Is this racist?

Okay.... so my ex was over at my house tonight to see our kids (he often does this).

Eldest DC was brushing their teeth whilst the same time trying to ask my ex a question.

Because you couldn't make out the words DC was saying with the toothbrush in their mouth, ex then proceeds to imitate the 'sound' saying something like "wah sah wah ha insert random sound here Are you Chinese or something?"

I've just had my arse handed to me by my ex for pointing out it was casually racist and could he not say things like that.

He has kicked up a massive stink which involved shouting, swearing, in which I asked him to leave. Still, the kids overheard him as he was being deliberately loud in shouting at me.

I'm sat here confused as hell.

I know what it is like to be 'othered' and fully sympathise with east asians despite myself having a different racial background

It works both ways. I'm not female but it's not difficult to empathise or show solidarity with other sexes and races. We may not fully understand but it's not virtue signalling to openly talk about incidents like yours.

It's like casual sexism. There's another thread here about a poor woman on holiday, trying to relax but getting jokes from the staff. It must be bloody draining!

every person who has said this is not racist is definitely a white person.

Except for the Chinese person 😏

No it’s not. It’s a fact. Only 50% of white British secondary GCSE students passed their English and Maths. That means 50% failed.

mustlovegin · 04/05/2022 08:54

That means 50% failed

The poster mentioned that 'most' fail. It's not true and it's stereotyping based on race i.e. racist. Would you be comfortable if similar untrue generalisations were made on non-white races?

NippyWoowoo · 04/05/2022 09:03

@roadsweep

In what way are Chinese people a minority?

In the way that they are a minority in the UK. But you are being deliberately obtuse.

OneTC · 04/05/2022 09:04

Is your ex white OP?

OneTC · 04/05/2022 09:07

The poster mentioned that 'most' fail.

most "that fail" are white, not that most white kids fail.

I agree - absolutely bonkers thread and the person who commented the son shouldn't talk with his mouth full when brushing his teeth God help us all 😂

@Discovereads

"Saying “are you Chinese” as a joke by a white man to a white kid because he couldn’t understand what the kid was saying is just a variation on the “it’s all Greek to me” type of comment.

Now of course racism can include white people sitting around and saying derogatory shit about other ethnic groups when they’re not present. But “are you Chinese” is a neutral comment it isn’t derogatory towards Chinese heritage people at all. So it’s not that kind of racism either.

I don’t think it’s offensive at all."

I agree.

If I mumbled as a child I was often asked if I was 'talking double Dutch'.
I don't know of any Dutch people who would be offended by that.

How many Dutch people do you know have been subject to brutal attacks of racism in countries where they are a minority? Confused

50% that fail are non-white. So still wrong, nasty remark and with a racist intent.

A Chinese person has just said they don't think it's racist. Ironic that you're stereotyping when discussing racism.

vivainsomnia · 04/05/2022 09:12

So much hypocrisy! I bet no poster has ever used the sentence 'ex use my French's when cursing, implying the French curse all the time!

Using your definition, that's definitely racist too!

Time to lighten up!

It certainly is, but whites can't be victims of racism, as they are the oppressors. Just one, off a laughable list of excuses, for blaming white people for breathing.

Mxflamingnoravera · 04/05/2022 09:20

I think you were right in calling out as casual racism. I did this when a friend published a graduation list at her son's university on FB and said it looked like the menu in a Chinese restaurant, she was livid and said I was calling her a racist and I had to say, no, what you just said was a racist statement, I did not call you a racist. She flounced off, and unfriended me, but your ex's behaviour afterwards is dreadful. I wouldn't have him back in the house if he behaved like that in front of the children or not.

You definitely can be racist against white people in the UK but it doesn't have quite the same implications. Likewise with sexism. The oppressed acting in the reverse manner isn't acceptable but to say it's 1 : 1 is incorrect.

But you almost forgot white boys so not quite bingo!

@vivainsomnia French isn't a race. They are also anglo saxon. Not African, Asian or Middle Eastern. So your false equivalence doesn't even pass the first hurdle.

And don't dare tell a non-white person to lighten up. Maybe you should grow up and get educated.

mustlovegin · 04/05/2022 09:47

I forgot all French were white....

So it's OK to insult and potentially hurt the feelings of someone due to their nationality as long as it dirsnt refer to their race?

So if your Scottish kid is called a sweaty socks by his fellow English mates, that's OK because thank God, it's not race!

This sprrading virtual signaling is becoming uglier and uglier...

I take my definition of racism/prejudice/discrimination from legislation. The 2010 doesn't exclude white people from the protected race category. Therefore, the left and (some) black ppl telling me, its not the same, bears no weight. It's doing absolutely no favours to addressing racism, whatsoever. It's merely divisive tactics.
