To be annoyed that Jude's ice cream have gone mostly vegan and are no longer gluten free?

Royally pissed off. And shouldn't labelling be better regulated to ensure only products made with real milk and cream (aka dairy) are called 'ice cream'? Oat paste should be marketed as something else.

Being the '1st carbon negative ice cream company' will not make any difference if the product is no good or cannot be eaten due to allergens🙄

Who's advising these companies?

Well, if you call being pissed off, angry, upset, that a product that used to cater for those with a disorder that can make you very ill, shorten life span, kill you has been thrown over to cater for those with an eating preference, being narked, then yes. I suppose you are right.

Again, they have been selling vegan ice cream for TWO AND A HALF YEARS so why are you blaming vegans for the change in dairy ice cream now?

I can't eat dairy, wheat, oats or soya as well as a bunch of other things so finding things to eat, especially treats takes a bit of work.

My dietitian suggested the Roar Salted Caramel & Macadamia Ice Cream.

It's Almond based & gluten free and tastes amazing.

Doesn't help with eating ice cream out & about but i just keep my freezer stocked up & eat it at home.

Roar is one that we have occasionally! I can't eat macadamia so haven't tried that flavour, but shall recommend it to my partner. Thanks for mentioning it! Smile

Innocenta · 01/05/2022 12:50

@SamphirethePogoingStickerist Veganism is not 'an eating preference'.

Ice cream doesn't have to contain dairy and more than there's butter in peanut butter. Language changes, that's literally how it works. Literalism about food is just silly.

Innocenta · 01/05/2022 12:50

*any more

(Not 'and more')

Because they have changed the recipe of the NON DAIRY ice cream.

The dairy based is fine for Celiacs who aren't also lactose intolerant - a common concurrent diagnosis due to the damage gluten does to the particular part of the intestines where lactase enzymes are produced in the body.

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 01/05/2022 12:58

What is it then? It is a preferred diet, way of eating?

Being coeliac us living with a medical condition whereby certain common foodstuffs can harm you.

I don't understand why anyone can't see why people with coeliac might be annoyed when a foodstuff is removed from their choices.

And I am neither coeliac nor vegan.

But that is not the vegans fault.

Looking at the company website, they’re doing this to be better for the planet. That’s a good thing.

The whole point of the OP is that they have changed the DAIRY ice cream and not the non-dairy.

i don’t know where you’re looking but both Tesco and sainsburys here stock vegan and non vegan
I think it’s great they’ve gone carbon neutral actually

This ⬆️

Looking at their webpage they seem to still do both dairy and plant based?

Innocenta · 01/05/2022 13:15

@SamphirethePogoingStickerist I already covered answers to your questions earlier in the thread.

Many vegans have medical dietary restrictions too. It isn't a competition.

LoveInSlowMotion · 01/05/2022 13:17

Annoyed yes. But when the company are trying to do a good thing for the planet, then having this much of an issue with not having ice cream is verging on the ridiculous.

One of my kids has an allergy to quite a common food. It’s annoying if products change to contain it, and that’s not even to try to save the planet, but I don’t get this worked up about it. Neither does my child.

Also, it’s quite entitled to feel that animals should be exploited so that you get ice cream.

No.

Vegans, just like anyone else, may have a wide range of medical conditions.

A vegan diet can help with some medical conditions, like colon cancer.

No medical condition mandates a vegan diet.

Unlike coeliac.

The dairy is still gluten free (except for the obvious ones where wheat is listed in the ingredients). No May Contain Gluten warning, either. They also used to promote the Vegan as gluten free.

So this 'better for the planet' thing is encouraging non-lactose intolerant Celiacs to switch to their dairy products. Is that the consequence you hoped for?

ChillyFloss · 01/05/2022 13:31

The difference is that veganism is a lifestyle choice. Celiac Disease is a medical condition.

successstories · 01/05/2022 13:32

The dairy is still gluten free

The dairy ones are now also not gluten free either unfortunately

What?

OP is saying the dairy isn’t gluten free.

I wasn’t hoping for any consequences. 🙃 I’ve never even heard of this company before reading this post. Presumably the company have done their research and believe that this is the best direction to take their company in. It’s unfortunate that coeliacs can no longer have their ice cream, but again, nobody needs ice cream.

just want tasty ice cream from a brand they trust

Hmmm..so they changed their offering substantially, not informed customers properly of new allergens and you cannot spot the difference unless you scrutinise the packaging very closely.

Not sure you can say these are the 'tasty and trusted' products we used to be able to buy.

I’m very fed up of your selective quoting of my posts.

You’re upset a brand you used to like is no longer gluten-free. I get it.

I just think you’re wrong about why they’ve changed.

Fuck's sake. It doesn't say that on the packaging or ingredients list.

For allergens see ingredients in bold.
Lifestyle
Suitable for Vegetarians
Allergy advice
May Contain Eggs
May Contain Nuts
May Contain Peanuts
May also contain traces of Egg, Nuts and Peanut.

Haagen Dazs does say gluten free on their dairy ice creams (the ones where they don't list wheat in the ingredients). Maybe that'll help you out?

Tomnooktoldmeto · 01/05/2022 13:45

Thanks for highlighting this @successstories we often buy Jude’s but won’t be able to now as we’re a coeliac family and 2/3 of us are oat sensitive. I’m really getting fed up of this oat replacement crap as we’re also vegetarian and it’s happening a lot in our foods

That ‘oat replacement crap’ means animals aren’t being exploited, which is good. I think it’s right that we should be looking make our foods less harmful to the planet and that don’t harm animals. That obviously includes foods people with medical conditions/allergies.

LoveInSlowMotion · 01/05/2022 13:58

Posted before I meant to.

That obviously includes making sure there are sufficient foods people with medical conditions/allergies. Big to just call it oat replacement crap when it provides an alternative to animal exploitation and helps them planet, is 🙄

Just back from a difficult holiday abroad where the only place I managed to find gluten free food out and about at lunchtime was McDonalds. It's not just the UK where vegan options are replacing the gluten free ones.

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 01/05/2022 14:08

For those saying veganism is a lifestyle choice, isn’t eating ice cream also a lifestyle choice too?

fwiw I’ve been a vegan since a small child as I couldn’t eat meat/dairy/eggs. It is a physical revulsion - it isn’t a bandwagon jumping decision and for the first time in decades I’m actually being catered for.
