to not want to go on holiday ever again

Anyone else just not bothered about going on holiday and would rather be home?

Just wondering if how many others feel the same way. I'm just not bothered and even find it a hassle. I could not care less if I was never to go abroad again in my life. I do like weekends away but anything longer I just want to be home again.

I’m with you, I bought a v cheap caravan in Dorset and that’s what we do now but I am lucky enough to have done a fair amount of travelling in my 20’s and 30’s so I do understand the urge to go away. It’s the organisation and packing I can’t stand anymore and we have a rescue dog who adds an extra layer of kerfuffle.

AnnieSnap · 09/05/2022 18:01

I love travelling, but I have to really want to go somewhere (there are several destinations that give me that). I don’t do the just going somewhere hot to lie on a beach thing. I’m off on Safari for the second time on Saturday and I couldn’t be more delighted. Maybe think about what you like and what you don’t like about holidays and book accordingly.

Herja · 09/05/2022 18:06

I dislike some aspects of holidays. I associate flying with abuse. I associate being away from home with being absolutely lost in a way that causes debilitating anxiety if I need to travel other than on foot. Crowded places cause panic attacks and seculded places are often hard on my shit hips. If I could be chauffeured about and have someone else arrange it all, tailored to my needs (essentially like a child), I'd really like holidays; as it stands though, they are more likely to make me ill than relax, even in the uk, so I don't go on them.

I could probably fix it with therapy, but 'going on holiday' seems a stupid reason to bother with that (it's horrid!), when I have no real desire to go away anyway.

RelativePitch · 09/05/2022 18:10

I travelled so much when I was younger and lived abroad too. I cannot stand travelling now. I am terrified of flying now, but GP gives me good meds to get through it. My DP has recently announced that he is also terrified of flying and will never do it again, not even with meds. I'll still go with our DCs because they should have the experiences I was lucky enough to have when I was their age. Upside of DP staying behind, he can look after the pets.I guess I'm happy enough when I get to destination. But I hate all the prep and packing. Not very good in the heat either. Bah humbug.

Why wouldn't you want to see other places ? I can't understand people who don't want to travel.
When PP say it's too much hassle - what hassle ?
Not being goady honestly just don't get it.

Packing.. what to take/not take
Visas
Sorting out airport parking/getting to airport
Queues at the airport
Whether what you have booked is actually what you get
trying to work out exchange rates in my head
So, so many other things.
Nothing about the build up to a holiday excites me enough to want to go. When I was a child we cruised back from Australia and stopped at a lot of places so I have seen a bit of the world but I'm honestly not bothered about seeing anymore of it. I do weekend city breaks in the UK but that's as far as it goes.

You see none of that feels like ‘hassle’ to me, there’s admin involved in all parts of life and it’s just a bit of admin. I have no issues deciding what to take or what not to take… clothes, underwear, swimwear and toiletries usually 🤷🏻‍♀️. If I forget anything, I’ve never been anywhere that doesn’t have a shop of some sort.

Vynalbob · 09/05/2022 18:20

Agree with OP. OH is a planner and the build up and suspense never delivers when you get there. I can see (if u can afford it) the interest in chucking stuff in a backpack and exploring somewhere interesting but otherwise no.
I find a large % of people (the top up me tan, tryst & have some beers variety) a complete waste.... People still leave England to go to the beach drink beer and eat English grub in a different country while assuming if they talk louder folk will understand them. I'm stopping home ta.

SuperBlondie28 · 09/05/2022 18:25

I'm ok once I get there generally. I hate packing. I hate long car journeys even though I'm the passenger. I hate trying to find things to entertain ourselves but I feel its wasted, just sitting around. This applies to uk and overseas holidays. I do love flying though. Probably because I didn't fly til I was 24 years old

Surely this only happens in certain types of places, which are easily avoided? I’ve never been on holiday abroad to somewhere that sells ‘English grub’, or has that sort of person visiting. I mean, if you choose to go somewhere like Benidorm then you’ll encounter it, but that’s why I don’t choose to go to places like Benidorm.

iggybop · 09/05/2022 18:27

I can’t wait to go abroad again. the weather in the UK is unreliable. The costs of everything here is astronomical.

rather go off to Europe for my holidays

Life admin is stuff I need to do, holiday admin is something that is optional so I opt not to do it. Different strokes for different folks as the saying goes.

Frazzledstar1 · 09/05/2022 18:29

Love going abroad, love the airport and flying. Love it all!

also love going away on UK breaks to the coast.

but each to their own. the in laws haven’t been on holiday since I’ve been with DP, they’re just not Bothered. So you’re not alone in those feelings

Justrestingmyeyes1 · 09/05/2022 18:36

Nope! I love holidays. We were on a plane the minute the government said we could last year and have several booked for this year.
I also love holidaying with our dogs in the UK.

Lincslady53 · 09/05/2022 19:00

I don't find and of the admin a hassle, it is all part of the fun. In 2017 we went (as z couple) to an adults only. AI hotel on Mallorca. It was lovely, everything done for us, good location, good food. We had a wonderful relaxing break. But the next year, we booked an apartment an hour from the airport, booked flights, took hand luggage only, used public transport to get to the apartment, and we enjoyed it much more than the AI option. Covid has made us a bit wary if we have to cancel, so next week we are off on a package to Portugal. We will leave a bit earlier for the airport, but really looking forward to the break. It's been a long time.

IrisVersicolor · 09/05/2022 19:12

I love holidays in theory, but with a chronic illness they’re actually gruelling.

Raizin · 09/05/2022 19:13

Personally I love going away and can't wait to experience somewhere new after all the lockdown BS.

I love my home and chilling indoors but I love travelling too.

mamabear715 · 09/05/2022 19:22

Not got a passport, never been out of the UK. Not that bothered.

fetchacloth · 09/05/2022 19:28

I like going abroad sometimes but I'm definitely staying at home until the airports sort themselves out, I really can't be doing with the stress of long queues.

BooneyBeautiful · 09/05/2022 19:36

I haven't been on holiday anywhere for about 26 years when my DD was four and my DS was a baby. I have never had a holiday abroad, just a couple of day trips to France in my teens. Even when the children were small we only went on three or four night breaks in this country. I just prefer to be at home.

Mfsf · 09/05/2022 19:46

That is so alien to me ! Why don’t you love meeting new places and cultures ? Did you have any bad experiences or are just very attached to a routine ?

CountTheStars · 09/05/2022 20:08

I used to love exploring new places, going travelling & backpacking abroad. Then I had children. Holidays with kids under the age of 4/5 aren’t holidays - they’re just extra stress somewhere unfamiliar & frustrating to boot, because you realise you’ve just exchanged one kitchen sink for another. As the children get a bit older, ( 7 & up) then I’ve started to find the fun & excitement in them again. But little ones are just as happy with day trips as they are on some exotic beach & I just felt perpetually out of my comfort zone

You've forgotten getting to the airport and getting back home again after the holiday. Unless you're lucky enough to live near an airport and have good public transport, the getting to/from the airport can also be painful, i.e. booking an airport hotel or booking airport parking/transfers etc.

We live just over 40 miles on a motorway from our nearest airport and we book parking within walking distance of the terminal. Why are some of you making such heavy weather of such simple things?

I know. Booking airport parking involves googling ‘airport parking at xxx airport’, putting your dates in and booking it. It has never taken me more than 10 mins. Hardly onerous!

Bearsan · 09/05/2022 20:21

Re parking. Meet and greet is brilliant.

Dibbydoos · 09/05/2022 20:28

You could try a cruise from UK round trip. Offset tge impact though cos its quite carbon intensive...!

We're going for a 12night jaunt around Iceland and picking up Belfast, Isle of Skye and Anglesey on the way back to Southampton.

I've also booked a week in Dorset so we can take the dogs with us.

I'm with you OP all that flying malarkey is too much hassle, though I am attending my neices wedding in Bali next Dec, I doubt I'll be taking a flight anywhere soon....
