A non-food shop so like matalan, new look, next etc as long as she is in a sling and doesn't touch the floor?

It depends on the shop OP, so ignore what everyone else says and ring the shop.

Some places like John Lewis allow all dogs, others only allow assistance dogs.

@Plumbear2 because I can tie her outside a shop when she is allowed on the ground? 🤯 Obviously can't do that just now.

Don’t do this! Far too many dog thieves around. Either stick to dog friendly places or leave her at home

nearlyspringyay · 11/05/2022 12:28

I've seen dogs in Next and Primark recently, on the ground, not pups and not clearly assistance dogs. Doesnt bother me, but I can understand why some wouldn't like it.

I wouldn't trust DDog in a shop, he'd be cocking his leg on everything.

Pugfostermum · 11/05/2022 12:28

It depends on the shop.

I asked the security guy at Morrisons and he was lovely and said he hadn’t seen me.

In the range I was reprimanded a little.

My puppy was 1.5kg , in a sling, asleep and completely inconspicuous…….

mrsfoof · 11/05/2022 12:29

It depends. Our local shopping mall is dog friendly and lots of the shops within (many chain stores like New Look, Fat Face, Lush, Pandora etc.) welcome dogs.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 11/05/2022 12:33

Please don’t tie your dog up outside the shop 🙁 This is stressful for them and you are likely to find it gone on your return. People don’t do this now. People used to leave babies in prams outside shops. They don’t do this now either!

manzolini · 11/05/2022 12:36

I phoned the store. She said as long as she was being held and not on the ground then that is fine and that loads of people do it

Do NOT do this. Your puppy will be at huge risk of getting stolen.

If you can't take her with you, leave her at home.

Astrabees · 11/05/2022 12:38

John Lewis welcome dogs, if that helps.

Rinoachicken · 11/05/2022 12:38

I have a dog, but I don’t agree with dogs in shops. It’s just not necessary.

Besides the risk of dogs having a sneaky piss or shit that goes unnoticed until another unsuspecting customer slips over in it, I also don’t want to buy new clothes, cushions etc that have dog hair on them from random passing dogs!

It’s bad enough getting the hair off from my own dog! If I’m buying something new I expect it to be clean and hair and slobber free (at least until I get it home!!)

Maybe 10-20 years ago but these days your dog will either get nicked or distressed by people poking it.

MyneighbourisTotoro · 11/05/2022 12:39

Depends on the shop OP, where I live a lot of high street shops welcomes dogs! Next, new look, H&M etc, it’s really up to the store and the region you live in I think. You’d best call ahead and ask first otherwise find a sitter if you can

That's fab ☺️

Most shops are totally fine with puppies IMO and it's excellent socialisation for them too!

Spidey66 · 11/05/2022 12:41

My dog just didn't go out until she'd had her jabs. She only goes out shopping if the two of us are with her, so if the shop doesn't allow it she stays outside. You need to ask each shop individually.

Redburnett · 11/05/2022 12:42

No

ShirleyPhallus · 11/05/2022 12:44

Have you forgotten MN collectively hates dogs OP? ;)

Taking a puppy out pre-jabs in a sling to get them used to sights, sounds and smells is normal and recommended. I’d do it (and did do it), puppy remained asleep or peered around and enjoyed the fuss.

FrangipaniBlue · 11/05/2022 12:44

I'd be questioning which irresponsible breeder allowed or why you think it's acceptable for a puppy to be taken away from its mother at 9 weeks old

10HailMarys · 11/05/2022 12:46

Most non-food shops are fine with you bringing a puppy or a small dog in with you if you're carrying them - if you're carrying your dog, it has no impact on other shoppers. It's not peeing on the floor, it's not tripping anyone up, it's not touching any of the goods and it's not touching any of the other shoppers.

BarbaraofSeville · 11/05/2022 12:47

Seems lots of people are unaware that lots of shops have started allowing dogs in now. I don't know about Matalan but it's not that blanket no that you would assume.

When we were in Malta last year, people had their dogs walking up and down the aisles of the supermarket like it was a completely normal thing to do.

Sally090807 · 11/05/2022 12:27

I have a dog and I agree. John Lewis allow dogs in store now and one looked like it was about to cock its leg up on a sofa when I was in there last week.

i don’t agree with them in restaurants/coffee shops either.

As A dog owner I find the new breed of owners, who insists on taking their dogs everywhere, awful.

I mean why drive your dog to a retail park to take it in a shop? Ludicrous.

the last shop I was in that allowed a dog in was not a pleasant experience. it took a huge steaming shit in the aisle, the owner walked out and left the shop staff to deal with it. The dog owner on a retail park, that dragged his dog past several shops whilst it plopped along on several paving slabs, also wasn’t prepared for the event because he left it for others to stand in. I’d seen him prior to the event walking along with a huge grin and a ‘look at me’ swagger. Idiot.

I’d hate to see a dog in a shop.

I see them taken into charity shops regularly in my local high street, I always thought dogs weren’t allowed but they don’t seem to care

Iheartmysmart · 11/05/2022 12:49

I took my dog loads of places when he was a tiny pup. We went on the bus, train journeys, into shops and pubs and even into school with permission. He’s now 11 and unfazed by pretty much every situation going. They need new experiences while they are small.

It’s standard to take puppies home between 8-10 weeks

I was going to say the same thing, would never leave my dog outside a shop nowadays, not ever

8-10 weeks is standard and perfectly acceptable.
