To not want another bank holiday?

Pbbananabagel · 26/04/2022 21:04

Ok hear me out, for people working in 9-5 jobs or industry’s that regularly have weekends off, bank holidays are a great thing. For everyone working in service industries though, it really isn’t. It’s yet another day we pay for childcare that can’t be used (but we have to pay as that’s in the contract), it’s another day of work while everyone else is having a wonderful time. It’s another day where we have to suck it up and deal with people being extra drunk/rude/obnoxious because… bank holiday. I’d really rather he sorted out the tax/universalcredit/benefits system/nhs/midwife crisis/underfunding of schools and social care or just about anything else rather than try to grab some popularity points to cover his rich tax avoiding backside.

Change profession of it bothers you that much

Felix0204 · 26/04/2022 23:14

I don't either I'm going to lose hours 🤣

mmmmmmghturep · 26/04/2022 23:20

Not great for those in working class jobs who will still have to go to work for minimum wage and then have to pay time and a half or double time taxi fare to get home because the buses arent running

Pbbananabagel · 26/04/2022 23:25

A few people saying change profession or “doesn’t everyone get it back in holiday pay”… it’s really not that simple.

YABU because bank holidays don't revolve around parents who can't be arsed to fork out for child care for the children they chose to have

Thank God

If you work bank holidays, you get additional annual leave to take at another time though. So that would be an extra day that you don't need childcare.

For nurseries you pay for the week so if OP decides to book a day off she would still be paying full fees.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 26/04/2022 23:42

I have to work bank holidays. I don't mind as we get double pay or a day back in lieu.

So the more the merrier as far as I'm concerned 😁

SeemsSoUnfair · 26/04/2022 23:47

They should just get rid of all the bank holidays and put us all on a 4 day working week.

Pbbananabagel · 26/04/2022 23:52

@AlbusSeverusHagrid Do you have a bridge you need to sit under?

DH gets 28 days holiday (which includes bank holiday allowance). He hasn’t been given any extra holiday for the extra bank holiday. He works shifts so if he is on rota to work a BH, he just works it as a normal day. I am self employed so don’t get paid holidays.

Very Badly timed in the middle of exams - GCSE and A levels.

noisy street parties and 3 days of drinking music and dancing at pub closest to us, should make revision challenging...

Actual anniversary of coronation was months ago so the government could easily have scheduled the mass national party after the exams...

Actually although the Queen succeeded to the throne in February 1952, the 70th anniversary of the coronation isn't until 2nd June next year (it took that long to arrange) Maybe there will be another extra BH again next year?

AlbusSeverusHagrid · 27/04/2022 00:37

@Pbbananabagel absolutely not, but you're the entitled parent whinging about bank holidays and child care when you chose to have a child. Presumably you looked up the cost of child care and bank holidays have been in existence since the conception of you child so its your issue

ThinWomansBrain · 27/04/2022 00:47

I think it would be far better to increase the number of days minimum holiday allowance - treat people like adults, have the day when you want to use it.

JaceLancs · 27/04/2022 00:48

I’m on the fence about bank holidays
I work in VCFS and my work load rarely changes so any bank holidays just mean same work spread over 4 days not 5’
week after Easter I had 2 x 7pm finishes and an 8pm so an extra 7 hours

PyongyangKipperbang · 27/04/2022 01:00

BH are one of my top five reasons for not going back in hospitality.

I lost my management job thanks to their reaction to covid, I have been head hunted by that company since and they can fuck off! And I have no intention of going back into that sector. I am now in retail and although that does mean I have to work BH sometimes it really is "sometimes" and not all the damn time. I was threatened with a disciplinary when I left to go home 2 hours after my official finishing time on XMAS DAY because my line manager had fucked up. I left anyway, so I finally saw my kids at 7pm and never did get the bollocking.

Today I saw a guy at work who used to be the BQT for our area (Beer Quality Techincian) who was working a sort of related but very different job. They all got binned off by the same company (MARSTONS) last year when they decided to go over to a contractor, and he has had the same, head hunted to re start a job he was already doing! Was nice to see him and I think we both felt better knowing that we werent the only ones.

Fuck them. I dont actually care if the pubco's fail (MARSTONS) after the way they treated us and yet the CEO's etc still got their bonuses....

Lemonsandlemonade · 27/04/2022 05:56

What I don’t get is is your nursery open or shit on bank holidays?

If open then it’s a normal day for your child. If shut then I don’t get it. What an awful policy to charge for a day that’s shut. That’s quite unusual I would say.

SmellyWellyWoo · 27/04/2022 06:04

Why isn't it that simple to change jobs? Have you tried? A lot of lower level admin type jobs have paid bank holidays, they're not necessarily difficult jobs to get.

I get envious of teachers etc who just work term time but I wouldn't want any of those jobs so I can't really complain.

Flowersandwine12 · 27/04/2022 06:07

As a farmer who was flat out busy over Easter I'm excited for the 4 day weekend in June (I'll get time off from my other job)

I'm cross with or school who decided to have a extra day off mid term because they apparently don't benefit from the extra bank holiday because it is during half term. That threw a spanner in the works for a lot of parents

Ricardothesnowman · 27/04/2022 06:14

It's costing business a fortune.

Where I work all employees get an extra paid day off, but the company is closed so doesn't charge customers.

That's a lot of money to lose for a small business.

We don't need another one in June, how about Halloween time to break up August to Christmas.

Yeah I wish the bank holidays were more spread out. We've just had 2 in April, now there's 1 in May and 2 in June... but none in nearly 4 months from end of August to end of December!

Almost all nurseries charge for bank Holidays but are closed. The logic being that they still have to pay the staff for the bank holiday, but I agree it is shit especially for parents who still have to work the BH, and is unfairly weighted towards people who use nursery on a Monday.

Schools have been told they have to add a day off somewhere if the extra bank holiday falls in half term. Most of our Borough are adding it at the end of half term ( on the monday).

Adding it in the middle of a term is a bit shit though!

Lulu1919 · 27/04/2022 06:24

I'm a TA
The extra Bank Hol is in half term
So no benefit to me or anyone else in education!!

Well I think the UK actually does Bank Holidays rather well.
Where I live we have actually lost 1 bank holiday in the last 30 years. There are religious holidays that are on Thursdays as well as other bank holidays that only apply to certain regions - 1st November is a good example.
In addition, our bank holidays are always taken on the actual day, so if it is a Saturday or Sunday, unless you work in an area that works on those days, there is no day off at all.
This year's UK bank holidays are playing havok with my team planning as most of the team is in London, so from now until the end of June there is barely a week without a bank holiday in one or other of the locations.
