Do I deserve this? I'm banned from Marks and Spencers nationally!

I went shopping at my local M&S. I got some milk, bread, eggs etc.. of course with my buggy. I pay then I go out of the store..then a man comes and wants to come to their security office. Then I look down on my buggy and realize that there is a magazine that I forgot to pay for so then I apologize and ask him if he called me in for that. And there is him and another woman and a man (three people).. and he says that from now on I'm banned from M & S nationwide. They also call the police so they come down to the office and they tell M & S they can't put me on a criminal charge and just takes my name address and phone number. I thought this was a bit much. I'm extremely upset and I don't know what to do. Now they made me leave the shop with letter that I'm banned nationally from all M&S.

That is absolutely outragious! FFS who would steal 1 f**king magazine! Especially having paid for all other items. Just think they are not paid for brains in that shop. I would write a letter to the head office explaining in full what happened and saying that you intend to seek legal advice for defamation of character by the police and for embarrassment caused, unless you are allowed to shop in their stores again.
Sorry and what LoveAngel said!

Limara · 13/01/2008 10:24

I think they should have given her the benefit of the doubt and as an ex M&S exployee posted, read her the riot act and given her a good talking too.

Totally outragious behaviour by M&S, she could have been a really good customer before this-benefit of doubt.

cornsilk · 13/01/2008 10:27

Who do they think they are? Go to Waitrose instead.

filthymindedvixen · 13/01/2008 10:38

my eldest used to grab random things like a carrot or a potato or even one of those plastic price slips from a display and shove it in his cosy-toes....you'd lift him out of his pushchair and a dozen small (worthless) objects would tumble out

ThreeBluecubs · 13/01/2008 21:45

I surprised you even managed to get into a Marks and Spencers store with a buggy to be honest. Their isles are so ridiculously narrow.

It is so easy to do when you are trying to look after your children, who are obviously a priority. I'd write too.

pralinegirl · 14/01/2008 21:37

I'd call your local newspaper. Most mothers at least occasionally shop there and they can't afford bad publicity - Its bad enough having to juggle kids and shopping without idiots not being willing to give the benefit of the doubt and trust a bit! Lots of mums have done this, this response is out of order.

That's great @Forest33 but is there a particular reason why you bumped up a ten year old thread?

Maryqc · 29/03/2018 00:45

Why has this thread been restarted after 10 years 😂

MeltSnow · 29/03/2018 00:59

Maryqc. I Haven’t a clue why forrest revived the thread but I’ve got to say I’m kind of curious if the OP is still banned and if she is does she care 🤔

I’ve reported the thread to MNHQ and politely suggested they put a ZOMBIE warning on it.

CadyHeron · 29/03/2018 01:07

Oh wow, just came on to ask how it went and if they're still able to go into M and S 10 years later Grin
Then see I've been beaten to it.
Looks like someone could have been searching M and S posts, and stumbled across this one and reactivated it

Oldsu · 29/03/2018 01:07

You may get a 'fine' from a civil recovery company employed by M&S if you do you need to take advice, the people on the consumer forum boards are very knowledgeable about these companies and are very helpful

www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk/forum/forumdisplay.php?236-Retail-loss-Prevention-Other-shoplifting-allegations.

CadyHeron · 29/03/2018 01:09

Oldsu,I hope they've resolved it by now 10 years later.OP, if you're still out there, are you still banned or did you sort it?! Grin

Oldsu · 29/03/2018 01:11

CadyHeron yes just realised its a zombie thread don't know why it was revisited

Talkingfrog · 29/03/2018 01:24

It wouldn't have happened in my local WHSmith as they have no staff!

Myself and another lady were waiting to pay the other day. In the end I went to find a member of staff. When she served me, she said that "people usually use the self serve". I responded that "two of us didn't want to use the self serve" She then explained that there were only two members of staff in the store and that they had other jobs to do. (Basically saying that she didn't want to serve me as I was being an inconvenience).

When I was younger I worked in Primark on a Saturday for about 7 years, so have some idea as to what is involved in retail and how busy it can be. I would have been expected to stop what I was doing to help on the tills if there was a queue, and would do so without being asked. We were also expected to keep an eye out for shoplifters and report to a manager or security guard if we noticed anything.

Security wise anyone could have walked out of that smiths with anything as there was no security guard and the only staff member was at the back of the store.

I have got to the doors, or once even out in the street, and then realised I had something in my hand, and walked back in to pay for it. When I have said what had happened the staff weren't phased by it at all. Did get told I was honest for going back in. When your mind is already thinking about where else you need to go and what else you need to do, it can be easy to forget what you are actually supposed to be doing there and then.

Sounds like it was a bit of an over-reaction, but maybe you weren't the first that day.

maras2 · 29/03/2018 06:09

10 YEAR OLD THREAD !

Pengggwn · 29/03/2018 06:26

Has the OP managed to shop in M&S again yet AFTER A DECADE?

BarbaraofSevillle · 29/03/2018 06:34

Ha ha. I saw the January and 8 at the end and I thought it was from January this year and thought that the OP might have been coming back with a resolution a few weeks later, but it's slightly older than that.

Well I suppose the OP probably isn't at risk of any buggy related shopping mistake these days?

MissDuke · 29/03/2018 06:41

Darn read the whole thread without realising it was a zombie Angry

Anyway, I ma pretty shocked at how many people WON'T take back something they have accidentally stolen, how is that different to deliberate stealing? Shock No wonder M&S take such a hard stance.

Catspaws · 29/03/2018 06:49

What a ridiculous overreaction, you poor thing! M&S shouldn't be treated parents this way, especially as you have no record and are clearly not actually a shoplifter! Agree with PP that you should appeal, surely no reasonable person would uphold this?

Catspaws · 29/03/2018 06:50

Argh zombie thread. Who dragged this one up?!

givemesteel · 29/03/2018 07:08

MUMSNET HQ can you please introduce a zombie alert on old threads as this seems to keep happening now. Usually because someone wants to put a link up selling something.

Seems to be a lot of irritating people on Mumsnet right now...

MrsJoshDun · 29/03/2018 07:13

How’s the lifetime ban going after a decade @kandymouse

Slarti · 29/03/2018 07:22

I think they've overreacted OP. I'd spite them by switching to Woolworths.

Littlebelina · 29/03/2018 07:27

Grin Slarti or BHS maybe?
