TV on the wall

To make more space in our living room I want to put our TV on the wall above our fireplace (Victorian style house with tallish fireplace/wall height).

DH hates the idea as he think we'll be 'looking up' and a TV should be eye height when we're sitting on the sofa. I just don't think it's an issue if it's slightly higher.

AIBU to want to do this?

Mines on the wall and I don't feel I'm looking up. But best thing I've done

I came home a few years ago to find my husband had put our TV on the wall. He couldn’t understand why I demanded he put it back where it had been. I tried watching it but after 30 minutes my neck was in agony. I’m short he is tall.

Theoldwrinkley · 22/04/2022 18:38

We put TV on wall above fireplace for exactly this reason. It lasted a week before my neck pain got too bad to tolerate. Keep it at rye level.

Theoldwrinkley · 22/04/2022 18:38

Or even 'eye' level.

Whatsthestoryboringglory · 22/04/2022 18:40

Ours is on the wall above the fireplace and it’s no issue. Our sofa is probably about 4m away from the fireplace so as long as you aren’t really close you won’t notice, I would think.

Qwill · 22/04/2022 18:41

Personally I really hate tvs on the wall. I hate the aesthetic and it’s an awkward angle.

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 22/04/2022 18:45

Ours is the same, I don't mind it at all but dh hates it!

It's a no from me... just looks weird and becomes even more imposing. A telly is hardly framed art, not exactly attractive to look at so definitely wouldn't want it above my fireplace in a Victorian home with high ceilings. What a travesty.

Not art, but ours looks like a painting when it's off. The screen changes to really beautiful images. We have the same set up, above the fireplace with high ceilings and it looks very nice. I didn't even notice that we were looking up.

Limoux · 22/04/2022 19:02

Its a style
Generally not one deployed by people with Victorian fireplaces
It may render the fireplace unusable

Courante · 22/04/2022 19:04

We've got a TV on the wall in two other reception rooms but not above a fireplace - in one it is above a sideboard and in the other above a sofa. In the main sitting room we did think about putting it above the fireplace but thought is would look odd/be too high up so we stuck with it on a TV stand/cabinet.

Dougieowner · 22/04/2022 19:09

Another no from me.
In both our rooms the TV is a decent distance from the sofa but there is no way we would want the TV any higher than a cabinet provides.
Whenever I see a TV "high" on a wall I realise how much I would hate it in our house.

SunshineAndFizz · 22/04/2022 19:10

Should also maybe add another reason I want to do this is because we're knocking through between the dining room and kitchen, so we'll have open plan living and could view the TV better when cooking etc

TV's should be at eye level IMO.

UhtredsLatestPaganHussy · 22/04/2022 19:11

I think a TV above fireplace is my No.1 least favourite decor trend.*

Looks awful, as though you're in a hotel lounge, and yes, the angle is all wrong for TV viewing.

*2nd is those massive wall clocks that look like they belong in a railway station

And he's right re. the angle. Awkward way to watch television. If a TV has to be on a wall it should be

UhtredsLatestPaganHussy · 22/04/2022 19:12

My post got a bit mangled there. Basically it's a 'non' from me!

Whatsthestoryboringglory · 22/04/2022 19:14

Should add; ours is a Victoria terrace, and we’ve got a mirror tv in an antique frame so when it isn’t on it blends seamlessly with the decor. Just a looks like an antique mirror over the fireplace.

No hideous room dominating monstrosities in sight!

Meredusoleil · 22/04/2022 19:14

Our TV is above our fireplace (not a Victorian house) and we have it tilted down slightly so it doesn't feel too high to look at.

AgentProvocateur · 22/04/2022 19:14

TVs on the wall are awful. Especially one that’s too high.

IngeD · 22/04/2022 19:17

Ours is above the fireplace
but behind an antique mirror
if the tv is off, it looks like a mirror
if it’s on, you just watch tv
best thing we have ever done

MaudieandMe · 22/04/2022 19:19

I have my TV on the wall although not above a fireplace so it's about 4ft off the floor. If you get a hinged bracket, you can swivel and tilt the TV to suit your sitting position.

I sew and made a loose cover for it that has a big colourful elephant in the centre and we put the cover over the TV when we switch the tv off in the evening.

Quite a few people have seen the cover and assumed it's some sort of Art installation not realising it's hiding the TV. 😂

profilehopper · 22/04/2022 19:20

Another with Tv above fireplace on wall in living room, with a decent wall bracket you can tilt turn and adjust, its perfect angled slightly down. We have had it like that for the past 12 years no issues at all.

Hbh17 · 22/04/2022 19:22

Aesthetically, TVs on the wall look horrible - like a pub or cheap hotel. But then, I have always refused to even have a TV in my living room at all, because they never look good.

BigFatLiar · 22/04/2022 19:23

I'd be worrying that the weight could make it come of the wall or the heat from the fire could damage it.

tvismuttsnutts · 22/04/2022 19:26

We have a mirror tv in an old house above the fireplace. It isn’t too high, we don’t get neck ache and when it’s switched off you can’t even tell we have a tv. Which I love.

Massively outing picture attached 😁
