Meat eater benefits from sharing finances with veggie

Ah, this is an issue we come back to time and time again (well every year or so I guess).

I'm vegetarian and as such my food is generally less expensive. My DH eats meat. No problem with that as such, but he hasn't cut down the amount of meat he eats, if anything he eats more now. Today he had bacon medallions with breakfast, a tin of tuna with lunch and plans to have an expensive individually wrapped chicken breast with dinner. These cost about £2.25 per breast and sometimes he has two.

His Pov: I can eat what I like.

My Pov: Yes, but... Food comes out of "joint money", and we are spending too much. I am trying to cut back like I bought the cheaper bread to save 60p. If I suddenly decided to eat meat (not going to happen) but we wouldn't be able to afford it. Basically he can only afford to eat meat the way he does because I have a much cheaper diet....

What is the answer? No kids btw

@Amoozbooze . I know, it's amazing. The OP's husband is spending almost all their food money so she's practically living on carrots and lentils and HE doesn't want to spend less or increase the food budget. Yet she's the unreasonable one, apparently!

Is she still being unreasonable when she ends up having to go to the food bank because her diet isn't giving her adequate nutrition?

So many families are having to cut back nowadays. Shopping without having to budget and think about the cost is an unaffordable luxury for most.

Vikinga · 06/05/2022 14:25

He's your husband though so everything is shared right?

My boyfriend eats more than twice as much as I do. I buy the food when he comes here and he buys it when I go there. His dog also eats 5 x more than mine. Despite us not sharing finances, I can't be that petty. If we also shared finances, I would spend more on clothes, toiletries, hair cuts, kids etc.

Mangogogogo · 06/05/2022 14:25

I don’t necessarily think either of you are being unreasonable but if I got to this stage in a relationship where I begrudged him for spending slightly more than me I’d probs call it a day

Chaoslatte · 06/05/2022 14:27

@TalkingCat the WHO certainly disagrees with you.

So you're being utterly gullible and are advising other women to be gullible too?

You'll be back posting here next year about your cocklodger boyfriend.

Indicatrice · 06/05/2022 14:34

Red meat is a huge carcinogen.

Indicatrice · 06/05/2022 14:34

As are processed meats.

DelilahBucket · 06/05/2022 14:39

My husband eats more than me and DS put together. By your reckoning he should be going on a diet because his food costs more than ours. You are being ridiculously petty OP.

How is it petty? It’s not within budget. They are low earners, if you can’t afford if, you can’t afford it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

ButtockUp · 06/05/2022 15:02

Glad you've got the issue sorted now.

It'd be interesting to hear how you both get on next month. Suspect your husband's in for an eye opener .

mycatisannoying · 05/05/2022 18:06

You're being joyless.

@mycatisannoying

Aye cos there’s nothing more joyful then spunking all their shared money on loads of cheap animal carcass is there?!

Amoozbooze · 06/05/2022 15:09

It's not about one person eating more than the other, it's about one person having 'luxury' items out of the joint budget. I can't understand, even with op's updates and various pp explaining the situation that so many are failing to get the point.

Sunnytwobridges · 06/05/2022 15:09

Good grief. This sounds so petty.

Only petty if money is no object. Which it clearly isn’t to some mumsnetters

Yes. It's really petty of the OP to want to be able to eat properly, rather than always having make do with the cheapest food options she can find so her husband can scoff two chicken breasts in a single meal🙄.

worraliberty · 05/05/2022 18:14

This really is depressing.

If my husband watched and priced up everything that entered my stomach, I don't think I could cope.

"entered my stomach"

What an overly descriptive choice of words.....Confused

"everything I ate" you mean?

midsomermurderess · 06/05/2022 16:32

@LuckySantangelo35
I expect that money is no object to very few people indeed. But this upbraiding, sanctimoniously telling people on a very big site, with users from all walks of life, that they are insufficiently empathetic, overly privileged, because they have a different experiences is beyond tiresome. No one here is bragging or rubbing anyone elses' nose in anything. It starts to feel competitive, look who is struggling most. People on here live lots of different lives, stop devaluing that.

@midsomermurderess

well at the end of the day….the fact remains….no one needs to eat two chicken breasts in one meal. Doesn’t matter what walk of life you coke from.

Blarting · 06/05/2022 18:58

@Indicatrice the OP wasn't asking about the dangers of meat! So again 🙄!!!

Bollindger · 07/05/2022 08:48

Your DH is in for a rude awakening.
You say he will happily eat £5 a day of meat.
For every £1 A day that is £ 30 a month, so if he has £150 that is fine. But we all know he will add snacks and beer and other things your not going to buy...

But not make up and loads of shampoo and wine?

Few men would buy make up but many women don't either. Both sexes use shampoo and drink wine. DS uses more shampoo than me. An ex boyfriend used to wash his hair daily and splatter shampoo and shower gel everywhere.
