To not want another bank holiday?

Ok hear me out, for people working in 9-5 jobs or industry’s that regularly have weekends off, bank holidays are a great thing. For everyone working in service industries though, it really isn’t. It’s yet another day we pay for childcare that can’t be used (but we have to pay as that’s in the contract), it’s another day of work while everyone else is having a wonderful time. It’s another day where we have to suck it up and deal with people being extra drunk/rude/obnoxious because… bank holiday. I’d really rather he sorted out the tax/universalcredit/benefits system/nhs/midwife crisis/underfunding of schools and social care or just about anything else rather than try to grab some popularity points to cover his rich tax avoiding backside.

yabu. if there isn't another one, you will be working and paying for childcare anyway.

Axahooxa · 26/04/2022 21:07

YANBU but I do want another bank holiday.

Bywayofanupdate · 26/04/2022 21:07

Those of us who work 9-5 also have to pay childcare that we can't use. It's written in to our contracts too.
Also, Boris doesn't plan the bank holidays so you can't blame this one on him.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 26/04/2022 21:08

I get paid double time on BH so I don’t mind them.

Pbbananabagel · 26/04/2022 21:11

@biggreenhouse yes but if there is one, I loose £80 for the day in nursery and loose wages by having to take the day off unpaid.

I think you'll find this is a "Thank Holiday" there'll be no drunkenness, just a whole day of clapping for the NHS/teachers/whoever. Hurray!

Won't we get one when the queen pops her clogs anyway?

Pbbananabagel · 26/04/2022 21:16

@Bywayofanupdate you would have the day off though and so not need to choose between loosing a day’s pay and trying to find someone to have your child (when they already help as much as they can).
also, I was referring Rishi Sunak’s tax avoiding backside but interesting that you’re lumping Boris in there too 😂

We don't need another one in June, how about Halloween time to break up August to Christmas.

biggreenhouse · 26/04/2022 21:17

Well you said in your OP you will be working, so not sure why it's now an unpaid leave day. enjoy having the extra day with your child / family

Pbbananabagel · 26/04/2022 21:22

@biggreenhouse i’m putting forward the case for people in service industries not just myself, in this position people like me are damned if we do and damned if we don’t, either way we loose out. £80 is a lot of money. If I don’t work, I loose £160. That’s a huge amount of money when you’re JAM and especially now.

YABU because leisure time drives spending and our economy is fucked enough thanks to bastard brexit so we need all the help we can get.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 26/04/2022 21:32

Op I completely understand. It's only very recently I haven't had to work bank holidays weekends due to a career change but when I was in hospitality I hated them with a passion. Especially this time of year when it's (usually) sunny so everyone flocks to the nearest pub/beer garden.

People go on 2 day benders and the amount of drunken arseholes I've had who've either groped me, tried to hit me, vomit (or other bodily fluids) on me is disgraceful.

I worked in hospitality for 10 years and at least one of the above happened EVERY bank holiday without fail so it's not just a couple of people like this.

Re childcare, it's shit because you HAVE to pay yet can't use it, so have to find alternative care, whilst already paying for one, that you can't use.... It doesn't make sense!

Haudyourwheesht · 26/04/2022 21:33

My DC's nursery is open and on the days it's not (1 week a year) you don't have to pay.

balalake · 26/04/2022 21:35

It's not going to happen, it's another story to distract us from the immoral government.

Pbbananabagel · 26/04/2022 21:37

@SliceOfCakeCupOfTea this is exactly what I mean, it’s exhausting just knowing there’s one coming up.

I have to use my AL to cover the BH most of the time!

Most of the venues I've worked, staff aren't allowed to use annual leave on bank holidays as they're too busy.

latebreakfast · 26/04/2022 21:44

YANBU. I'm self employed - if I take the day off then it will be unpaid.

ssd · 26/04/2022 21:45

Dh gets the BH, I dont but i dont grudge him

Dimondsareforever · 26/04/2022 21:46

Confused … who is ‘he’?! You referring to Boris? I don’t think you can blame that on him. Why turn the post into a government bashing post when it’s about a bank holiday system that’s been around for over 100 years? (And the May Day one introduced in 1978 … according to Google).

We are getting an extra one this year

PansyPetunia · 26/04/2022 21:48

I'm happy to have many many bank holidays!!

I'm a retail manager....we are busy. Sales are up!

And staff are on time and a half pay!

Statutory leave includes bank holidays though, so you should get paid for them anyway.

museumum · 26/04/2022 21:51

I used two different nurseries when dc were preschool age and both were open every day except 25/26 Dec and 1 Jan. they also offered shift patterns. Surely ours can’t be the only nurseries that cater for emergency services / hospital staff etc?

Apple42 · 26/04/2022 21:53

As a childminder I never charged for bank holidays as I was not prepared to work them. It was never an issue for the families I had, if I was asked ( I never was) I would have charged double time.
