Is Starmer seriously going to resign???

Swayingpalmtrees · 10/05/2022 09:51

I have been waiting for a thread to come up about this, but I can't see one to date. I can't believe Keir Starmer has now said he will resign (and Angela Rayner as well) Potentially leaving the Labour party with no leader at all!

Looking at the 'evidence' that is well known and has been published, it appears the Indian takeaway was pre ordered (due to its size) and pre planned according to the staff at the Indian and the leaked memo, it did include quite a number of people and bottles of beer etc and drinking. It was late into the night, so not work related, and no one is suggesting anyone continued to work afterwards as it was so late. I don't see how this is any different to the No10 arrangements! So how on earth will they avoid a fine??

Sir Keir's speech was so wobbly I actually thought he was resigning there and then, and although I appreciate the sentiments of integrity and honour, where on earth does that leave the LP with under two years to the election or less?

Who would replace him? Do we have any thoughts on a plan of any kind?

I am kind of aghast, we are in the middle of a European war, on the cusp of potentially WW3, I am not sure this is a responsible action given the seriousness of our predicament with Russia whom are threatening us on a weekly basis with nuclear war. At the very very least, we need a firm hand on the tiller, so to speak, we do not have time to be squabbling over beer and cheese.

Please do tell us which law firm in the city you work in (I hope it isn't mine).

Swayingpalmtrees · 10/05/2022 14:31

the latter at all times of the day and night when travelling, but I would never call it working

Unless you are drinking beer and having dinner with 20-30 other people in a pandemic and suddenly a few WA messages are redesigned to be working hard, and needn't even include the person being interviewed by the police.

I don’t really see why it matters whether they carried on working after the food/beer. Although I suppose it looks better if they did. But if they were away from home, why shouldn’t they stop work and eat where they were. They didn’t have many options. The hotel doing room service has been suggested on the other thread but I can see how that would be an unattractive option for a number of reasons. I don’t think it boils down to whether they carried on working, given the circumstances.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 10/05/2022 14:22

So you never drink with food? Stand up to stretch your legs? Take longer than 5 mins to eat? How very strange. What a draconian place to work.

As we know from this thread, OP had a salad and a coke sat in the sunshine for lunch today, while claiming to work in a place that barely gives you time for a pee and makes you eat sandwiches at your desk. She also manages to spend an inordinate amount of time posting on MN.

Comefromaway · 10/05/2022 14:32

At that particular time there was NO laws against gatherings for any kind of work purposes, and colleagues were allowed to eat and drink together whilst working in a work place. There were no differences between a sandwich and a curry, a glass of water and a beer. Staff canteens and eating areas were allowed to be open, takeaways were allowed to be ordered in.

Is that clear OP?

Abhannmor · 10/05/2022 14:33

H. H. Asquith resigned during WW1. Neville Chamberlain resigned during WW2. Britain is not at war anyway.

noblegiraffe · 10/05/2022 14:33

If Durham police are in the pocket of Labour, why did they let Cummings off?

Swayingpalmtrees · 10/05/2022 14:34

I am supposed to be working, I am trying to but you keep distracting me noble

Yes but spending 4 and a half hours on Mumsnet with only a short break for a salad on company time isn't a crime is it ? Wink

Swayingpalmtrees · 10/05/2022 14:37

Ah Noble, Cummings is a paid up member of the Labour party - how can you not know that?

Indeed it is thanks to good old Cummings that we are even all here today with party gate galore. He hoped it would sink the F in No10 once and for all. Sadly it didn't work but it does look like he is going to take down Starm so not all is lost.

I am personally waiting for the next instalment, unless he has used up his arsenal and is relying on a few moles in the civil service to take down Johnson which won't be as easy. He has thrown everything at it, to his eternal credit. No one can accuse the man of not trying...

I don't work for MI5 (yet) so as far as I am aware no one is watching me - I guess you are hoping I will be snuffed out by some jobs worth.

Ooooh, it's all noble's fault that OP keeps posting! She's so compelling!
Come off it.

You misunderstand, we WANT you to keep posting. I haven’t enjoyed MN this thoroughly in yonks.

What’s your feeling on him not wearing a jacket and tie in the photo? Clearly that’s a party vibe!

Swayingpalmtrees · 10/05/2022 14:42

I actually Noble has put a call in, because someone is circling! 🤔

A close friend of Dominic Cummings has claimed he “wouldn’t put it past” Boris Johnson’s former chief adviser to go and work for the Labour party.

Speaking on LBC, James Fletcher said: “You can’t tempt him with a lot of the temptations that people in Westminster fall into line to protect. I honestly imagine he’ll go back to his study – he’ll carry on studying, which is his past-time. Things will come along, they may or may not, but he isn’t propelled by the same desires as other people, which does strike at the core of who he is.

but on the fairly regular occasions that I am, I’m glad to be able to have a beer with a curry on the companies dollar

Well at the time you would have had a police caution and a fine if you had enjoyed said evening with 20-30 other people unless you have a hot line to Joy that is.

I’ve remembered that we DID do this! We were away for work (allowed) and as we were a bubble, we were allowed (by our hotel) to go into a meeting room after a days work to eat and have a drink. I had wine. No fines instigated, investigated or handed out.

I’d totally forgotten that we did this!

Comefromaway · 10/05/2022 14:47

I booked hotels for some of our workers who were working away. The hotel they were staying at were serving breakfasts but otherwise their kitchens were closed and they too were allowed to use the hotel lounge to order a takeaway and a few beers in to eat.

pointythings · 10/05/2022 14:50

OP, you do know that someone suggesting Dom Cummings might be persuaded to work for the LP does not mean he actually is, which is what you categorically said? I'm tempted to suggest this thread is becoming more and more unhinged, but I don't think it was ever hinged in the first place.

The top 12 candidates to replace Starmer if he resigns according to Bookmakers are:

  1. Andy Burnham
  2. Wes Streeting
  3. Rachel Reeves
  4. Lisa Nandy
  5. Angela Rayner
  6. Yvette Cooper
  7. Bridget Phillipson
  8. Sadiq Khan
  9. Rosena Allin-Khan
  10. Jess Phillips
  11. Dan Jarvis
  12. Louise Haigh
The overall problem with this list is that you don't get very far down it before the first question becomes "who?". If Starmer resigns, then surely Rayner should do likewise. Burnham and Khan are not current MPs - which is not totally incompatible with becoming Labour leader, but they can't become leader of the opposition. Only Burnham, Khan and Cooper have served in government before, and my general feeling about the candidates is inexperienced.

Of the top six, I think Lisa Nandy is the most impressive and has good political instincts. Andy Burnham is a master of flip flopping and changing his mind to whichever way the wind is blowing. Wes Streeting is not leadership material, but can debate one issue at a time quite well. I can't put my finger on exactly why Rachel Reeves gives me the creeps but she could turn out to be the Labour equivalent of Nadine Dorries. Yvette Cooper ticks a lot of boxes and would at least be better than the last four leaders. Of the rest, Dan Jarvis would be an excellent deputy leader or leader after next, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if the impressive Louise Haigh eclipses them all with more experience.

For the purpose of an entertaining PMQ's, I'd like to see Emily Thornberry in the top job. She excellent at thinking on her feet, she's sharp as a tack, uses words like a scalpel and would eviscerate Johnson. And he seems not to like being called to account by women, it appears to make him rather cross.

I don't think she'd be good when it comes to winning elections though, and she'll be forever haunted by the white van pic from Rochester that she tweeted and the subsequent snobbery accusations.

I find Wes Streeting profoundly irritating for some reason. He has an air of over-eager prefect about him, but he's undoubtedly able.

Dan Jarvis is very able too, but I fear would not get grassroots support because of his support for the bombing in Syria. I agree with you re Louise Haigh - she's definitely one to watch.
