Someone has blocked my driveway abs I cannot get out. Too late to start knocking on doors (10:38pm) here in Uk. What can I do? Need to get kids to school in morning and I need to get to work. What can I do if they don’t move it by morning?

Check it again in the morning, if they are still there get everyone ready, get in the car and sit on the horn until the culprit appears.

Zaab213 · 16/05/2022 22:40

I live in London if that helps with specific advice.

Call the police and report an abandoned vehicle if the don't appear after knocking in the morning?

CorpseReviver · 16/05/2022 22:42

My husband once borrowed my mum's car and accidentally parked it late at night blocking our neighbours' driveway.

We were woken at 6am the next morning by my (understandably very pissed off) mum, who had been phoned by the police after the (understandably very pissed off) neighbour had phoned them.

So, long story short, call the police non emergency number in the morning and they will contact the owner/keeper and ask them to move it.

(We made amends to the neighbours and my mum with lots of gifts and apologies btw.)

Scarlettjones24 · 16/05/2022 22:43

I would knock anyway. What if you needed to take one of the children to hospital in the night.

Musicalmaestro · 16/05/2022 22:43

What time do you have to leave? Hopefully it will be gone by then, otherwise see above.

Ha! Look forward to a 48 hour wait!

PostItNoteScribbles · 16/05/2022 22:43

Agree - in the morning sound your Horn until its moved. Cheeky buggers!

Wolfiefan · 16/05/2022 22:43

Any lights on? I would knock.

carefullycourageous · 16/05/2022 22:44

I would knock now.

buckeejit · 16/05/2022 22:45

I'd knock now too but imagine it will be gone on the morning. Good luck

Zaab213 · 16/05/2022 22:47

I need to leave at 7:30 / 7:40am the latest.

I did actually call non emergency number (101) but was on hold for 20 minutes so gave up and posted here. I’ve left a note on the car saying “please don’t park here as you’ve blocked my driveway” but I’m really anxious about knocking on doors tomorrow morning. I’m also worried in case the person reads the note and threatens me lol! I’m a very anxious person.

I can see bedroom lights on but none at the bottom. I can’t go knocking now so will see in morning.

Oh I agree with pp but I would go out and blaze the horn now, yep it will piss of the other neighbours but will bring out the culprit

DuesToTheDirt · 16/05/2022 22:49

What if you needed to take one of the children to hospital in the night.

Only on mumsnet are parents on standby to drive their children to hospital day or night, at the drop of a hat.

OneTC · 16/05/2022 22:50

Go and find out if it's got an alarm

Testina · 16/05/2022 22:52

Despite the number of threads on MN that suggest the contrary, it’s actually very very rare for someone to completely block in someone else.

Most likely situation here is that the owner fully expects that you’ve turned in for the night, and plans to be away well before you’re up. Not even in the morning - they may be off at midnight.

So don’t stress about it - most likely it will resolve itself. Not that I’m defending it! Set your alarm an hour early so you have time to check and start knocking.

Liking this!

I'd knock now - you need to get to the hospital

But common courtesy would be to knock on the door or post a note saying “sorry I’ve blocked you will be out by x time, call me if you need me to move before on this number.” That’s what I would do, not blocked anyone in but that’s what I would do if I had to

My police force will remove cars causing an obstruction. Id try 101 again in a bit when the phone lines have settled down a bit. Youd be amazed how quickly we can find a registered keepers phone number

dropthevipers · 16/05/2022 22:56

Brick through the windscreen followed by a molotov cocktail. Then call the police/fire brigade saying an abandoned car is on fire outside your house. I'm not entirely joking either.

Thank you! Will do again. Will morning be better?

Try and set off the car alarm now

Testina · 16/05/2022 23:01

@Zaab213 of course that’s common courtesy. But it doesn’t change my reply.
If you’re not prepared to door knock tonight, then go to bed and don’t worry about it, because it’s unlikely to be there in the morning.

Give yourself an extra hour on your alarm to find the owner.

If the owner has disappeared (dumped stolen car) then you’ll not get it moved by the police in time for school run anyway.

So for my own peace of mind, I’d work out my options for work and school now - bus, taxi, combinations of late to school or late to work… none of that’s good, but just working out how to handle it will be useful.

I really think it’ll be gone soon. It’s a booty call!
