Mum thinks this dress isn't right for wedding

Going to a wedding in a couple weeks. Saw a gorgeous bardot dress, loved it, fiance loved it so ordered it and I love it in real life too. However I sent a pic to my mum who just texted back "I don't like it for a wedding" then didn't say why or anymore? Am I breaking some kind of etiquette? Clueless about these things. Most weddings I've been too I've been the bridesmaid or the bride and don't have a clue how guests dressed. I do remember a wedding a few years back where I wore a red polka dot dress. Don't know if that was breaking any etiquette rules. I do believe that mother likes that dress though! I will attach a pic of the dress!

I mean, think of what you'd wear on your feet. You'd wear sandals with a summery casual dress like that, which again isn't appropriate for a wedding or church.

Sandals aren’t appropriate?? Just when I thought this thread couldn’t get any more ridiculous.

Those people who would judge you for wearing this dress (or, omg, sandals) need to take a good look at themselves.

It shouldn't be such a huge deal to find a simple dress to wear to a wedding.

A shift or sheath dress in a nice fabric and cut always works.

It really isn't anything goes. You wouldn't wear scuba gear to your office job or a silk dress and heels to fight fires.

Your mother is right.

Gosh talk about a slow news day if they have done that. I've picked another dress now. I don't think I dare to post a picture on here though, lol!

Please show us! Totally agree, not for a wedding as it looks like a beach cover up!

SmallPrawnEnergy · 27/04/2022 07:20

Do people even read? She’s picked other dress you can get off your fucking soapboxes now.

Terven · 27/04/2022 07:25

Is this a thing in the US to have shoulders covered in church? Never heard that before. It’s common here, for example, see Meghan’s wedding dress,

It's certainly a thing in catholic Churches. Have you ever visited the Vatican or Sagrada Familia? They won't let you inside if your shoulders are uncovered, they make a fortune selling scarves to tourists who want to do the tours but are wearing shoulderless dresses and tops

AryaStarkWolf · 27/04/2022 10:15

@Terven saying that though, I'm Irish so obviously most of the churches here are catholic and I doubt anyone would stop you entering a church for that reason even if it isn't good etiquette, I've certainly been at many weddings where the bride and guests have been open shouldered

Have you never travelled anywhere outside the UK? When visiting places of worship its almost a ubiquitous request that shoulders are covered, both in Europe and the rest of the world

Annoyedandirritated · 27/04/2022 10:26

Far too casual, more like a beach cover up

Who pissed on your chips?

Terven · 27/04/2022 10:43

Seriously, I had no idea. I’m Swedish living in the UK and traveled all over the world. Swedish people are notoriously unreligious so maybe that’s it? 🤷‍♀️

BluntlySpeaking · 27/04/2022 11:07

Now that I've seen it - hell no. Even off-the-shoulder but midi length, and in a dressier fabric, maybe. But this beach dress? No. Use the Leo guide: "Always overdress"!

Madamum18 · 27/04/2022 17:35

I think the bardot dress was fie!

Vanderama · 27/04/2022 18:04

Depends on where the wedding is. Church or posh get or then yes, it's a bit casual. You'd definitely need a wrap or jacket to cover your shoulders for the formal ceremony and maybe
a hat or fascinate as well.

But if it's a registry office do and pub or cheaper venue afterwards it'll be fine. Do you know any other people attending. Find out what they're wearing.

Bunpea · 27/04/2022 18:12

It’s too casual and too revealing IMO.

AuntMargo · 27/04/2022 18:16

Thats not a wedding guest dress, its a beach, festival, bbq dress

Bobbins36 · 27/04/2022 18:25

Not for a wedding. Holiday/beach yes.

twinmum2007 · 27/04/2022 18:27

Lovely dress but not really suitable for a wedding unless it's one of those flip-flops on the beach kind of deals.
If it were a long dress it might be just about OK, but otherwise I'm.with your mother on this one. Sorry.

April506 · 27/04/2022 18:28

It will be lovely for the disco after party. Lovely and cool to dance the night away.

lindyloo57 · 27/04/2022 18:29

To me it looks great for a holiday dress, and as someone else said, shoulders should be covered in a church

Rollergirl999 · 27/04/2022 18:33

Ok for the beach not for church

Debbacat6 · 27/04/2022 18:37

It looks like a poolside dress that you might get changed under
Def not a wedding look not even if it's an informal one
Looks tacky and a bit cheap.
Shoulders should be covered in church.
