AIBU to want to know the truth about this?

MNettersForNoahAndFiona · 25/04/2022 14:39

Noah Donohoe was an intelligent, smart, kind and gentle boy. He was 14 years old, the only child of Fiona Donohoe and her everything.

On 21st June 2020, a bright sunny day and as lockdown had eased, Noah set off on his bike to meet up with his two friends to do some schoolwork together, but never reached his destination. Instead, Noah's body was found 6 days later in a storm-drain, naked, in a part of his home city he did not know.

On the day Noah was found, before Noah was formally identified, the Police did a media release stating that there was ‘No Foul Play’ involved. If the police are so sure that ‘No Foul Play’ was involved and that they will not be found wanting under scrutiny, why are they now trying to stop Noah’s mother and her legal team getting access to four files of information on Noah’s investigation?

The Police have applied for a ‘Public Interest Immunity’ certificate, which, if granted, means they can hide four key files in the investigation. Such a certificate is only used in exceptional circumstances and rarely used in the case of a missing child. This certificate has been brought into play in cases where Police intelligence, informers or paramilitaries are involved.

Noah’s mummy has, from the very start of Noah being missing, believed that the police did not use all their resources in finding Noah. This was confirmed when it emerged they had not paid anyone overtime while investigating his death. They did little, if any, forensics and any suspects that were brought to their attention were dismissed as not relevant.

Noah's mummy believes that someone harmed Noah and that there have been serious and repeated failings in the Police investigation of his death. She will never get to the truth and Justice for Noah if she does not get all the information. These four files are vital to get the truth she desperately needs, to find out what really happened to her precious son.

This is a podcast with Noah's mother. It is a hard watch and so a trigger warning may be needed before watching:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRWsr3giWH8

After watching the podcast and the more I get to know, the more questions and doubts I have, and the more difficult it is to believe the police claim of 'No Foul Play'. Noah's death is being treated as a coroner's investigation and the police are not actively pursuing any person or persons in relation to it. Given the lack of a proper investigation into Noah's disappearance and death by the police and their application to keep their files secret, it is difficult to have any confidence in them. In fact, this has been described as their 'Stephen Lawrence moment'. Add to this that Noah's mother and auntie have received telephone threats, are trolled daily online and posters of Noah have been defaced - his face deliberately cut out of them. My own view is that the files must be released and a new and independent investigation begun.

As a parent, a member of the public and a long-standing Mumsnetter, I want to know the truth about what happened to Noah. Even more importantly, I want his mother Fiona to get the truth she needs to be allowed to grieve properly for her son, for Noah to get the justice he truly deserves, for all other children to be safe in the future and to place transparency and accountability where it should rightly be.

This is an earlier thread about Noah, nearly full and so about to close to new posts, but with useful links to newspaper articles and also to a petition in support of his mother:

Are people under the impression they have to live in Ireland to sign

I hope not. Any adult from anywhere can sign the Change petition, as I understand it. Noah was a UK and Irish citizen and he could be absolutely anybody's son, nephew, brother. grandson, cousin, neighbour or friend.

Yes, Noah really was a beautiful boy, inside and out, and a son his mummy can be very, very proud of.

There isn't enough mainstream media coverage, that's for sure. It is even difficult to get it seen on here.

People are strange.. maybe it needs to be said... anyone can sign it.... or do they not care... because it happened in Ireland... and therefore doesn't affect them?

Yes it's almost like 'someone ' wants it to be kept out of the public eye.

A number of 'someones' certainly do. Nothing to see here. Trust us. Go away Fiona and grieve quietly.

Well that’s never going to happen. They are underestimating a mothers love if they think Fiona is going away.

If people can - rightly - care about children and mothers from Ukraine and other places, surely they care about a British/Irish/Northern Irish child and mother too?

Im glad you read the date of the next hearing has been changed, although it should never have been set for the original date knowing the distress it would cause.

Not for the first time with dates. They have made a habit of it.

That is a beautiful photograph of Noah and Fiona. They look so happy together, absolutely radiant. It is crystal clear they always loved each other’s company.

I am sure more people would sign the petition if they only knew Noah and Fiona’s story. So many people have been horrified to hear it and shocked that they have never known of it before.

Just knowing the truth about the death of her child should not have to be fought for like this, and especially not for nearly two years and counting.

No, they are not and neither are their supporters.

What a heavy burden for Fiona and her sister Niamh to carry though every single day for 22 months, on top of their grief.

And good to see the numbers signing the petition increasing. Thank you for the links and keeping us informed OP.

Noah 💙

305,531 signatures at the moment, which is good, but the numbers really need to keep rising to 500k so that the decision makers know that the public are watching what they do. It also helps to support Fiona and Niamh, and to remind 'those with information about Noah's disappearance and death' that the public are watching them too.

Yes. Their plan was that, when Noah grew up and had a family of his own, he would have a granny flat at his house so that Fiona could live with them and help look after the children. He wanted to be a doctor. He would have been sitting his GCSEs.

I think you're right. Some people have not heard about Noah at all. Some people heard at the time that he had gone missing and then that his body had been found. Far, far less people know that, nearly 2 years later, Fiona has understandably no confidence left in the police and coronial investigations, is still waiting to know the truth about exactly when, why and how Noah died, and that an application has been made by the police to keep 508 pages of information about it secret. I think most people, on knowing about all this, would feel a great sense of unease, even outrage, and have many questions. People should feel fear too, because if things don't change now, it will happen to more children.

As with many of these cases, the problem comes down to communication and loss of trust.

If Fiona had seen the police take the missing person report seriously, put on a proper hunt, pull CCTV. If they had taken time to investigate, followed up leads, questioned people when the opportunity first arose.... if she KNEW that everything was done, and his death was then declared a tragic accident, then someone sitting down with her and telling her these files existed, but that they couldn't be made public to protect informants/ undercover officers (which may very well be the reason) would very likely have been accepted.

But when you've been failed over and over again in the most painful days of your life then why would you believe that it's anything other than the police at best covering their incompetence, at worst covering up a horrendous crime. 💙💙💙
