To not want another bank holiday?

Pbbananabagel · 26/04/2022 21:04

Ok hear me out, for people working in 9-5 jobs or industry’s that regularly have weekends off, bank holidays are a great thing. For everyone working in service industries though, it really isn’t. It’s yet another day we pay for childcare that can’t be used (but we have to pay as that’s in the contract), it’s another day of work while everyone else is having a wonderful time. It’s another day where we have to suck it up and deal with people being extra drunk/rude/obnoxious because… bank holiday. I’d really rather he sorted out the tax/universalcredit/benefits system/nhs/midwife crisis/underfunding of schools and social care or just about anything else rather than try to grab some popularity points to cover his rich tax avoiding backside.

I sometimes fantasise about working in a job where you don't work bank holidays.

AIBU to expect A&E to close so I can have the day off?

Sofielou · 28/04/2022 17:27

I can't bloody wait for it!! I'm exhausted and I need the rest. And I'm really looking forward to spending the day with my 1 yo - working FT I miss out on so much. 😢

Mikey87 · 28/04/2022 18:29

You are being unreasonable, just book the bloody day off.

Bignanny30 · 28/04/2022 19:04

No it isn’t necessary!

IrishNinja · 28/04/2022 19:08

My work place doesn't give us bank holidays off or any extra money. But YABU to begrudge others for getting it. Also you may change jobs in the future, then you'll be sorry you decreed no more bank holidays! 😉

Meinmytree · 28/04/2022 19:32

YABU. An extra day off? Bring it on! We get very few bank hols compared to other European countries.

Pbbananabagel · 28/04/2022 19:34

@IrishNinja i absolutely don’t begrudge it to anyone, I was more annoyed at Sunak and co. Using it as a smoke screen to draw attention away from their negative press but as I said before, probably didn’t word it well.

@Pbbananabagel TBF I skipped a lot of comments. But you're definitely not BU to be pissed at those pricks.

DungballInADress · 28/04/2022 19:48

OP, I get it, completely. I used to work in retail and it was a day that DH would be off and I would inevitably trudge into work, where some absolute genius at head office would have set the daily target for twice what it would be on a normal day only for there to be sod all customers because eveeyone else was either working or having a lovely day drinking or recovering post-drinking, miss our targets and then be told all the reasons why we had done it wrong. Meanwhile DH would be home either alone or with out child while I missed out.

I had a career change after DS2. I managed to secure a part time office job that ended up going full time. Every bank holiday, every Christmas closedown I'm grateful even after 10 years. I realise that doesn't find your childcare or make it easier, but people do appreciate it's shit.

riceuten · 28/04/2022 19:53

I remember a post a few years ago whining about how ‘school holidays were too long’ and that ‘schools should operate 48 weeks a year like most people’. I file this argument against additional leave with that kind of thinking. We have one of the lowest numbers of public holidays in Europe and an extra day would certainly not go amiss.

Appleby11 · 28/04/2022 20:02

YANBU. I'm self employed and it's another day off where I can't work and therefore can't earn any money.

Pbbananabagel · 26/04/2022 23:25

A few people saying change profession or “doesn’t everyone get it back in holiday pay”… it’s really not that simple.

Come on, OP. Don't be silly. Everyone knows you can switch professions, just like that. I suggest you get a cleaner and have a spa day while you're at it. Come to think of it, you could spend the lovely extra Bank Holiday day at a spa, dreaming of the lovely life that lies ahead of you in the new profession you'll be seamlessly entering the following week.

ssd · 28/04/2022 20:11

😂why didnt i think of that, i could swap my boring retail job for something well paid and exciting, just like that....

Oh God, don't tell me you hadn't realised, either. I dunno what MN is coming to these days.

Familylimbo · 28/04/2022 21:30

You’ll get the day at another time or get paid for it

YourWinter · 28/04/2022 21:38

I work part time as a supermarket cashier. The store closes an hour earlier on bank holidays but is fully staffed 24/7, it only closes completely on 25/26 December, NYD and Easter Sunday. My shifts are on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and I’ve had enough of working every BH when the other grandmothers I know are enjoying time with their families - roll on retirement, I’m counting the weeks!

When I worked in a hospital, over 30 years ago, my children were little but I didn’t mind working Bank Holidays at all - hospitals matter in a way retail doesn’t, and shouldn’t, back in the good old days all stores closed on Sundays and nobody starved as a result.

Anyway, happy BH weekend to everyone who is able to enjoy an extra day off work!

Hmm1234 · 28/04/2022 21:45

YANBU but it is a nightmare for 9-5 office types with children who usually go to nursery aswell! We don’t need another day off and being at home . Nurseries are closed, I realised it was bank holiday less than a week before and it’s another day of moms holiday camp

SmellyWellyWoo · 28/04/2022 22:26

There are loads of low paid jobs which get paid bank holidays- loads in the civil service for example. I know because I did one myself for many years!

wentworthinmate · 28/04/2022 22:32

Those who run their own business will lose another day of trade. My boss is one of them, has to pay his staff while earning nothing.

WeasilyPleased · 28/04/2022 22:32

YABU. It's my birthday and my dh doesn't have to take time off!

Snaketime · 28/04/2022 22:59

Yanbu OP. Bank Holiday's suck. Both me and my DH have to work days we don't usually work because of the extra amount of people about and have to find overnight childcare for our DC.

nannykatherine · 28/04/2022 23:44

I don’t understand the childcare moan

Runnerduck34 · 29/04/2022 00:08

I used to have to work bank holidays and was always a bit sad that I missed out on family time when everyone else was off, however I wouldn't want to get rid of bank holidays, if you work them you should get time off in lieu/have a day added to your leave so you will still benefit but sadly not at the same time as most other people.

I don’t understand the childcare moan

It's a very simple concept.
