Mum thinks this dress isn't right for wedding

Going to a wedding in a couple weeks. Saw a gorgeous bardot dress, loved it, fiance loved it so ordered it and I love it in real life too. However I sent a pic to my mum who just texted back "I don't like it for a wedding" then didn't say why or anymore? Am I breaking some kind of etiquette? Clueless about these things. Most weddings I've been too I've been the bridesmaid or the bride and don't have a clue how guests dressed. I do remember a wedding a few years back where I wore a red polka dot dress. Don't know if that was breaking any etiquette rules. I do believe that mother likes that dress though! I will attach a pic of the dress!

Truth is that yes, there will likely be people at the wedding who will judge you for wearing that. 🤷‍♀️

Stravaig · 26/04/2022 10:27

If you're a teenager and it's a beach wedding at a package holiday resort. Otherwise no!

RowanAlong · 26/04/2022 10:27

It’s a beach dress. Too short and too casual

RowanAlong · 26/04/2022 10:31

It’s too casual and too revealing (shoulders and lots of leg) for a wedding, where it’s not about eyes on you. Eyes are meant to be on the bride, so you dress a bit more covered up, for example, shoulders out but a longer skirt, or short dress but higher neck/longer sleeved. Hth

Finding a dress that feels ‘you’ is ok, but eyes are meant to be on the bride, so you dress a bit more covered up, for example, shoulders out but a longer skirt, or short dress but higher neck/longer sleeved. Looks like something to wear round the pool or to the beach on holidays.

Not wedding guest attire at all.

Your mum is right. It's a cheap beach cover-up, I wouldn't even wear it down to the pub let alone a wedding. I'm sure there are a million dresses you could find that you would wear again but would be suitable for a wedding. Maybe post on Style and Beauty and get some suggestions

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/04/2022 10:45

It would have been fine at a very informal wedding like dd had, but to me it does look very little-girly, so probably more suited IMO to a younger teen, not a grown woman.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 26/04/2022 10:45

I also think very beachy holiday vibe.

Not for a wedding.

Surely you can find something more appropriate that is also "you"?

You can def dress to suit your tastes @confusedmummy123 but you asked and the consensus seems to be that this dress is not right for a wedding guest.

I’m seeing this frock accessorised with flip flops and a fag. Is that the vibe you are going for?

Rosehugger · 26/04/2022 10:53

It's a bit short, but then I'm in my mid-forties. When I was twenty years younger I could have got away with this sort of thing at a wedding. If you like it, go for it.

mochimoons · 26/04/2022 10:54

It's very short and casual for a wedding so I do agree with your mum sorry! It's a lovely dress for casual things though!

Rosehugger · 26/04/2022 10:58

If you like off the shoulder dresses, you could probably get away with something like this for a summer wedding. It's just a bit longer and less beachy.

@Rosehugger that dress is lovely, but IMO could be straying into "taking attention away from the bride" territory, especially if OP is gorgeous and the bride is more average.

CounsellorTroi · 26/04/2022 11:02

I’m not sure about thigh split dresses at weddings either. Bit look-at-meeee.

If Boris is a guest I think he might find that distracting.

Toddlerteaplease · 26/04/2022 11:07

Definitely not suitable for a church wedding!

Tilltheend99 · 26/04/2022 11:07

Your thread has blown up op!

Your point about wearing something you would reuse is an important one. With that in mind, you could dress this up for a wedding by getting a pink shawl to cover up your shoulders, wearing a fascinator and some tights.

Rosehugger · 26/04/2022 11:09

If the OP is gorgeous, she will get lots of attention if she wore a cloth sack. I imagine the dress can be buttoned or pinned down further than the model is wearing it. There is no point suggesting some sisterwife cover up number for if the OP likes something a bit eye catching, pretty and young.

PlayGIBluff · 26/04/2022 11:10

I think @confusedmummy123 is wearing the dress regardless. Your mother didn’t need to elaborate - anyone with eyes can see it’s a totally unsuitable dress for a wedding. Definitely keep it though as it’s lovely for a day at the beach or sunny day in a beer garden.

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/04/2022 11:10

I’m not a very formal person but I do agree with most people. Pretty but for the beach.
