To be annoyed MIL cleaned the bathroom

Clementinemist · 06/05/2022 00:14

I went to a hen party over the weekend, and DH's parents popped round for a dinner while I was away. We keep our flat very clean and tidy. Our main bathroom wasn't dirty, but could have done with a light clean; probably some of my hair in the plug/around the shower, cabinet was a bit dusty, mirror needed a polish, a bit of limescale around the taps. I've just started a new job and an evening course, been really busy, and didn't have time to give it a once over before I left. (Just to note DH does his share of housework, I usually do the bathroom).

Anyway, MIL decided to thoroughly clean the bathroom while she was here. She emptied the bin which included my used tampons/sanitary towels, possibly condoms. I'm not awkward or uncomfortable about periods/sex or anything, but that's pretty personal. I'm a bit annoyed that she took it upon herself to clean my home, it's not like it was filthy, and has gone into my bin for no reason whatsoever. AIBU?

Op this issue is always going to divide people. Some people love their mum/partners mum to come and clean, some hate it.

You clearly hate it. Just get DH to tell her not to do it again.

I wouldn’t have cleaned it but I'd have left your home very disappointed that my son and his partner were so grubby. Not how either were brought up. I'd have said something to my DS later.

Oh bless you. At least you'd never have to be so disappointed ever again. I'm sure you would never be invited again so what a lucky escape for you.

Alwayscheerful · 06/05/2022 20:10

MIL should not have cleaned your bathroom . I would love her to clean mine but I would be mortified if anyone used my bathroom whilst the bin was full.
A roll of thin white bin liners or nappy sacks is pennies . Line your bin with 10 at a time and Empty it every day, tie it up and take it down every time you leave the building . Sorry OP but The word slattern springs to mind .

Zerrin13 · 06/05/2022 20:11

I've cleaned my mil's bathroom before. She had us and other relatives staying so it was getting lots of use. She didn't ask. I just did it because I was bored shitless, also because sharing a bathroom with several other people makes me want to vomit so I wanted it to have a thorough bleaching. If she minded she didn't say.
As for bathroom bins. Just used tissues in it would get my back up so I dont have a bin in the bathroom or in any other room in the house. Rubbish is for the outside bin imo. As for putting used tampons and pads and condoms in a bin and letting it fester for days?? No wonder she rolled her sleeves up and cracked on
getting it up to a decent standard. You should be thankful! She sounds very helpful.

toomuchlaundry · 06/05/2022 20:53

If you lived 10 floors away from the nearest outside bin would you still have no bins inside the house @Zerrin13?

mathanxiety · 07/05/2022 05:46

@rosewater20 Grin you and me both.

@SaltandPeppasHere once when I was babysitting the kids locked themselves into the bathroom and decorated it comprehensively with all the toothpaste and shaving cream they could lay their hands on. So after I had finally bribed them out and got them into bed I cleaned it within an inch of its life. Maybe something like this happened in your home?

speakout · 07/05/2022 06:35

How do condoms end up in the bathroom bin? Genuine question.
Presumably they are removed in the bedroom? Don't you have a bedroom bin?
It would take as much effort to take a used condom downstairs to the main bin as to the bathroom surely? Why add the extra step of taking it from the bedroom to bathroom then main bin?

Marvellousmadness · 07/05/2022 07:33

Send her my way please ;)

Could've had sex in the bathroom maybe?

Scianel · 07/05/2022 08:37

I can imagine the back story, MIL comes around for dinner, uses the bathroom, says to her DS, I can clean the bathroom if you like, yes please mum, OP didn’t get the chance to before going away. No need for a dramatic reaction. She was trying to help

OP didn't get a chance to? Does the DS not have hands then? If I was his mother and he said that I'd be ashamed of him.

She’s 10 floors up! Personally I’d rather jizzy condoms in the bathroom bin, which I think of as a “wet” bin, than the bedroom bin which is for tissues only. Not a chance in hell that after a shag I’d put my clothes on, leave the flat and trot 10 floors down to the outside bin to dispose of the condom. Dropping it off in the bathroom bin makes sense when you’re doing your post-sex anti-cystitis wee.

This is the most I have ever thought about condom bin mechanics.

OP said they split chores and the bathroom is hers

Bloody hell, there's some weird shit on here.

Calling the OP a slattern because the bathroom needed a but of a wipe down!!!!

OP - I think YABU but I also think half the folk on mumsnet are bloody batshit.

I imagine that like most people the bathroom & bedroom bins are emptied less frequently then the main kitchen bin.
Why take a condom from the bedroom and walk to the bathroom to put it in the bin there? makes even less sense given that the OP lives in a flat- no stairs.
Surely the kitchen bin would be the place for a used condom- wher it will be emptied frequently?

Scianel · 07/05/2022 08:49

They live in the 1950s I think, constant tutting about other people's housewifing skills and eye-rolling about their lazy useless husbands.

speakout · 07/05/2022 08:51

I also don't get the concept of a "wet bin". Is that the place for baby's nappies too then? A bin that gets emptied once a week?
Smelly stuff like that goes in the bin that is emptied most frequently surely?
In my case that would be the kitchen bin- it gets emptied daily. I don't want stinky stuff lingering in the house for a week.

Nothing to do with the bathroom ending a wipedown!
Condoms and old tampons or sanitary towels need bagging and removing.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 07/05/2022 08:58

We empty the bathroom bin once a week. It has a bag and a lid.

girlmom21 · 07/05/2022 09:00

She's being called a slattern because the used sanitary products were at least 3 days old and used condoms were at least 5...

toomuchlaundry · 07/05/2022 09:10

@speakout we don't empty the kitchen bin daily. Do you use a clean bin liner every day?

BusyMum47 · 07/05/2022 09:21

@Clementinemist My 1st thought when I read the heading was, "Ooh, I'd be bloody thrilled if my MIL did a spot of cleaning!" But then I read your post. Wow. She was SO intrusive. Why on earth did she feel the need to do it, having only come round for a meal?? She wouldn't have done it if you were there, would she? As for rummaging around INSIDE the cabinet & throwing products away...downright rude. I'd be pretty pissed off, too.

(BTW Ignore all the judgy crap about how often you empty your bin...so not the point of your post!)

So what? In the real, non-MN world, emptying a bin once a week is considered normal.

It depends what's in the bin, surely?

I would happily leave, say, paper or empty cardboard boxes in a bin for weeks, but not things like food or dirty sanitary products - surely the smell would be awful after a week?

But OP's husband was there and would presumably have spoken up if he wasn't happy with what his mum was doing?

It's not like she let herself in and did it in secret - her son was around and perfectly capable of saying "mum, please don't do that" if he was uncomfortable.

stuntbubbles · 07/05/2022 09:39

@speakout Every woman I know goes for a post-sex wee. Makes sense to drop the condom off in the bathroom bin while you’re there. If anything, the kitchen bin is more of a “public-facing” bin. And there’s no loo in there.
