crown to wear, I need something to look forward so I’m going I hope the weather cheers up it may for goodness sake not November with grey skies rain.

saveforthat · 23/05/2022 17:49

@mmmmmmghturep Where are you in the UK that buses don't run on bank holidays?

CuriousCatfish · 23/05/2022 17:55

Buses are often Sunday service on Bank holidays so don't usually start until later on in the day.

It's meant to be sizzling, hope it is where you are.

Each to their own
I think its a great thing to celebrate willbring communities together and noone in the world can showcase these types of celebrations as well as us
Was in london last week and its going to look fantastic

GnomeDePlume · 23/05/2022 18:10

DH is working as normal. I am looking to alternating my time between sewing machine and allotment. Can't wait!

CounsellorTroi · 23/05/2022 18:15

It's my birthday on the Friday and I'm definitely prioritising celebrating that over celebrating the jubilee.

goodsturdygirl · 23/05/2022 18:16

100% agree. Feel guilty about feeling this way as there are so many things going on to celebrate! Yet I don't have even the tiniest bit of enthusiasm.

mmmmmmghturep · 23/05/2022 18:22

@saveforthat Braintree Essex

mmmmmmghturep · 23/05/2022 18:23

we have never had a Sunday service at all and on bank holidays the buses dont run at all.

Swayingpalmtrees · 23/05/2022 18:23

I usually love this kind of thing, but it is only hotels around here serving very expensive Jubilee afternoon teas, thankfully no parties in the street. I simply can not summon up the energy to care about it. We are all mostly worn out, and don't need the extra work involved. We have Ukraine flags everywhere not union jacks.

We have taken the chance to book a place by the sea and take some time out, swim in the sea, read and decompress. Most of dc are revising so definitely not interested in socialising. I can't wait for a few days off. So I am glad it is here but not for the same reasons as intended. The festivities are non existent here and no one is really thinking about it.

housemaus · 23/05/2022 18:24

I don't know anyone personally who's throwing a Jubilee party - our street are, but we're going out for the day so that nosy Mhari doesn't knock on to ask if we're joining them.

I'm kind of surprised by how much some places/people(?) are really going in for it because, as I said, I don't know anyone personally who's treating it as anything other than an extra day off work.

Pieceofpurplesky · 23/05/2022 18:32

There are loads of events on in my village but I will have my feet up and eat lots of nice food. Probably make an afternoon tea, bbq and spend
Some time reading in the garden. DS will be mid A Levels but will no doubt keep popping up to explain his republican views every time he sees the Queen!
I quite enjoy watching some of the TV stuff - the parade will entertaining. She's an old lady, let her have her day for those that love her.

Diverseopinions · 23/05/2022 18:34

Wow...there are some really literary and fancy user names on this thread. It's as if a lot of people have got very intellectual and very creative, all at once.

It's a celebration which gives everybody something - days off. People generally like coming together and public displays of something: e.g., , clapping nurses and other health workers. People can be churlish about the Queen, but she has 'ruled', sat on the throne, over a period of immense systemic change: the inception of the NHS was just before her coronation, and other welfare reforms No doubt schools will be putting an inclusive slant on the commemoration.

Mischance · 23/05/2022 18:35

It's a good excuse for a bit of fun - I just ignore all the gung-ho stuff.

Smartiepants79 · 23/05/2022 18:38

So just carry on living your life as you normally would, maybe just enjoying an extra day off.
No one is for one you to participate or have anything to do with it. Not worth getting your knickers in a twist about.
I also don’t really understand why it doesn’t ‘fit’ with what’s going on right now? You’d rather everyone sat at home being miserable and stressing about things they can’t really change like foreign wars or cost of living crises??

Benjispruce4 · 23/05/2022 18:42

I work in primary school so can’t escape it. We are having a Jubilee afternoon so that’s enough for me. Looking forward to breaking up a day early in July instead. No street parties here and not seen any union flags. Don’t have a probably with patriotism though.

Benjispruce4 · 23/05/2022 18:42

Problem not probably

MrsAvocet · 23/05/2022 18:51

We won't be doing anything. Well we will do what we'd normally do on a bank holiday - go out sailing or for a bike ride weather permitting. I don't even know if there's much happening round us. I haven't gone out of my way to find out and haven't noticed any posters or anything.
You don't need to join in anything you don't want. It would be perfectly reasonable to go for a walk or something if you want to avoid local events

onthefencesitter · 23/05/2022 18:52

Maybe its just me, but I don't know anyone who is celebrating... or who has even mentioned it (aside from 'yay we have four days off!')

@OrchardBlack out of curiosity, what are patriotic colours?

Vikinga · 23/05/2022 19:01

In the same way that I'm not religious yet still celebrate xmas , I will enjoy socialising with my street despite not being bothered by the monarchy

AnotherEmma · 23/05/2022 19:02

I'm looking forward to the extra time off work (for me and DH) and the 4-day week.

I agree with you, OP, that the patriotism doesn't feel right. Personally, after Brexit and as a general response to the fiasco that is Boris Johnson in charge of anything, my patriotism is pretty much at an all-time low.

I don't particularly mind the Royal Family but I am not one bit interested in all the Royal-themed crap that's being marketed at us. People can't afford it, anyway, you're right.

It's a shame we don't have relatively uncomplicated national celebrations like some countries do (4th July in US, 14th July in France, etc).
