A non-food shop so like matalan, new look, next etc as long as she is in a sling and doesn't touch the floor?

another customer had a really nasty go at me once in one of the most dog friendly cafes in the Lake District once, seriously the sort of place with baskets of dog towels and bowls of biscuits. My very well behaved, small dog was sat on the floor by the side of my table. He wanted the dog under the table. Oh how I laughed. If he had been nicer I might have been nicer. But he properly marched up and hissed in my ear. I pointed out he was being extremely rude and maybe he ought to find another cafe if been 3ft away from a dog which was doing nothing in a dog friendly cafe upset him so much.

Bloody good for you. Entitled prat.

If I dog friendly

Dog slings are the most fucking ridiculous thing I've heard of (recently)

I wonder how those of us who had dogs before they were a thing coped! 😑

I think people used to put them in handbags.

Why would a puppy be in a sling?

If it hasn’t had its vaccinations yet so can’t be on the floor.

Often guide dog puppy walkers (or puppy raisers as they’re now called) take their pups out in slings as soon as they get them so they become used to going into shops etc.

FourChimneys · 11/05/2022 15:09

It's getting so hard to find shops, and more importantly cafes, where dogs are not allowed.

A cafe in my town allows dogs on the chairs and sofas. I will never ever go into such a grimly unhygienic place.

Where I live dogs are allowed in most shops, including the butchers (!), cafes, pubs and restaurants. It’s a very doggy area!

It annoys me that some people think dogs come fully trained and socialised, they have to learn/experience just like children but generally end up better behaved!

Yeah - but I’m not sure Matalan is the place to train or socialise a dog 🐶

AlternativePerspective · 11/05/2022 15:14

TurquoiseSwirl · 11/05/2022 14:57

What’s it to you? Those people with really bad dog allergies who know they can’t go into some pubs etc and assume they are safe going to fucking clothes shops. Some people are that allergic it doesn’t tatter if they’re not on the ground

However do you cope when you see an assistance dog then? After all a dog is a dog, and actually the younger they are when they go out the more likely they are to behave.

It’s interesting that I’ve never come across this anti dog sentiment in rl that sees to exist on MN.

Although I did have one woman once shout at me in the butchers that my guide dog shouldn’t be allowed in there as she has had allergies and she might die. This was after she’d stood next to me for 5 minutes chatting to the butcher and making her purchases and only started shouting when I left.

Your optimism is touching, if misplaced. Public sofas are never hygienic, dogs or no dogs. People manage to be gross enough all by themselves.

And guide dogs are allowed in all shops and cafes. There is no such thing as a totally dog-free cafe in this country.

I much prefer sitting on a sofa that hosted a dog than a kid with a cold that wiped his nose on their hand and sprayed the germs all over.

Where is this café? My dog would have a field day there 😂

I would also say, as someone who used to work in retail and hospitality, the sofas and chairs you find in restaurants and cafés are nowhere as hygienic as you might hope!

JungleBungles · 11/05/2022 15:27

I used to take mine in a trolly (on a blanket) before they had their second jabs around pets at home - was mainly for socialising more than anything else my breeder said it was a good way of getting them used to the car, noises etc did it with all 3 of mine

would never put a puppy in a sling tho 🤷‍♀️

I have seen people change nappies on cafe tables. The seating is the least of my worries.

nalabae · 11/05/2022 15:30

No, although I would love to see dogs in shops. People are allergic to dogs so clothes stores probably want to avoid reactions

dworky · 11/05/2022 15:35

I see lots of dogs in shops & as long as they're being held or in a sling, I can't see how there's a problem.

Eastlyne · 11/05/2022 15:41

OP's attitude is pretty typical of people who will do this whether they are told they are making other people uncomfortable or not. They don't care, so I don't know why they bother to ask.

I like dogs. But I think some environments should remain dog-free, to make them accessible to the widest range of humans, for whom they are intended.

But if the shop is happy for the dog to be there what’s the issue? Lots of people have preferences for shops but ultimately if everyone follows the shops rules nobody is doing anything wrong- including the OP. I nearly fell over the other day when a toddler crashed into my legs (heavily pregnant) and her father just smiled indulgently at me. So I could say children in prams or holding parents hands should be a rule . Or I’d also like to see crowd control in shops on numbers to stop them getting absolutely packed. Unfortunately I don’t get those things as it’s up to the shop @Eastlyne

Oh yes it was me! Don't be so ridiculous.

In our village dogs are allowed in the pharmacy, charity shop, and post office.
Lots of cafes welcome dogs and their owners.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 11/05/2022 12:02

Not miserable, Just don't like dogs being took into human spaces ie clothes shops, I find it quite disrespectful actually.

It's important for puppies to be socialised with humans outside the home to make sure that they don't end up scared of them. Fear aggression in dogs is often down to insufficient socialisation in the critical development phase that ends when they're approx 4 months old.

It's the responsible thing for puppy owners to do.

rainbowmilk · 11/05/2022 16:05

I'd much rather a puppy in a shop than a baby/toddler. Both of them pee and shit, both of them make noise, both of them are untrained, neither of them are hygienic - but only one of them is cute.

I still think about the time I got to meet a golden retriever puppy that was in a sling - was having a rubbish day at work and it made my day.

YANBU, OP, I'd be delighted to see your puppy in Matalan.

B&q are dog friendly as are Go Outdoors. Places like White stuff, joule’s and fat face are as well. Think John Lewis is.

Waterstones allow dogs in, so do Homebase, and most garden centres. Pubs are good for socialising puppies, as are boot fairs and street markets.

We have another bookshop/stationers in town where they're so dog friendly they keep dog treats under the till.

Yeah my friend still does this, when I look after them they come with bags. I stick them on leads and walk them though and the sky hasn't fallen down yet

Important for the puppies. Not important for the people who want to buy a multipack of knickers or whatever without a bloody dog being there when there’s no need.

People posting on MN exist in real life. It’s not just a weird anti-dog bot conspiracy.

But shops, cafes and restaurants all exist to make money - and there are millions of dog owners in this country, so excluding dog owners just doesn't make financial sense.

MN's feelings aside, most people don't hate dogs and aren't remotely bothered by their presence in jobs. And although some posters on here would have yo believe that all dogs are the work of the devil, most dogs are actually pretty well-behaved and don't walk around shitting on the floor and peeing up shop displays 😉

daisyjgrey · 11/05/2022 16:15

I'd be delighted by a small floofy dog in a sling while I was wandering around Primark. Crack on!

I didn't realise the presence of animals other than homo sapiens had such an effect on the power to purchase knickers.

I suppose if there were genuine wolves in the shop that might put a crimp in it somewhat but unless a dachshund is playing tug of war with M&S' finest value pants I'm not sure how it would affect anyone.
