Can I take a puppy into a shop?

A non-food shop so like matalan, new look, next etc as long as she is in a sling and doesn't touch the floor?

This.

I cannot see any good reason to take a dog into a shop. Why would a dog ever need to go into a shop?

The dog wouldn't need to, but the owner might.

My dogs came into shops a lot when we were on holiday. You can't leave them alone in holiday cottages, it's not safe to leave them outside shops or in cars, so sometimes there's no alternative.

I suspect that's one of the reasons that areas popular with holiday makers have a lot of dog-friendly shops.

Argos let them in- I walk my dog to Argos

OP's attitude is pretty typical of people who will do this whether they are told they are making other people uncomfortable or not. They don't care, so I don't know why they bother to ask.

I like dogs. But I think some environments should remain dog-free, to make them accessible to the widest range of humans, for whom they are intended.

But no environment is guaranteed completely dog free, so people with allergies etc can never know for sure whether there might be a dog in a restaurant, clothes shop etc.

So putting it on dog owners to provide environments which simply can't exist anyway.

I discovered that Lush is dog-friendly by accident. I was at the entrance with my dog waiting for my sister to finish shopping and one of the shop assistants invited me in, dog and all. I carried him (even though he is entirely too large to be carried) because I didn’t want him getting in anyone’s way. He rather enjoyed his impromptu shopping trip Grin

The smell in Lush is so strong it makes me feel ill if I go in. I'm amazed that a dog, with their far superior sense of smell, can tolerate it.

TeaBug · 11/05/2022 16:42

Seriously, it's not hard. Dogs do not belong in clothes shops, restaurants, cafes etc

I work in a small charity shop and sometimes people ask if they can bring their dog in and I say sorry, no. Sometimes they just bring them in and have to be asked to take them out again. Whichever it is they always seem shocked to the core. Like it should be me who's leaving🤷‍♀️

What if staff don't like dogs? Are fearful or even have allergies?
They can't avoid the dogs

Neither can other customers. A collie bit our Saturday checkout staff member last year, he walked round the trolley to scan a large item and he was bitten by a collie.

Our store has been mentioned on here as 'dog friendly' but no, it's not, it just doesn't sell food so people think it's fair game

All branches of Argos?? Really?

I'd be delighted by a small floofy dog in a sling while I was wandering around Primark. Crack on!

Small ones bite just like larger breeds....once you let one in then you have to let ALL breeds/sizes in

But even if all shops ban pet dogs, they're not allowed to ban guide dogs or assistance dogs.

If you're allergic to or terrified of dogs, then working in a dog-friendly shop or establishment probably isn't a good idea to begin with.

If staff don't like dogs or have allergies, then they're going to have to find some way to exist in the world because even without pet dogs being admitted, service dogs exist.

not found 1 that doesn't
stand alone- not in Sainsburys

I live in a large town and a large city. My dog is out and about with shops within a couple of minutes of both. He loves walk up to Oxford street or Covent Garden

MaMaLa321 · 11/05/2022 17:53

I've had 2 much-loved dogs but I still could have a sense of proportion where it was appropriate to take them. One of the problems with Lockdown is that people can't seem to be away from their dogs.
So no, I don't hate dogs. But I don't want them in shops.
For the sake of inclusivity, our Cathedral is now dog friendly as well.

NellesVilla · 11/05/2022 17:59

Hi @manzolini , please post a photo of your pup! I absolutely live for dogs!

Whereas I ignore children and try to pretend they don’t exist (pretty hard as they are always shrieking and making a nuisance of themselves), I would be one of those annoying bints who would be chatting away to your dog.

What a load of miserable bastards on this thread! Dogs are great at cheering people
up!

NellesVilla · 11/05/2022 18:02

Also, there is a town in Surrey called Godalming but known locally as ‘Dogalming’, due to the fact that it is extremely dog-friendly. Pups are welcome in Costa, Waterstone’s, the gift shops, the ice cream shop etc. In fact the ice cream shop does dog-friendly ice cream in ‘smelly socks’ flavour!

what? Everybody? All dogs?
I honestly think, going by this thread, that some dogs owners have a vastly inflated sense of entitlement. 'Of course you love my dog. No? Well, you're a miserable bastard'.

stuntbubbles · 11/05/2022 18:04

I’ve always known it as Godawfulming

feraldiggy · 11/05/2022 18:07

This thread has made me more determined to make sure I do take my dog everywhere. My baby, my puppy, my little ray of sunshine. And I'll even make sure he has a ludicrous outfit on. It will give the miseries something to gorp at Grin

NellesVilla · 11/05/2022 18:13

I know, @feraldiggy, I feel the same. My dog is basically my other half as she’s more welcome in my bed than any human! They really are the best- I fall in love with basically each one I meet, particularly small, feisty ones! 🐶

Labscollie · 11/05/2022 18:14

JenniferWooley · 11/05/2022 13:48

I'm the same. I don't have a dog & one of the reasons is that I can't stand dog hair & slobber on my clothes so I wouldn't be best pleased to pick something up in my local matalan to find a dog had slobbered/left hair all over it.

And before you start with the but she's just a puppy & will be in a sling so nowhere near the clothes where does it stop - when the guy with his massive slobbering boxer starts complaining that they've let the puppy in & really a dogs a dog! If they let your cute little puppy in then they also have to let the big mangy mutts in which is why most places have a no dogs except guide dogs policy.

Well aren't you charming.

NellesVilla · 11/05/2022 18:15

@stuntbubbles, that’s a good one, but why is it so poorly regarded, other than the ridiculous property prices?

This...all of it 😂

caringcarer · 11/05/2022 18:19

Not good to have dogs in shops with food and clothing. Leave it at home. Why do you have a puppy younger than 12 weeks anyway?

whynotwhatknot · 11/05/2022 18:20

I see you havent replied to the numerous posts saying please dont tie up your dog outside shops

MiseryWIthAStent · 11/05/2022 18:24

I love dogs and would love to get one but my son l's asthma is really triggered by dogs and cats in close proximity. We can't even book holiday accommodation where they allow dogs as it triggers asthma attacks. So I wouldn't.

Please make sure you refer to him as your furbaby at every opportunity and if anyone says something reply with 'do not speak to me or my son again' 😂Seeing doggos (oh yes I went there) is one of life's simple joys.
