To think Will & Kate calling their dog Orla is insensitive at best

To choose an Irish name for their dog... in light of Britain's history with Ireland.

YABU- get over it, it's a dog
YANBU- it is tone deaf

Why do people think it okay to use the term "deaf" in this way? Deafness is a disability and its the last disability that people think it us okay to use in derogatory ways. Please stop abd think what it means to deaf people when they see their disability used in this way.

Eh, haven't heard of the church asking people to add a Christian name to balance out the pagan since the early 70s.

My DD was baptised Kathleen in 1993. That's not her name or even her second name. The priest wouldn't allow her actual name as it's not a proper catholic name. This was in England.

Grow up fgs

Islandgirl68 · 03/05/2022 21:36

You are being unreasonable. Irish names are not just for the Irish. Nothing wrong with calling her Orla.

SpornStar · 03/05/2022 21:42

I’m Irish and I couldn’t give a flying fuck.

TheOriginalChatelaine · 03/05/2022 21:47

At first I thought this was a toothpaste joke for dyslexics.

WhackusBonkus · 03/05/2022 21:56

Both your YABU and your YANBU RU. And really quite ridiculous as I’m sure you know. They are at perfect liberty to call their dog anything they wish and unless this happens to be “Dick-Head” or similar, most intelligent people will not see an issue.

Also, “It’s just a dog” is irrelevant at best, and mean at worse. You should over yourself for trying to create issues where there are none, just for click-bait and/or to get yourself in the Daily Fail - unless they twattishly thought it up already (sounds about right).

And I should get over myself for adding to that click bait 🙄

Bangolads · 03/05/2022 22:06

I’m Irish- my family lived in the horrors of the troubles. They’re also catholic. My niece is called Orla. I am not offended by the name of their dog and I think you need to get out more.

Ortega888 · 03/05/2022 22:09

Omg I have heard it all now. It’s just a name and I am of Irish heritage and don’t see a problem. With what’s going on in the world we have more to worry about.

Popsicle33 · 03/05/2022 22:11

If this is all you have to get angry about then you're lucky. And batshit.

Longcovid21 · 03/05/2022 22:14

Please don't use the term tone deaf. It's insensitive to deaf people. I voted yabu.

TechGuy · 03/05/2022 22:17

YABU. I'm Irish. No worries - Orla's a nice name - sounds suitable for a dog that's loved.
But seriously, nobody here could give a fiddler's about giving your dog a person's name, Irish or otherwise.
The only dog I even knew that had what you might consider an offensive or insulting name was a wee black dog with tight curly hair up the street who was called the N-word - but that was about 1960 and we kids didn't know any better! When I told my mother his name I got such a clatter my ears are still ringing!

LaDamaDeElche · 03/05/2022 22:19

😂😂😂

Shewhomustbeobeyed1 · 03/05/2022 22:46

You know you’re being ridiculous. You just wanted to post click bait🙄

eldersis · 03/05/2022 23:13

Over the years my families pets have had, what are NOW questionable names. I had a parrot called Isis, my dads black labrador was called ni**er (1950s). My cat, blackie. Orla comes no where near these. I the 80's I had a supervisor called Myra, she said she was christened one week before the crimes of Myra hindley & Ian brady came to light, She thought she may be the last person in the UK to be called Myra.

bluesapphire48 · 03/05/2022 23:37

Maybe you could look at it in a POSITIVE way, as A COMPLIMENT TO THE IRISH instead being so effing NEGATIVE about it.

Nobody, but NOBODY, owns NAMES, for crying out loud.

supperlover · 03/05/2022 23:42

We acquired a poodle from an elderly couple who couldn't look after him any more. They had named him Shandy, which we didn't like, so changed his nanny to Seamus as similar sh sound. We're from Northern Ireland but were living in England at the time. We moved back to N.I and I did worry slightly that we might have a human Seamus living nearby who might not appreciate having a silly French poodle with the same name but everyone thought his name was hilarious.

Op, I think the only people who would be able to understand why this could be construed as offensive are Northern Irish protestants.

How many N.I. Protestants do you know? We're not all mad bigots any more than all white English people are racist. I'm a Northern Irish protestant and all of our children have Irish names. I'm not a mad royalist and couldn't care less what the royals call their dog.

Ineke · 04/05/2022 01:57

By that token, what should we do with Boris then, a Russian name. The HRH’s changed their name to Windsor because of the German connection. Where does it end! How absurd, the 21st century was hopefully a time of a united world, not a divisive nationalistic world. Looking backwards into history is precisely why Putin has visions of the old USSR.

Beammeupscotty1 · 04/05/2022 01:57

Keep your hair on..I only said it was the only group of people this might be insensitive to? I'm well aware that this will not be insensitive all NI protestants, maybe just some. It wasn't meant to offend or insult anybody..jeez

TrishM80 · 04/05/2022 02:05

Get a fucking grip, seriously.

sashh · 04/05/2022 04:25

Every other black and white pet in the UK is called Murphy or Guinness are we going to have a mass renaming of all pets?
