To be annoyed over a tub of egg mayo?

Squiff70 · 15/05/2022 12:25

Yesterday morning we went shopping. We got lunch supplies for the next few days. I chose egg mayo as a sandwich filler and DP chose deli meats like chorizo.

I've just come to make lunch and found he's eaten my egg mayo. A full fucking tub. He has been known to pile it high on sandwiches but only after he's asked if we can share. This time he didn't ask.

I can't have deli meats due to being pregnant but I don't like them either, so now I have nothing for lunch. I'm fuming.

He's been in the bathroom for 40 minutes so far and has only just got in the shower. Why do men need to take a half-hour poo in preparation? He'll be at least 20 minutes in the shower than at least another 20 minutes after having a shave, so I can't send him out to get something else for lunch. My parents are coming this afternoon and I need a shower before they arrive. Instead I'm looking after our 2 year old daughter in my dressing gown and feeling grubby as well as hungry.

I also need a wee and we have no other barhroom/toilet so I'm getting very irritated.

AIBU?

Oof. This was meant to be light hearted. Now I remember why people should never start threads in AIBU 🤣

We don't have any mayo (or any spare time today to be making egg mayo) as my parents are coming this afternoon. I haven't seen them since last September. We also don't have any cheese or other meats. No eggs either as we always end up throwing more away than we actually use. Sure, I could have the deli meats that I don't like, and put our unborn baby at risk if I get listeria, but that's clearly besides the point.

He emerged from the bathroom and I told him, calmly, that I was annoyed I couldn't have lunch because he'd eaten the one thing I chose for myself (of course we share food and I don't expect him to ask permission but he knew the circumstances here). He said "fine, I'll go and get you a tub of egg mayo" and picked up the car key. I pointed out that DD was half way through her lunch, wasn't dressed and that he'd have to take her with him so I can have a shower. My parents are coming this afternoon (very soon in fact) so there isn't time for him to faff about for hours whilst I look after DD until he comes back from the supermarket, leaving me no time for a shower OR my lunch. I've just come upstairs and left him sorting DD. He will have to finish her lunch, change her nappy, get her dressed AND take her with him. He isn't happy but only because it means he can't spend the next 90 minutes playing games on his phone just because he was selfish.

But... thanks for the female solidarity ;)

I think the lessons here for you are

  1. Stop being such a fuxking martyr and
  2. Get better at food shopping if him eating 1 tub of sandwich filler causes such a drama that you have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ELSE to eat for lunch.

How do people like you function? It sounds bloody miserable.

Yes I'm in the UK. DP had a lunchtime shower because he spent all morning helping with doing jobs I struggle to do - cleaning out our two bunnies, going in the loft to put some stuff away and vacuuming the stairs. I have considerable health problems as well as being pregnant so I am truly grateful for all his help and absolutely do not begrudge him a shower (at any time of day). The reason I wasn't washed or dressed was because whilst DP was doing these jobs, I was cleaning a bit downstairs (just light dusting etc) whilst playing with and reading books to our little girl. DP and I both wanted to get jobs done before having showers.

Next time you post please have an itemised schedule so you don't force MN to ask you all these intrusive pesky questions, would you? Thanks in advance.

@Natty13 did you join the thread just to abuse the OP?

It's all done and dusted now so no need for you to jump in with your thoughtful insights

Giraffesandbottoms · 15/05/2022 15:12

The bunnies aren't house bunnies. They are residing in a custom-built 12ft shed temporarily, until we move house and arrange better long-term accommodation for them!

do they work well in conjunction with the 2 year old? One of mine is circa 2 and we are thinking of similar/shed accommodation etc so interested to know

It's not compulsory to have a passport
Maybe they haven't planned to go on holiday yet and Werent they probably born in lockdown?

if your parents live abroad it’s pretty sensible to get your child a passport. My second was born in lockdown and we managed to get one - I thought it was just what everyone does; gets their child a passport once they are registered after birth. Saves problems and stress when you need to go somewhere.

Literally no point in getting a baby a passport unless you actually plan to travel. What a waste of money.

Giraffesandbottoms · 15/05/2022 15:13

@Nanny0gg

I am just surprised I seriously thought everyone immediately got their child a passport. Like a birth certificate. It’s quite worrying that people are having children if they can’t afford something basic like a passport.

They might be able to afford a passport. But not a holiday. Therefore, total waste of money.

Surely you’d be stupid to buy a passport you didn’t intend to use? Basics are food, fuel, housing etc not passports 🤣

What would have been the point in buying a passport during lockdown with nowhere to go? You'd be wasting nearly 2 of the 5 years you get on a child passport.

No, it's not something everybody does when their child is born

Giraffesandbottoms · 15/05/2022 15:17

This explains why there are always people panicking about their children’s passport just before a holiday! The thought of not having a passport ready to go for emergencies like funerals abroad makes me very twitchy.

didn’t know a child passport is only 5 years though that’s very good to know so I can line up the next one

BarbaraofSeville · 15/05/2022 15:19

Fucking hell I've heard it all now.

A basic requirement for having a child is getting them a passport.

This child was born in lockdown, it would been well on the way to expiring by now without ever using it.

FirewomanSam · 15/05/2022 15:20

Goldijobsandthe3bears · 15/05/2022 15:03

It’s not like either of those examples, I haven’t said you can’t just that I haven’t seeeeeeeeeeen it 🤯 and I wanted to try it so 😛

Yes @Goldijobsandthe3bears I realise now I probably lumped you in with some of the more disingenuous posters who were using their ignorance about ready-made egg mayo as some kind of humblebrag about how they always make everything from scratch and wouldn’t possibly eat such a thing. Apologies.

And now I really want some egg mayo!

AcrossthePond55 · 15/05/2022 15:21

@Squiff70 You did the right thing by laying what he caused right in his lap and then not facilitating him in fixing it.

Good grief, HE created the problem, HE needed to solve it. Once again people are suggesting that a woman fix what a man caused by running to the store herself, cooking egg mayo, cancelling her parent's visit, eating food she doesn't want, change the way she stocks food in case he (again) wants to eat something earmarked for someone/something else, and a myriad of other things that lets him off the hook. Just NO.

If DH or I eat something of the other's, then it's up to the 'eater' to replace it. Why on Earth shouldn't it be?

It's only a basic requirement for 1 person. Never in my life have I heard a passport be referred to as a basic requirement or have I ever met anyone who had one for a baby 'just in case'

Ahh so they are too irresponsible as well as too poor for children 😋

You can't conceive the possibility that people may have no relatives abroad and no wish to holiday abroad with young children?

Me too 😁 Bloody love egg mayonnaise

This thread is bonkers. The over analysing of OP's life. I buy egg mayo as well but I'm lazy. My dd is having it for her packed lunch tomorrow. No one has eaten it yet. We all have passports though. Not a fan of Chorizo.

Glad you got your egg mayo OP.

If you post something which goes along the gist of 'someone in the house has eaten something I wanted to have' and the claim that you therefore have NO lunch to eat AND cant use the loo AND that all of this has an impact because you have parents visiting AND then drip in that they too cannot buy anything for you on the way because they're very ill and elderly AND then drip in but they've travelled a vast distance in their elderly and ill condition

All the while implying that for some reason your partner is spending 'too long' in the shower (what is too long?)

Then people are going to ask a lot of questions about that due to the nonsense of the whole thing.

Thats without the fact that OP, despite it all being lighthearted apparently, then got rude with people

skyeisthelimit · 15/05/2022 15:35

I thought most people didn't get their DC a passport until they needed one. I got DD one when she went abroad for the first time, aged 11.

Why on earth would I waste money buying her 2 passports prior to that if we weren't travelling abroad? There is no way that it is a basic requirement for a child. Not everyone can afford to go abroad , not everyone has family who live abroad.

no! I don’t know anyone who doesn’t do this. I’m not even being facetious I seriously didn’t know this was a thing. As I said my second was born in lock down but actually when it was possible we travelled a few times - to visit a dying relative and then to go to their funeral.

Theoldwoman · 15/05/2022 15:38

I was wondering what the heck egg mayo was!
I thought a mayonnaise made with whole eggs?

After reading a few replies, I understand now. Sounds yuck. Boil some eggs add mayonnaise, salt and pepper and even some curry powder! Yum!

That sounds like devilled eggs 🥚

I didn't go abroad until I was in my early 30s, should my parents, and me as a 20 something adult, have spent hundreds of pounds on passports that I didn't need?
