To choose an Irish name for their dog... in light of Britain's history with Ireland.

YABU- get over it, it's a dog
YANBU- it is tone deaf

Órla comes from the ancient Irish name Órfhlaith, which is derived from two Irish words ór (“gold”) and fhlaith (“prince”). So, golden princess! The gold refers to hair colour, so golden-haired princess to be more exact. It's a pagan Celtic name, and if you are baptising your child (or dog) in a Catholic church you will more than likely be asked to add a Christian second name.
However, omit the accent on the O and it means Vomit. Not many people are aware of this, and I'm certain they don't intentionally call their beloved dogs and children Vomit. Although dogs do like to wolf down their own orla.

😂The royal pup is called Vomit 🤣

IWishIHadNotDoneIt · 03/05/2022 20:01

What are William and Kate suppose to say "I am sorry but the British public would be offended if we used that name for our dog. Please chose another."
They are a family just like you and me. Don't take the children's childhood away just because they are royal.

YABU. My dog is called Paddy.

So is mine, but he is Irish! 😅

Eh, haven't heard of the church asking people to add a Christian name to balance out the pagan since the early 70s.

Jetstream · 03/05/2022 20:03

I’m Irish living in Ireland and don’t give a hoot. BTW it should be spelt Órla, it means Golden Princess.
1-orla pronounced urlath is the Irish for vomit.
2-orla as it seems is the Hebrew for foreskin.
If 1 or 2 are wrong, I stand humbly corrected.

Jetstream · 03/05/2022 20:04

Cross post with the post above me.

It's a name that's currently fashionable in the UK. And people give popular human names to their dog. 5 years ago it would have been Luna, 10 years ago it would have been Maya.

They're a basic couple who do basic things. No point looking for offence where there is none.

I'm Irish and I couldn't care less.

"Basic couple, that do basic things" 😂
Oh that's just glorious.

Justrestingmyeyes1 · 03/05/2022 20:08

Seriously???? I’m Irish and couldn’t care less. It’s a nice name - for a dog or human.

Pmen · 03/05/2022 20:12

You are being unreasonable-wise up

BeverForget · 03/05/2022 20:14

Could have called it Mountbatten...

Missingpop · 03/05/2022 20:14

Ffs you need to get out more !!! we’ve got a war going on in Ukraine; Putrid Putin keeps threatening to use nuclear missiles against any western countries that help them & Boring Boris has just announced we are going to give them millions in aid to fight him but all you’ve got to fucking moan about is a pissing dogs name make a cup of tea, sit down & watch the news, you might find something more interesting & more important to whinge about.

Noangelbuthavingfun · 03/05/2022 20:37

OP sorry but you are being UTTERLY ridiculous... find something worthwhile to moan about or get a hobby ... 🙄

startfresh · 03/05/2022 20:40

Never usually vote as I'm on the app, but this one took me to open the browser and vote YABU 😂😂😂

Sizzer40 · 03/05/2022 20:52

As an extremely woke person, I can confirm this is not on the woke agenda. This is just stupidity.
There is a difference.

Surely we should really be up in arms because they chose an anagram of a sex act? They might as well have called it Bob Jowl.

Dirty fuckers.

Brilliant! Bob Jowl Grin

You are absolutely right about 2.

Heythatsmyname · 03/05/2022 21:14

I'm an Orla, and my heart sank a little when I saw British royals using my name for a dog. I can't put my finger on why it feels so disrespectful, but it does.
