"Would you mind stopping that now, please" Was I rude?

Lying down with eyes shut on gigantic upcycled bench made of pallets and astroturf.

2 kids ages about 8 jumping off backrest of bench onto seat about 20-30cm from my feet. Their mother was sitting in the bench about another metre from that (the bench is 5m long). They did it about 10 times each and each time they landed by my feet they made the bench vibrate. I then asked them if they could possibly stop doing it.

Their mother told me I was very rude and said I should move to an empty deckchair.
I told her I needed to lie down. She then told her kids to keep jumping.

Was I being rude? Or was she?

allalila · 05/05/2022 19:13

Omg. She was very rude. I'm sorry that happened to you OP, it must have felt horrible

DangerouslyBored · 05/05/2022 19:14

Obviously the woman and her feral kids were BU.

Alcibiade · 05/05/2022 19:14

She was being very rude. You were not.

RealBecca · 05/05/2022 19:15

Was there an empty deckchairs?

IggyAce · 05/05/2022 19:15

She was definitely rude and her kids will be complete nightmares, I feel for their teachers.

VincaBlue · 05/05/2022 19:17

If they were in your back garden then fair enough to tell them to pack it in.
If you were in a public place then ywbu.
Not really the place for a nap is it?

Loopytiles · 05/05/2022 19:20

She was rude!

DawsonsUglyCryingFace · 05/05/2022 19:22

Why were you lying down having a nap in a public place?! Seems a bit bizarre.

Topgub · 05/05/2022 19:22

Why did you need to lie down?!

Was this in a park? Were you lying down on play equipment?

I think you were unreasonable to ask kids not to play in a public space

Aquamarine1029 · 05/05/2022 19:22

It's no wonder there are so many arsehole young people about. They aren't taught manners and respect.

Georgeskitchen · 05/05/2022 19:23

She was rude. Should of told her brats to pack it in. No wonder there's there's many badly behaved offspring these days, parents bloody encouraging their behaviour!!

I have long covid.

It is not a children's play area.

Who was there first?

ecnatsid · 05/05/2022 19:25

Idk, maybe go home to lie down? Kids are kids

Neverreturntoathread · 05/05/2022 19:25

She was very rude. Some people are jerks. They tend to raise their kids to be jerks too. When in public, they are usually found encouraging their kids to go jump all over some other family while the parent enjoys lots of quiet space elsewhere and plays on her phone (I say her because jerk mums are usually at least present, jerk dads don’t even turn up).

Here, an adult gave a reasonable and polite request to her children and the mother told them to ignore it and continue harassing that adult. Those kids are gonna be bullies at school and later to their wives :(

madroid1 · 05/05/2022 19:25

Just the fact it was an adult asking (with possibly serious reasons) should have trumped the dc's (in any case inconsiderate) behaviour.

That woman will reap what she's sowing when her dc ignore her. She's teaching them to be selfish and inconsiderate of others, never mind disrespectful to adults. V poor parenting.

There's parks for kids to play in. If there was a pregnant lady, disabled individuals or elderly people sitting or lying on the bench would your opinion change? Seating areas are not for playing.

Floralnomad · 05/05/2022 19:27

She was a bit rude but I don’t think you should have said anything in the first place as you were lying in a public place

filo443 · 05/05/2022 19:27

Depends on context really, were you in a park? Did they have other things to play on? why are you lying down in a public space? You don't own a massive bench, so it's a bit unusual to expect others not to use it surely. Children will always play so more info required.

NumberTheory · 05/05/2022 19:28

I don't see that using an "upcycled" bench to jump off is any more or less reasonable than using it as a bed. If kids were there first then YWBU. If your were there first then other woman WBU. My opinion might change if I saw the area and it seemed like it was, in some way, supposed to be a quiet rest area or was supposed to be for exploring/interacting with.
