To not want another bank holiday?

Ok hear me out, for people working in 9-5 jobs or industry’s that regularly have weekends off, bank holidays are a great thing. For everyone working in service industries though, it really isn’t. It’s yet another day we pay for childcare that can’t be used (but we have to pay as that’s in the contract), it’s another day of work while everyone else is having a wonderful time. It’s another day where we have to suck it up and deal with people being extra drunk/rude/obnoxious because… bank holiday. I’d really rather he sorted out the tax/universalcredit/benefits system/nhs/midwife crisis/underfunding of schools and social care or just about anything else rather than try to grab some popularity points to cover his rich tax avoiding backside.

Your nursery charges for days when they won't be open? That's bizarre. Ours doesn't.

Almost all nurseries charge for bank Holidays but are closed. The logic being that they still have to pay the staff for the bank holiday, but I agree it is shit especially for parents who still have to work the BH, and is unfairly weighted towards people who use nursery on a Monday.

Not round my parts they don’t. Round my way if the nursery is shut then there is no charge as no service is being provided. I can’t believe that’s a thing.

I think it would be far better to increase the number of days minimum holiday allowance - treat people like adults, have the day when you want to use it.

Oh shall we do that with Christmas & Easter too?

the point is having days that as a nation we celebrate together.

I'm in my 50's for the Silver Jubilee we had an amazing street party, us kids spent months colouring in Union Jacks, which my Dad strung across our cul de sac, he painted our garage door as a Union Jack.

They organised fancy dress parade & other games, we all dressed up in red/white/blue for races. We had lunch in our garden (loads of tresses tables). School had a fun day, dress up, various games, competitions (I won best decorated bike)

fantasic memories because the who street pitched in & built up to it for months.

it wasn't ignored, it wasn't 'ordered online'. - I miss those days.

I appreciate your POV but I don't agree with it. One of our neighbours was a nurse & had to work, my parents & another neighbour looked after her kids (her DH was a pilot & away) & she joined in when she came home.

times were different
times were better

I’m not sure that I’m a fan of bank holidays anymore, as it’s making you take your leave. I’d rather take it whenever I want.

Change profession of it bothers you that much

Indeed. No one forced you to work in the industry you do Confused

Mine doesn’t. It’s a big national chain. They only charge for those days that are opened

megletthesecond · 27/04/2022 06:52

I don't want one in summer. I'd like one in November and one in February.

DockOTheBay · 27/04/2022 06:55

Schools have been told they have to add a day off somewhere if the extra bank holiday falls in half term.
I don't think our school is doing this... we just have an INSET day on the Friday before half term.

UnicornPooPoo · 27/04/2022 06:59

YABU. Just because it doesn't suit you, it suits plenty of other people. It sounds as though you work in the service industry so I'd have thought you'd welcome as much trade as possible?

I’ve long said we should have 6th November so it doesn’t matter how late you stay up on the 5th. Firework sales could be more restricted that way.

Lulu1919 · 27/04/2022 06:24

I'm a TA
The extra Bank Hol is in half term
So no benefit to me or anyone else in education!!

Thats not true schools have added an extra day off where they please.

CornishGem1975 · 27/04/2022 07:07

I like a bank holiday but yes this extra one means I'm paying nursery £70 for nothing because it falls on our nursery day and because the other one has moved I still need to try and find childcare for another day I have to work. Giving us two days off at the end of the week doesn't miraculously mean I can pull a babysitter out of my hat.

CornishGem1975 · 27/04/2022 07:09

Pressed post to soon - meant to add "a babysitter out of the hat that I've got to pay again on top of the money that I have to pay nursery for not looking after my child"!

Eggshelly · 27/04/2022 07:12

It’s yet another day we pay for childcare that can’t be used (but we have to pay as that’s in the contract) that's the same for a lot of people not in service industry. it’s another day of work while everyone else is having a wonderful time. not everyone else, there are loads of people who work bank Holidays.

Maybe have a career change if people enjoying themselves bothers you.

Cherrysoup · 27/04/2022 07:15

Could really do without it, students have their Spanish speaking exam the day after, would love the last minute practice.

Eggshelly · 27/04/2022 07:16

Pbbananabagel · 26/04/2022 23:25

A few people saying change profession or “doesn’t everyone get it back in holiday pay”… it’s really not that simple.

Why not? Try a new career? Be brave you might love it.

TabithaTittlemouse · 27/04/2022 07:19

Selfishly I like the extra pay on bank holidays.

NewPapaGuinea · 27/04/2022 07:24

Some companies are now offering staff a choice for when they use their bank holiday entitlement which is a great idea.

justfiveminutes · 27/04/2022 07:27

OP, the service industry is desperate to recruit staff. Could you look for a job with better policies and conditions? This thread has shown you that many people get extra pay for working a BH or a day off elsewhere.

Or look for another nursery. Again, this thread has shown you that many nurseries do not charge for days that they are not offering their service.

I think people in your situation, having to work with no extra pay or days off in lieu, and using a nursery that charges as usual, must be a minority in society ergo YABU as most people enjoy an extra paid day off; we already get fewer BH than most EU countries.

And people saying that children are 'never in school' - they are in school for 190 days every year, but 189 days this year. It is not a huge difference really.

worriedatthistime · 27/04/2022 07:34

But you get a day in lieu for bank holidAys everyone is entitled to 28 days

MrsLargeEmbodied · 27/04/2022 07:38

i dont work mondays so i do not benefit

MrsLargeEmbodied · 27/04/2022 07:38

Not working Mondays means you get the leave added to your entitlement. If you're part time, not working Monday probably gives the biggest benefit! You get an extra few days leave (pro rata) to take it when you want.

TheWayoftheLeaf · 27/04/2022 07:41

Yeah I get you. I've worked a lot of bank holidays over the last two years and it sucks when everyone's asking you to come to X or what your plans are and you're working. Plus my DP gets them off so gets to have fun without me lol. It's shit.

But, I can't begrudge others the day. Hopefully one day I'll get bank holidays too!

RaininSummer · 27/04/2022 07:41

I would much rather be given more annual leave to use when I choose. Bank holidays are too busy to do anything nice. Also for those like my last job who have bank holidays included on the legal minimum leave it really sucks.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 27/04/2022 07:42

you dont get the bank holidays that you dont use, added to your entitlement, you used to, but they cottoned on sadly
