Do I deserve this? I'm banned from Marks and Spencers nationally!

I went shopping at my local M&S. I got some milk, bread, eggs etc.. of course with my buggy. I pay then I go out of the store..then a man comes and wants to come to their security office. Then I look down on my buggy and realize that there is a magazine that I forgot to pay for so then I apologize and ask him if he called me in for that. And there is him and another woman and a man (three people).. and he says that from now on I'm banned from M & S nationwide. They also call the police so they come down to the office and they tell M & S they can't put me on a criminal charge and just takes my name address and phone number. I thought this was a bit much. I'm extremely upset and I don't know what to do. Now they made me leave the shop with letter that I'm banned nationally from all M&S.

@kandymouse I'm with the others, it does seem stupidly excessive power hungry store detectives unless there is a big backstory of you being prolific shoplifter! Grin

FWIW, I bought some magic pants and a bra from Sainsbury's yesterday, went through the smart scan, heard a beep as I left the checkout bit. Then the main alarm at the door went off as I left too. I knew (a) I'd paid and (b) neither item had a tag on so I just carried on walking. Nobody batted an eyelid.

nannybeach · 29/03/2018 08:06

Re the Sainsbury incident, if you havent left a store with goods not paid for, you cannot be "charged" with theft. I have nearly done this several times with the open plant shops in shopping Malls, but seeing as I was still carrying a basket am assuming they would know this is a genuine mistake. Agree tottaly ridiculous of M & S, I frankly wouldnt want to go in there after this anyway. I bough a bag once in New Look, unbeknown to me they forgot to remove the security tag, inside, I didnt notice it either. Went to local library to borrow a book, had t 2 bags of shopping, the secutiry alarm went off, the made me stand there and empty out both my shopping bags, was so embarraed, later was advised they are not allowed to do this, but I would have felt far worse if I had been escourted to an office, with everyone watching assuming I had stolen a library book!

This thread is 10 years old Grin

I want to know how the fuck you actually even FIND a 10 year old thread! Grin

CadyHeron · 29/03/2018 18:25

I want to know how the fuck you actually even FIND a 10 year old thread!

Via the search box. Say you'd been banned from a shop and wanted to see if there were anyone out there who'd had a similar experience.
You'd just need to type in something like "Banned from M and S" and all other threads would come up.
Or a nightmare neighbour - eg "neighbour pinching my parcels" all similar threads over the years would come up. Smile

Forrest, you're 10 years and 2.5 months out
of date, love.

I’ve read through the thread (spotted it was a zombie but decided to read anyway), and what strikes me most is how supportive and generally more pleasant posters are compared to the current state of affairs in AIBU. I’ve only been around since 2011/12 but things have changed a lot.

TheHumanMothboy · 29/03/2018 19:25

Fucking hell- I remember reading this the first time! Shock
How can it have been so long ago??

IpeedInthePoolImSorry · 29/03/2018 23:17

kandymouse Surely the police cannot do anything if you offered to pay for the magazine and admitted it was a mistake?

scottishdiem · 30/03/2018 00:35

So how are shops supposed to tell the difference between shoplifters and accidental non-payers? The OP walked out without paying. Which is theft.

Its not an overreaction to ban thieves.

(shoplifters sometimes try a new technique with a small cheap thing to test. Then go back for something bigger/more expensive if they arent caught. The ban is to make sure that M&S stores elsewhere dont get hit for something bigger 'accidentally' making into the buggy. The entitlement here that shoptlifters can write to demand a ban be lifted is staggering).

CatStacks · 30/03/2018 01:30

how can they ban you from shops that have never seen you it's all words no action they are annoyed the police didn't want to (and rightfully so) arrest you.

write to head office about the incident this was over the top and embarrassing and not acceptable

CatStacks · 30/03/2018 01:32

wonder if op is here so she can at least tell the mystery if she is still banned

Maryqc · 30/03/2018 01:36

Arrrgh can't believe this aged zombie is still here tonight, though lol at the suggestions of snubbing M&S and heading to Woolworths or BHS 😂
