To not want another bank holiday?

Ok hear me out, for people working in 9-5 jobs or industry’s that regularly have weekends off, bank holidays are a great thing. For everyone working in service industries though, it really isn’t. It’s yet another day we pay for childcare that can’t be used (but we have to pay as that’s in the contract), it’s another day of work while everyone else is having a wonderful time. It’s another day where we have to suck it up and deal with people being extra drunk/rude/obnoxious because… bank holiday. I’d really rather he sorted out the tax/universalcredit/benefits system/nhs/midwife crisis/underfunding of schools and social care or just about anything else rather than try to grab some popularity points to cover his rich tax avoiding backside.

@biggreenhouse i’m putting forward the case for people in service industries not just myself, in this position people like me are damned if we do and damned if we don’t, either way we loose out. £80 is a lot of money. If I don’t work, I loose £160. That’s a huge amount of money when you’re JAM and especially now.

YABU for sayig loose when you mean lose.
Get a different job if you don't like it 🤷‍♀️

I hate bank holidays. I work in hospitality. This one is going to be hell. Drunken assholes or over entitled assholes. I won’t get paid any more for serving the afore mentioned. I will have to work longer hours. I won’t get a break in a 12 hour shift but will be expected to do it all with a smile on my face. Yuck.

I love working bank holidays (I do bar work as a second job but used to manage pubs). It's a massive boost for the business especially at the moment when they've had such a hard time. A busy shift passes so quickly, loads of tips - drunk people are generous people. If you hate it so much perhaps it's the wrong profession for you?! To the person saying they got groped and covered in bodily fluids. If they are THAT drunk they should be turfed out and should not be being served. Not sure why you or your manager were tolerating that.

Do away with bank holidays, I can't see the point of them anymore when so much is open and so many people have to work. Banks are barely even open on normal days as it is. As long as everyone has the equivalent in days off that they can use when they want, would anyone miss them?

Lhddujvf · 29/04/2022 07:43

YANBU what's the point when the shops are open.

If you work bank holidays, you get additional annual leave to take at another time though. So that would be an extra day that you don't need childcare.

We don't get an additional day to take at another time. If it's your day to work you work, if it's not your day to work you still have to do 4 Bank Holidays a year. No extra pay no day off at another time.
Absolutely shit. I'm desperate to get out of retail

Bunnyfuller · 29/04/2022 09:38

The govt didn’t give the extra BH, the Queen did, for her jubilee. I’m not one for defending our fuckwit govt, but please don’t give them the credit for doing something (for many) nice

BurnstonesMama · 29/04/2022 09:55

I don't work in the service or hospitality industry now but I do work for a boss who doesn't recognise any of these extra bank holidays. So, it's really frustrating seeing everyone else get all the new bank holidays and planning fun stuff when it's not even a discussion in our office. It will be business as usual here :(

Daddydog · 29/04/2022 13:47

Swings and roundabouts. Bank holidays don't mean work magically stops - most people in a '9-5' have to work extra hours to avoid loosing a whole day in a 4 day week. It's a false economy! At least with service jobs you can't really take your work home.

Squillerman · 29/04/2022 14:05

Well, your job is ultimately your choice. If you’d prefer a 9-5 office job, get applying!

Stop moaning. I worked 12 hour shifts for years on bank holidays. We got the days back in our annual leave. I loved it as I was off when all the drunks were back in work. I could go to the shops when they werent busy.

Lucky you but not everyone does get the day back later

Jojofjo44 · 29/04/2022 17:08

YABU, you only don't want one because of the industry you work in. Its selfish to begrudge everyone else an extra BH just because of your personal circumstances. Myself and my husband worked in the service industry for years, and now we get weekends and bank holidays off they're much appreciated. Change your profession instead if it's something you want.

Rosebel · 29/04/2022 17:48

Bank Holidays are pointless anyway. So many people have to work. A proper holiday where everywhere is shut would be better.
If you want to spend time with your friends and family why does everywhere need to be open?

That would be so much better. And if you get Too ill or a burglar enters your house Aw well shit happens come back tomorrow. Or by everyone do you mean everyone bar emergencies?

Passthegin99 · 29/04/2022 22:37

Couldn't agree more. Since having kids and becoming self-employed bank holidays are the ultimate fuck you reminder of the carefree life I used to have before I swapped my pelvic floor for an angry human who lives to berate me
