Is Starmer seriously going to resign???

Swayingpalmtrees · 10/05/2022 09:51

I have been waiting for a thread to come up about this, but I can't see one to date. I can't believe Keir Starmer has now said he will resign (and Angela Rayner as well) Potentially leaving the Labour party with no leader at all!

Looking at the 'evidence' that is well known and has been published, it appears the Indian takeaway was pre ordered (due to its size) and pre planned according to the staff at the Indian and the leaked memo, it did include quite a number of people and bottles of beer etc and drinking. It was late into the night, so not work related, and no one is suggesting anyone continued to work afterwards as it was so late. I don't see how this is any different to the No10 arrangements! So how on earth will they avoid a fine??

Sir Keir's speech was so wobbly I actually thought he was resigning there and then, and although I appreciate the sentiments of integrity and honour, where on earth does that leave the LP with under two years to the election or less?

Who would replace him? Do we have any thoughts on a plan of any kind?

I am kind of aghast, we are in the middle of a European war, on the cusp of potentially WW3, I am not sure this is a responsible action given the seriousness of our predicament with Russia whom are threatening us on a weekly basis with nuclear war. At the very very least, we need a firm hand on the tiller, so to speak, we do not have time to be squabbling over beer and cheese.

The top 12 candidates to replace Starmer if he resigns according to Bookmakers are:

  1. Andy Burnham
  2. Wes Streeting
  3. Rachel Reeves
  4. Lisa Nandy
  5. Angela Rayner
  6. Yvette Cooper
  7. Bridget Phillipson
  8. Sadiq Khan
  9. Rosena Allin-Khan
  10. Jess Phillips
  11. Dan Jarvis
  12. Louise Haigh
The overall problem with this list is that you don't get very far down it before the first question becomes "who?". If Starmer resigns, then surely Rayner should do likewise. Burnham and Khan are not current MPs - which is not totally incompatible with becoming Labour leader, but they can't become leader of the opposition. Only Burnham, Khan and Cooper have served in government before, and my general feeling about the candidates is inexperienced.

Of the top six, I think Lisa Nandy is the most impressive and has good political instincts. Andy Burnham is a master of flip flopping and changing his mind to whichever way the wind is blowing. Wes Streeting is not leadership material, but can debate one issue at a time quite well. I can't put my finger on exactly why Rachel Reeves gives me the creeps but she could turn out to be the Labour equivalent of Nadine Dorries. Yvette Cooper ticks a lot of boxes and would at least be better than the last four leaders. Of the rest, Dan Jarvis would be an excellent deputy leader or leader after next, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if the impressive Louise Haigh eclipses them all with more experience.

There are still no links whatsoever to produce all of this LP evidence that they were slaving away to 1am....

Noted.

As I set out earlier, they will be on separate itinerary sheets, so that each part of the day is only seen by the people involved, for security reasons. Whoever leaked the one that’s been publicised was probably part of the staff at wherever the event was held, as they obviously only had that one sheet. The police will no doubt be able to ask for the rest.

Swayingpalmtrees · 10/05/2022 14:10

I believe Carrie played Abba as Dominic Cummings left No10

I wonder what Ange will play when Starm leaves his office?

Any suggestions?

Just two aides were working on editing in fact to 1am

Yeah that struck me as the main point coming out of that article

Coming to the conclusion theres something not quite right about this thread and specifically the op. It’s almost a carbon copy of the the DMs stance and has all the same nuances and spins. I also doubt that the op wishes BJ had resigned or is a floating voter, s/he is just saying that, and I also doubt that you’re an old MN poster who’s name changed.

I think you’re an employee of the DM or CCHQ, who’s come here to whip things up and generally go round in circles, oblivious to the many rational points that have been made, with the specific intention of deflecting attention away from Johnson as he’s actually in a really tight spot right now.

Thats what I think, op and I’m not the only one to think that I’m sure.

Two aides slaving over a bit of editing is hardly going to be enough... keating

Well I don't know what the threshold is. If some of the higher ups checked their email on their phone would that count?

I remember liking Dan Jarvis for some reason as an option but he declined to go for it iirc, can’t recall which year that was.

As much as I don’t think Starmer should resign I probably would get used to his replacement if he is fined and goes

underwhelming man that can't even recognise what a woman is despite being married and having a daughter.
Ohhhh, you’re one of those. Still, new ammunition for your scattershot approach, I suppose. So, so far you’ve got:

London
Standing
Smiling
Sauntering
Obesity crisis
Expensive takeaway
Emails at 1am don’t count
Trans issues
Offering to resign
Relocating his place of work after a meal

Have I missed any of his crimes?

Ah lonely You are crediting me again with this stuff. I have actually never read the DM and prefer the Times these days. I sometimes read the Guardian and have been known to read the Economist. I can see you are trying to discredit me, and I don't think it is on actually. I have a right to my opinion, even if you don't agree with it.

I agree able that we have a war raging in Europe, having a coherent opposition party is incredibly important at the moment. Starmer may not be PM but the opposition are expected to partake in many decisions made across all parties to do with security etc.

I think there is a very real chance of a fine actually.

There are photos of the people drinking inside, there is evidence of Indian food to the tune of 200gbp being pre ordered, so clearly for a large gathering at least. How would the police not fine for this? The memo concludes the party was organised in advance, they were drinking and there are photos to support.

I am wondering how the police can come to any other conclusion given the rules at the time?

Labour is not a coherent opposition party . Kier Starmers leadership makes no difference to any part of anything.

Swayingpalmtrees · 10/05/2022 14:20

Ermmm is anyone else looking at that list and wondering how ANY of them will take on Boris Johnson in the elections?

Come on, Lisa Nandy! Perhaps more suited to being a dinner lady. Cooper would have been a great option, but she has already pulled out and who else could possibly win?!

None of them stand a cats hell chance do they....Be realistic.

We need big hitters not the Z team of stragglers a mash up of Corbyn supporters and old Labour. It depresses me looking at that list. Is that the best our country can come up with???

Op on here they will always justify it as ok or not as bad as xyz , the reality js , they never needed to meet in large numbers like that or have beers however you look at it , most of is were still even avoiding the office and having teams meetings etc still

They were on the campaign trail a few days before local elections, away from home! You can hardly do that on teams.

Eating requires five minutes out of your working day.

Beer swilling in a group is somewhat different....

So you never drink with food? Stand up to stretch your legs? Take longer than 5 mins to eat? How very strange. What a draconian place to work.

Not at 10pm, no, I am usually asleep.

To be fair, I’d rather not be at work at that time but on the fairly regular occasions that I am, I’m glad to be able to have a beer with a curry on the companies dollar.

Well at the time you would have had a police caution and a fine if you had enjoyed said evening with 20-30 other people unless you have a hot line to Joy that is.

Actually working or sending the odd WhatsApp message to colleagues? I frequently do (and receive) the latter at all times of the day and night when travelling, but I would never call it working.

Why is Angela Rayner on the list when she has said she will resign too?

Because they can't decide if she was there or not.
