To not want another bank holiday?

Pbbananabagel · 26/04/2022 21:04

Ok hear me out, for people working in 9-5 jobs or industry’s that regularly have weekends off, bank holidays are a great thing. For everyone working in service industries though, it really isn’t. It’s yet another day we pay for childcare that can’t be used (but we have to pay as that’s in the contract), it’s another day of work while everyone else is having a wonderful time. It’s another day where we have to suck it up and deal with people being extra drunk/rude/obnoxious because… bank holiday. I’d really rather he sorted out the tax/universalcredit/benefits system/nhs/midwife crisis/underfunding of schools and social care or just about anything else rather than try to grab some popularity points to cover his rich tax avoiding backside.

I hated BH when I worked in retail. Now I'm in a role where I get them off they are a carrot on the stick to get me through.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 27/04/2022 07:43

i agree though that they are often too busy, the roads are gridlocked

tigger1001 · 27/04/2022 07:45

I work in an office and we don't close for bank holidays apart from Christmas. We get the hours included in our annual leave so can take the time when we want to rather than it being dictated. I much prefer it.

My only gripe is my son goes back to school that week after study leave. He is due back in on the Thursday then off Friday Monday. Seems a bit pointless.

CounsellorTroi · 27/04/2022 07:50

I’m retired so bank holidays are irrelevant to me now, but I really appreciated them when working. They were time off I didn’t have to ask for, knowing there wouldn’t be a big backlog in my inbox when I went back. I do appreciate it’s different in service industries though.

blameitonthecaffeine · 27/04/2022 07:50

YANBU though I get why people with low amounts of holiday like/need them.

I don't work Bank Holidays but still don't like them - it means the curriculum classes I teach on Mondays are always behind the other classes and they always seem to fall at really important times.

If they weren't always Monday but were different days of the week, I'd like them better.

Swayingpalmtrees · 27/04/2022 07:54

This country is bone tired, over worked, over stretched, I can not bring myself to begrudge people a day off!

I don't love them, I hate the pressure of having to 'do something special' when I just want to lie in bed, eat crisps and watch netflix Grin

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 27/04/2022 07:56

I love a bank holiday!

When I worked in retail I got double time, and now I'm self employed I either charge double or close and enjoy a day off with DH Smile

Farmhouse1234 · 27/04/2022 08:07

Yeah the level of drunkenness and number of fights were high on bank holidays, when I worked in a bar. Def the worst day to work.

Neena86 · 27/04/2022 08:08

Luckily the June bank holiday is my weekend off anyway so I don't mind that one. I'm in this coming bank holiday though but I'm on £2.50 an hour extra so I also don't mind it. I'm lucky in the sense that I only need child care for 1 of my 3 kids but my mum does it usually. Working in retail I suppose you have to expect to work weekends/bank holidays.

nannybeach · 27/04/2022 08:13

I was nursing over 40 years, so bank holidays were a normal day, apart from, at least double pay, and an extra weeks annual leave per annum to make up for it. Since retiring, it means I have the DGKs more.

CornishGem1975 · 27/04/2022 07:07

I like a bank holiday but yes this extra one means I'm paying nursery £70 for nothing because it falls on our nursery day and because the other one has moved I still need to try and find childcare for another day I have to work. Giving us two days off at the end of the week doesn't miraculously mean I can pull a babysitter out of my hat.

we know about this one since 2020 , so you have had 2 years to miraculously pull a babysitter out of your hat.

RamonaBadwolf · 26/04/2022 22:48

What’s this about an extra BH? I thought the late May one had just been moved to June, or have I missed something?

It has hasn’t it? At least that’s what me and lots of people in my work have assumed and just moved the day in our calendars. I’d it an extra one?

OfstedOffred · 27/04/2022 08:18

If you are a full time employee you have a statutory right to 28 days paid holiday a year. If you work on bank holidays you get to take holiday another day.

If your childcare provider charges you for days they are closed, choose a different one! My childminder doesnt charge me if she isnt open.

checks gov.uk oh of course, I got all confused. Late May one HAS moved but we also get another day off with it!

Personally I'd scrap all bank holidays except Christmas. Just let me choose the days I take my holiday instead of compelling me to have random Mondays off. Messes up with getting work done too. Obviously increase the minimum leave entitlement to cover those days.

Bank Holidays have cultural significance, there is a reason pretty much every country has some national holidays.

OfstedOffred · 27/04/2022 08:28

The late may one has been moved and an extra one added.

gannett · 27/04/2022 08:31

I haven't had a job that acknowledged bank holidays since 2008. At this time of year I fnd myself constantly squawking "another one???" at DP.

It does strike me that bank holidays could do with being spaced out a lot better.

Burgoo · 27/04/2022 08:35

I work 9-5 and I dislike them. Why? Because I HAVE TO take them off because we are shut. Therefore it gets taken out of my yearly annual leave entitlement and so I get dictated to when I can take those days. Its not a good thing.

Burgoo · 27/04/2022 08:36

@carefullycourageous

The cultural significance seems to be to get pissed. ha

BashfulClam · 27/04/2022 08:39

Well yes, this is Britain! But also Easter is a family time for many, IMO.

Bank Holidays are a break and I would be sad to see them go.

Branleuse · 27/04/2022 08:55

Nothing is going to be convenient for everyone surely. Not everyone cares about xmas or easter. Some people really like the Mayday one. Some people would prefer one for the end of Ramadan etc. What is the august bank holiday for??
I couldnt give a shiny shit about the queens jubilee, but plenty of people appreciate a bank holiday

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 27/04/2022 08:57

My son works part-time in hospitality while at uni. He loves public holidays as here in Oz he gets 250% of his usual pay rate, so over Easter he was on over $50 an hour! I was nearly tempted to ask if they needed any extra staff. Grin

Idontgiveashitanymore · 27/04/2022 09:06

Too many holidays and bank holidays, I lose money and shifts because of these.
