to not want to go on holiday ever again

Anyone else just not bothered about going on holiday and would rather be home?

Just wondering if how many others feel the same way. I'm just not bothered and even find it a hassle. I could not care less if I was never to go abroad again in my life. I do like weekends away but anything longer I just want to be home again.

So I'm going to put it out there. And I fully expect to get flamed..

How does flying around the world sit with climate change amongst MN'ers?

Well it’s already been mentioned a few times on this thread, so not sure why you’d be flamed…

Flights are obviously not eco friendly but should be put in the context of the rest of a person’s life imo. I don’t use a car or a tumble dryer, don’t eat meat/dairy, I have very low energy usage etc so my annual emissions even with an annual flight are actually lower than someone who doesn’t fly but doesn’t have the same lifestyle as me. I also pay for carbon capture & storage with Climeworks which I recommend to anyone who can afford it.

I try and balence my ‘footprint’ in other ways. Recycling, only having one child, etc. So I feel zero guilt re climate change and me flying once or twice a year.

Soffit · 09/05/2022 12:31

Unless you are really clued up about offsetting your carbon footprint then it is unlikely to do anything positive other than make you feel better about what you would be doing anyway. Those short haul flights are horrendous and those stated activities would be a drop in the ocean in comparison.

I am definitely not an eco warrior but I fully own my carbon footprint instead of providing nonsense reasons to explain it away.

P0larexpress · 09/05/2022 12:36

The (few) people I know who are angst ridden about the environment are usually angst ridden about a whole other host of issues as well!

ironically they’re people who would benefit from going on holiday the most!

I can honestly say that worrying about climate change takes up absolutely
no space in my head whatsoever!
I’m too busy planning where to go on holiday next😀

tomatoandherbs · 09/05/2022 12:49

My stance this year re holidays and the environment is that…

the planet can go up in flames for how much I want to finally go on the all-singing all dancing holiday I booked three years and repeatedly reschedule - as long as it’s AFTER we get back.

EileenGC · 09/05/2022 12:50

My environmental impact is already lower than average because I don’t have children, don’t know how to drive and only ever use public transport, I’ve been vegetarian since birth, live in tiny flat with no living room which I barely need to heat up, don’t tumble dry, the list could go on.

The average mumsnetter has a child or two, lives in a 3/4 bed semi (with guest room, dining and living spaces), very rurally so they run two cars, and still eat meat and diary but all locally sourced of course. I don’t think, on MN, either side should lecture the other about carbon footprints.

I do have to laugh at all those saying ‘I used to travel the world but nowadays I’m very conscious of the environment so don’t do it anymore’. Do you mean your last flights were in the 80s/90s? I was still at school two decades ago and we definitely learnt about climate change and environmental impact. The classic shower vs bath, lights off vs on, train vs car/plane. This topic is not new, so all the sanctimonious ‘I stopped flying a few years ago when I realised what it meant’ makes no sense. We had this knowledge decades ago, it just wasn’t as trendy to pretend to care about it.

Better yet. On our last day as taxi pulling up to take us to the airport

hangrylady · 09/05/2022 12:53

YANBU to feel that way but I certainly don't. I cannot wait to go abroad this year for the first time since covid. We did have a nice time in Devon last year but the British weather can fuck off. When I'm on holiday I don't want to have to think about waterproofs and wellies!

@EileenGC

sorry if you’ve said upthread
but I can’t get from your post whether you are happy to fly or very much against it?

BrownStripePJ · 09/05/2022 12:56

I enjoy both. 2 UK holidays and 1 abroad per year suits me

newbiename · 09/05/2022 13:02

Why wouldn't you want to see other places ? I can't understand people who don't want to travel.
When PP say it's too much hassle - what hassle ?
Not being goady honestly just don't get it.

I fly several times each month. Happy to continue doing so (also necessary unless I want to lose my job).

My post was in response to @Shunter350 's question about how flying sat with MNetters.

EileenGC · 09/05/2022 13:13

NC fail but yeah, as I said.

Not sure if this was a response to me - carbon capture & storage isn’t offsetting. Offsetting is where you plant trees or get an agreement with someone else that they will forego a certain amount of emissions. CCS uses special machines to actually physically remove CO2 from the atmosphere, so unlike offsetting it’s 100% certain that you have had the desired impact and it’s also much more immediate - but for that reason it’s also a lot more expensive than offsetting.

And the other stuff really isn’t a drop in the ocean when you put it all together - I worked out on a thread on here once that a poster’s annual tumble drying alone worked out as the same emissions as a flight from London to NYC! Undoubtedly she was also using the washing machine a lot, had a car, ate meat etc and you can see how it adds up.

As if there’s a choice? They are (a) wild, and (b) a lot quicker at manoeuvres than any boat, and (c) piss off when something more interesting comes along. They come to you, you don’t go to them.

LuckySantangelo35 · 09/05/2022 15:31

All these people who have to have themselves and their kids wearing a pair of freshly washed pyjamas every single night will be having more of an adverse impact on the environment then someone flying a couple of times a year.

just cannot feel guilty about it 🤷‍♀️

MsTSwift · 09/05/2022 16:34

I love to travel and do feel guilty about it. Flying is really bad however you try and bargain it in your head. Such a bugger! We have been ferry / driving for last few abroad holidays. We will fly again but try to reduce it. Can someone not invent an eco plane ?!

HesterShaw1 · 09/05/2022 16:40

You can "be home" if you like OP. Frankly over the last couple of years I've had enough "being home" to last me a lifetime.

I can speak from a position of authority here. Dolphins come to an area for a reason - whether that's foraging, birthing, socialising or sheltering. Being hounded by boats who want to dump tourists into the water with them as close as possible, will interfere with these activities. It's not just a question of them "swimming away". Unethical boat operators (and there are more of them than ethical ones) pursue them.

Worldgonecrazy · 09/05/2022 16:54

I’m also speaking from a position of knowledge. The dolphins who come to us have a massive territory. We don’t need to chase and it would be pretty bloody pointless to even try. I think they actually recognise our boat engine noise, and know that we set up the best wakes for them to play in. I guess our experience is very different to captive or coerced dolphins, I have no experience of that so cannot comment.

This!

we have been confined to our homes so much these last couple of years due to covid. Honestly don’t get why people want to “stay home” now when they can finally get away!

Haven’t you had enough of “staying home”?!

Bearsan · 09/05/2022 17:03

We love holidays, travel, flying, airports, cruising. Been to well over 40 countries and lots more on the list.
I will holiday here more when sunshine is guaranteed. Otherwise it's just weekends, city breaks, festivals, rallies etc in the UK.
I avoid anything abroad that involves performing animals.
