Is Starmer seriously going to resign???

Swayingpalmtrees · 10/05/2022 09:51

I have been waiting for a thread to come up about this, but I can't see one to date. I can't believe Keir Starmer has now said he will resign (and Angela Rayner as well) Potentially leaving the Labour party with no leader at all!

Looking at the 'evidence' that is well known and has been published, it appears the Indian takeaway was pre ordered (due to its size) and pre planned according to the staff at the Indian and the leaked memo, it did include quite a number of people and bottles of beer etc and drinking. It was late into the night, so not work related, and no one is suggesting anyone continued to work afterwards as it was so late. I don't see how this is any different to the No10 arrangements! So how on earth will they avoid a fine??

Sir Keir's speech was so wobbly I actually thought he was resigning there and then, and although I appreciate the sentiments of integrity and honour, where on earth does that leave the LP with under two years to the election or less?

Who would replace him? Do we have any thoughts on a plan of any kind?

I am kind of aghast, we are in the middle of a European war, on the cusp of potentially WW3, I am not sure this is a responsible action given the seriousness of our predicament with Russia whom are threatening us on a weekly basis with nuclear war. At the very very least, we need a firm hand on the tiller, so to speak, we do not have time to be squabbling over beer and cheese.

They have to be fined, its no different than party gate! it doesn't make any difference whether they worked after or not, NHS were working after eating (no beer allowed unfortunately or we would be struck off) but we weren't allowed to even share food, only 2 people per table in the canteen so that you were 2m apart (ignore the fact that you could have been side by side with your colleague 5 minutes before holding a patient up🤦) staff rooms/offices had numbers on each door of amount of people allowed in at any one time (3 on ours for at least 100 staff!!) most of the time we had to eat outdoors to not fall foul of the rules and get told off...... Whatever the weather!

In April 2021 that was down to the NHS bosses, not any laws. Just because one workplace decides to put rules in for it’s workers doesn’t mean another workplace has to.

Chuck2015 · 12/05/2022 00:39

Of course people work late and have a beer sometimes. I used to direct shows for TV, it was pretty standard to finish as late at 9pm and then meet to discuss the next days schedule over a meal and beer or two. It’s pretty normal in industries where the hours are long but I predict another Tory mole with this post tbh

OP, are we going to see similar indignation from you about the hypocrisy of Tory MP Lee Anderson?

We have already seen similar, with plenty of coverage and commentary on partygate. That is exactly why it's Labourites, who are the hypocrites.

Again - we don't know what the outcome will be - although I suspect that the mere fact of an investigation will be enough for the Tory media to spin a narrative around. It's all a race to the bottom really isn't it? It's not "we're better than you" as far as the Tories are concerned - it's more like "you're as bad us".

cavalier · 12/05/2022 08:59

I hope so … but who’s the alternative ? Oh yeah .. Rayner .. 😂 busted flush sadly

I'm not quite sure what mental contortions you have gone through to reach your conclusions, but they're spectacular. Commenting that Lee Anderson's comments on food banks are unacceptable is hypocritical how exactly?

The hypocrisy is in the Tory fans on here who are spinning a load of sleaze about Keir Starmer while one of their own dismisses the cost of living crisis in the most crass of ways - and he isn't the only one either. Tories - no standards, no empathy, no decency.

I agree. We’re well versed in spotting spin to elevate someone’s position but we’re not as adapt at spotting someone dragging people down to their level to normalise their indiscretions. It’s very trumponian.

SleeplessInEngland · 12/05/2022 10:17

The Met has just announced it's issued 100 fines so far for Partygate - over double what had previously been disclosed. That makes Downing Street officially one of, if not the biggest, rule-breaking venues in throughout the pandemic.

SleeplessInEngland · 12/05/2022 10:20

But of course, Labour's working dinner is somehow just as bad, so it's fine to dismiss all politicians as the same, because nuance and degrees are a hassle to contemplate.

Have you actually read what he said? How on earth do you contend that it is covered by news and comments on partygate?

pointythings · 12/05/2022 13:17

I just wish all these Tory apologists would come right out with it and admit that they don't give a shit about poor people, they don't give a shit about how their fave political party break the law, they don't give a shit about anyone but themselves. Would make life so much easier.

That wasn’t even all NHS trusts - around the time of beergate (so May 2021, when numbers were down) we had a virtual conference-watching session. 15-20 consultants in a seminar room, watching a livestream of a virtual conference, between 6-9pm, with pizza. Cleared with the trust Silver Control as ok to go ahead as within rules and necessary for work.

We also had a summer outdoor picnic one weekend with alcohol, in the local park. Half the department went. The doctors mess held a summer ball (no idea of numbers as I’m not a junior doctor, but it was approved). Christmas party in a pub December just gone. All legal at the time they went ahead.

None of that was happening in April 2020, during the first lockdown, when Boris’s karaoke party, leaving party, birthday party, and bring your own bottle and smash up a child’s swing party were happening. Entirely different risk profile, case numbers and legal situation.

Stolengoat · 13/05/2022 01:03

By saying he is going to resign if fined, Starmer has politicised the police and put them in an awkward situation. To me it's a despicable move, he's now worse than Johnson.

But when Boris Johnson said that the Commons Committee should wait for the results of the police investigation into ‘Partygate’, before deciding whether to investigate if he had misled Parliament, that wasn’t politicising the police?

No?

What on earth has happened to Tory voters these days? 😂

Nonsense. The police are really not going to be influenced by whether a politician might have to resign if they take action. It's not as if politicians haven't been in the dock before, after all.

If Starmer had refused to answer all those questions about what he would do if fined, I bet you'd have been telling us that was despicable.

And do you think it's just possible that the Mail were politicising the police when they made all that massive fuss about reopening the investigation?

Notonthestairs · 13/05/2022 08:30

"The Ministerial Code should be read against the background of the overarching duty on Ministers to comply with the law and to protect the integrity of public life."

I'm old enough to remember that it's quite standard and usual for Ministers to resign if they break the law.

The police have had to investigate and prosecute 100's of politicians knowing full well that politician will be expected to resign.

SleeplessInEngland · 13/05/2022 11:12

New YouGov polling shows Labour has jumped 2 point and the tories are down 2. So the tory strategy of trying to make Starmer look just as bad as Johnson has backfired.
