to not want to go on holiday ever again

Anyone else just not bothered about going on holiday and would rather be home?

Just wondering if how many others feel the same way. I'm just not bothered and even find it a hassle. I could not care less if I was never to go abroad again in my life. I do like weekends away but anything longer I just want to be home again.

What’s meds does the dr give you? I have crippling anxiety and haven’t left the country for 15 years!! Do they just knock you out?

Crikeyalmighty · 09/05/2022 21:14

I'm quite suprised when people talk about hassle involved in booking do your jobs not have admin and stuff -- holidays to me are enjoyable admin!! I've booked full band tours and the bit I most enjoy are hotel bookings for 10 plus complicated itineraries

I travelled so much when I was younger and lived abroad too. I cannot stand travelling now. I am terrified of flying now, but GP gives me good meds to get through it. My DP has recently announced that he is also terrified of flying and will never do it again, not even with meds. I'll still go with our DCs because they should have the experiences I was lucky enough to have when I was their age. Upside of DP staying behind, he can look after the pets.I guess I'm happy enough when I get to destination. But I hate all the prep and packing. Not very good in the heat either. Bah humbug.

Just realized I didn’t respond to your comment and added to the thread 🙄 what meds does the dr give you? How do they make you feel?

Sandinyourshoes · 09/05/2022 21:29

I had a disastrous holiday years ago and its put me off ever going abroad again - felt unwell at airport, flight times changed as usual, we arrived at our apartment at 6 am and had to find our keys, though some had instructions where they were, we hadn’t.
The apartment was filthy, strange insects in unexpected places, no water supply some days, flushing the toilet with water from the swimming pool, lugging heavy bottles of water uphill to the apartment in the heat of the day. Dubious electrics.
The resort which was restful and quiet when we visited it a few years before, (and had a great time snorkelling) was now frantically busy.
I also don’t cope well with heat and humidity anymore, another bonus of getting old. I’m quite content to never leave these shores again.

I haven't been on holiday anywhere for about 26 years when my DD was four and my DS was a baby. I have never had a holiday abroad, just a couple of day trips to France in my teens. Even when the children were small we only went on three or four night breaks in this country. I just prefer to be at home.

Why?

MaryShelley1818 · 09/05/2022 21:39

I absolutely love holidays....literally live for them. I have a 4yr old and a 1yr old and find holidays with them absolutely delightful.
We're off to France for a week on Saturday and I'm so excited 😊 Will be DS's 5th time abroad (would have had a few more if it wasn't for Covid!) and DDs 2nd. We're also off to Spain in August.

I've travelled all over the world and the children will too although we haven't gone too far while their babies.
I have a huge bucket list to visit in the next 10yrs.

exaltedwombat · 09/05/2022 21:43

I went on a holiday once. Must have been about 1972. Haven't felt the need to repeat the experience.

5foot5 · 09/05/2022 21:47

@noborisno
Is being anxious a mental health issue? Doesn't everyone get anxious sometimes?

Absolutely yes. What refreshing common sense, though we might get pilloried for this view.

I do actually like going on holiday but I am a planner and a list maker and only really relax when we are there and all has gone well. But in general I agree that occasionally being anxious about things is just a fact of life.

However, you said
I'm 42, but just feel done now. Just done with going on holiday and just want to enjoy my home and my life.
and it seems to me that 42 is awfully young to be pulling up the drawbridge on the rest of the world.

I will be 60 in a few weeks and DH is 64 and we recently retired and it seems like now is a great time to do all those holidays we always fancied. We have as much free time as we need, funds are OK and we are both reasonably fit and healthy. It seems daftnot to take advantage of that.

lioncitygirl · 09/05/2022 21:51

I travel a lot - both for work and holiday. I travelled as soon as restrictions eased last august for work - I’m away every 4-6 weeks. My family also live abroad so we try to visit them.

I quite like holidays - currently we are planning to go away in May, then July and Christmas. To each their own though - and YANBU with how you feel.

why is that?!

you’re really missing out!

How can anyone not want to go abroad?

I’m not being goady, genuinely curious.

Its about getting to see the world, broaden your horizons and your mind, see other cultures and how life functions in different parts of the world, you get to experience different climate, landscapes, food etc, a complete change of scene and break away from the norm, do once in a life time activities like swim with dolphins, etc etc

It’s fabulous!!

Honestly I can’t see how that cannot appeal! Unless you have little kids i can understand but otherwise why wouldn’t you love that? As I say, I’m just so curious about this

I live 'abroad' and we have decent summers so wouldn't mind not leaving my country of residence again.

My question to you would be, how can anyone be so short-sighted that they don't know others might have different needs that render 'home comforts' more important?

I'm in pain all the time and 'home comforts' make it bearable. I have put a lot of effort into making my home right for me. My bed is very firm. A soft bed makes my back worse. A small bed will give me more pain due to lack of space. I have an L-shaped couch which means I can sit in the position that is best for my back, hip and ankle, or lie down. Stuff is organised so I have to bend as little as possible. Stairs are tough so I need a loo on each floor. How can I guarantee my holiday home/hotel has all the things I need? That's before I think about the actual travel which is nigh-on impossible anyway since I can't sit for more than 30 minutes...

AllLopsided · 09/05/2022 22:17

I should probably add that in the past I've travelled extensively and really enjoyed it (totally with you about that first blast of tropical air). It's just that right now the pain definitely outweighs the pleasure.

well yeah I totally get that! Anyone could understand why home comforts world be more salient in that scenario….

…but I don’t think all these posters who are harping on about missing home comforts suffer from chronic back injury/pain….Though I could be wrong!

TinselTinsel · 09/05/2022 22:28

I love going abroad for the guaranteed sun. I do also holiday in the UK but I find it harder to pack for Uk holidays because of the flipping weather! Plus I'd rather do a 2 hour flight the 5-6 hours in the car.

Fair enough!

exaltedwombat · 09/05/2022 22:53

@LuckySantangelo35 Oh, I've been places for work, in the UK and abroad. And enjoyed a day's sightseeing. But a WHOLE WEEK with nothing to do? I can have that at home, for free!

@exaltedwombat

why would you have nothing to do on holiday?! Go to Asia, or the Caribbean, or Slovenia - there’s tons to do!

im not into the whole ‘plonk yourself on a beach for a fortnight in an all inclusive’ vibe either (though totally understand why that would be appealing with little kids)

p.s out of interest, my work has never really had travel involved. I would have loved it tough! What do you do?

RelativePitch · 09/05/2022 23:09

@Mrsbrooks1 diazepam. The GP started me off on beta blockers in my early fear of flying days and it helped to a point, lots of people have great success with beta blockers. I preferred to be pretty much knocked out which diazepam achieves, but I can be stirred at the other end of the flight.

Mummadeze · 10/05/2022 06:37

I live for holidays. I don’t think I could bear working full time without holidays to look forward to. I also spend hours planning holidays I may never even go on for the enjoyment of planning itineraries!

Dammitthisisshit · 10/05/2022 07:21

I love holidays. Unfortunately can’t have any at the moment due to illness. It’s great to explore somewhere new. I’ve been lucky enough to travel with work in the past to lots of different countries and it’s been great, but you get very little down time to explore and no freedom on where you stay (which is fair enough, it’s work!) so it’s not the same as a holiday where you choose. I used to be very snobby about all-inclusives and those that don’t bother to see a country when there but I got over that and love a good all inclusive now! It’s a different type of holiday but I love the down time.
personally I like quiet places though, not hoards of people.
my favourite sound in the world is the gentle lapping of waves interlaced with the crinkle of coconut palms in a gentle breeze. Aaaaaaah……

I have never had a holiday abroad with nothing to do. Even in the main European resorts there is loads to do. Costa del Sol? Malaga is a fab city, architecture, history, food, galleries and a cheap train journey from the nearby resorts. Slightly further afield there is Ronda, Seville and Granada. Costa Brava? Barcelona, another brilliant city. Mallorca? Palma has a beautiful cathedral, houses you can visit that were owned by Franco's inner circle, the market has cafes that serve food straight from the market stalls. Greece - the home of democracy - read a few greek myths and see where the main events were supposed to have taken place, visit Crete and see Knossos., home of the labyrinth and Minotaur. Spinalonga on Crete was one of the last leper colonies in Europe and is a fascinating day out, with lunch in nearby Plaka. Yes. We like a day at the pool or beach but pick your location and you will not be short of things to do. And you will learn loads about the culture and life in other parts of the world. We like to use public transport, which is usually much cheaper than in the uk.

I have been abroad 3 times this year and 4 more booked,
Life is for living.
You are a long time dead.
Love this retirement lark.

Ahgoonyegirlye · 10/05/2022 09:14

Entirely a personal choice but we went to the USA and Europe and it was lovely, and the ‘hassle’ really wasn’t that much more and deffo worth it. Away again this month and in the summer.
so lovely to have a change of scene after years of being stuck at home…

I agree that's brilliant if that's what you want to do. You're not wrong, it is young, it's just how I feel. Maybe I'll come out of it but I went to Greece in 2018 and enjoyed it but even before that, when the last time I went abroad was 2010, I loved going to America but now I just want to be home with my family instead of out meeting new people.
