I've just seen the videos and have been reading up on this, utterly gobsmacked..
I mean, you'd think they'd have left the funeral take place?

Feeling you are alone against the world surrounded with enemies who want you dead, it's no wonder there is terrible behaviour. It doesn't mean we ignore it and pretend it's not happening.

You are referring to the Palestinians......? You know, the people who have been dispossessed of their land for over 7 decades, the people whose interests and welfare no one seems to care about anymore...

Or are you referring to Israel - an immensely rich state backed and financed by the most powerful nation on earth, a nation with a huge and well equipped army, and (it is rumored...) nuclear capability?

Well quite.

Again antecedents, not excuses. Seeking to understand why something is, doesn't mean you condone it.

This. Only one side of the story is ever told when it comes to Israel.

Nope, not true at all.

For far too long the world has turned a blind eye to the terrible things Israel is doing. Shame on Israel and shame on the world for allowing it.

TooBigForMyBoots · 15/05/2022 02:01

The funeral procession didn't follow the road blocks that had been set up for them and it became a politically charged procession. You are not allowed to hoist the flag or sing the national anthem or chant politically motivated words.

How very dare mourners at a funeral mourn in a way befitting of the deceased and bereaved! Imagine, carrying a coffin like that. Nope, they all got what they deserved with their violent mourning, rituals and pall bearing.Hmm

daretodenim · 14/05/2022 07:10

So we are supposed to believe that Palestinians killed Sherine and the pallbearers were skilled enough to carry the body of their loved one while throwing stones at police?

Aye right.

In the background of the photo, groups of boys are standing on top of the wall. They look as if they are throwing stones. It's a tradition to do that.
I wish people here would not side so zealously with either Israeli forces or Palestinian ones. We aren-t there. We only know what we are told.

In the foreground, adult members of the police force are battering pall bearers. I wish people here would stop excusing the inexcusable.Hmm

It's nothing new.
Shocked its been reported correctly to be honest.
Even more shocked that its on mumsnet..expect it to be deleted soon...

There is always the possibility of a stray bullet.

My point is though, none of us know for sure, we weren't there. We aren't carrying out the investigation. Perhaps best to wait for the investigation to conclude.

However, that's never an option with Israel, people just want to attack without evidence.

The people who were there are sure who was firing at them. The producer who was shot just before her, is sure what happened. The journalist beside her who was shot at when she tried to move her body. They're all clear what happened. You weren't there. They were.
Your apologism and misinformation is disrespectful. Shooting a journalist clearly marked as press in broad daylight and then targeting her funeral is despicable. And there should be more outcry about this, not attempts to lie about what happened. The press deserve to be safe. This isn't just an attack on an individual. It's an attack on press freedom.

Sorry but Isreal are indefensible here and their actions were despicable. That’s why they are being attacked.

mynamesnotMa · 15/05/2022 06:24

Awful. Israel should be ashamed of themselves

LakieLady · 15/05/2022 06:44

It's a long time since I've been shocked by anything the Israeli forces inflict on the Palestinians, but this was a new low.

KitKatKit · 15/05/2022 06:56

I can't believe posters on this thread are trying to defend the acts of the Israeli soldiers here.
It smacks of the "what abouttery" usually reserved for the closet racists on Mumsnet.

Disgusted by the actions of the Israeli soldiers and disgusted by those trying to find a reason to excuse their behaviour.

NannyOggsWhiskyStash · 15/05/2022 07:01

TooBigForMyBoots · 14/05/2022 03:07

Was this a show of strength by Israel? To display how they will do whatever they want, no matter how disgusting? No matter how undignified? No matter how unjustifiable?

If so, it's worked. The world gets it. Shame on the government of Israel. Shame on the IDF.😠

They should take heed of what is happening to Soviet soldiers in Ukraine. Crimes against humanity will be prosecuted and you will be in the dock.

What? A journalist is murdered and her funeral party attacked and you equate this to invading Russian soldiers being killed?

Yes it's an unfair story but why don't the many rich Arab countries help Palestine?

Answer imv is it suits their politics to have an 'evil' Israel - in fact the rich Arab countries could sort out the Palestinian refugee problem. The Palestinians are left to suffer whilst HAMAS 'fights' for its cause. This is bombing Israel, terrorism. As long as the Arabs want to use terrorism against Israel it will continue. In summary Arab countries/ HAMAS prefer to leave the Palestinians to suffer for their cause than use their wealth to fix it.

phishy · 15/05/2022 07:19

@Ferngreen Arab countries can’t magic up land for Palestinians that they had for centuries.

What are riot police even doing there? It's a funeral for God's sake. Unless they came looking for a scrap...

MissyB1 · 15/05/2022 07:57

Sadly I am no longer surprised at the appalling treatment of the Palestinian people by Israeli forces. It seems pretty much constant now. They won’t give a shit that the world saw how they behaved at this poor woman’s funeral. They know they can do what the hell they like and get away with it.
To those defending what happened - go away and have a serious word with yourselves. Try and have some bloody decency.

DowningStreetParty · 15/05/2022 08:09

Please god let there be a peace process in our lifetimes that works. The international community need to act.

Rainallnight · 15/05/2022 08:17

No, they can't but Israel itself is tiny - 8,000 sq miles. The UK is 93,000 sq miles.

But the Palestinians could live in Israel as well as the rest of the area if the terrorists stopped. But as long as HAMAS fight and bomb why would Israelis risk letting them live in Israel. Also the Palestinian refugees in Jordan could be given proper accommodation and helped to live normal lives but they prefer to leave them in miserable situation. Googling - 412,000 palestinians live in Jordanian refugee camps - but it serves the purpose of painting Israel as bad. Sheer misery for the sake of political manipulation.

Jedsnewstar · 15/05/2022 09:29

Your op is criticising Israel? It means by their own law you are being anti-Semitic.

Insane isn’t it?

Thesefeetaremadeforwalking · 15/05/2022 09:34

I watched the video and the Israeli Police did NOT "attack the funeral procession" as has been claimed. To claim otherwise is disingeneous.

They were trying to stop a crowd gathering around the coffin and kept people back to stop an incident starting.

Using a bier on wheels would have prevented the coffin being unstable. The choice of the bearers in this situation was not the fault of the Israeli Police.

PaterPower · 15/05/2022 09:41

”You are not allowed to hoist the flag or sing the national anthem or chant politically motivated words.”

Try reading that back to yourself and reflect on whether you’d be OK living under rules like that imposed on you by a State you were born into, but that doesn’t even attempt to represent you.

Particularly a State that likes to describe itself as the “only democracy in the Middle East” and which is given billions of USD in direct aid from the US on that basis.

donquixotedelamancha · 15/05/2022 09:47

Obviously terrorism is never excusable, with that caveat:

I wonder how all those Palestinians got crammed into the occupied teratories and refugee camps in the first place? Was that before or after Hamas formed?

I wonder how the UK would cope with half a million refugees? Would we even let them in? Jordan has 1/7th of our population and a fraction of our livable land.

It seems bizare to me to claim that Jordan could sort the situation out but imply that Israel can't. It's a very messy and complex situation now but Israel could start by treating Palestinians with dignity and respect and trying to alleviate some of the crippling poverty.

Hamas terrorists have murdered 144 Israeli civilians in 15 years. Israeli Soldiers have murdered 883 Palestinian children and thousands of other civilians in that time. Hamas existing doesn't excuse keeping 5 million people prisioner.

Are we watching to different videos? The police were hitting the people carrying the coffin and you are saying the mourners should have planned for that?

From independent journalists- the crowed surrounded the coffin because the police sealed the area it was in and approached it in riot gear.
