TV on the wall

SunshineAndFizz · 22/04/2022 18:31

To make more space in our living room I want to put our TV on the wall above our fireplace (Victorian style house with tallish fireplace/wall height).

DH hates the idea as he think we'll be 'looking up' and a TV should be eye height when we're sitting on the sofa. I just don't think it's an issue if it's slightly higher.

AIBU to want to do this?

I like the way it looks. I think it looks clean and finished somehow. But then I have a massive wall clock and love that so... 🤷🏻‍♀️

PatientlyWaiting21 · 22/04/2022 19:31

Ours is on the wall, no neck pain, how close are you lot sitting to your tv that you need to look up?!

Aprilx · 22/04/2022 19:38

I agree with your husband, TV on wall is horrible and I would be worried about neck pain.

Whiskeypowers · 22/04/2022 19:38

Unless your room is enormous, your tv is enormous and you have installed a tv on the wall above a functioning fireplace in such a way as to avoid heat damage to said tv then I wouldn’t do it

in most average living too a wall mounted tv would give you neck ache

trailrunner85 · 22/04/2022 19:42

TVs look awful on the wall. Yes, even those "disguised" as massive gilded mirrors. And definitely in a Victorian terrace where it wouldn't fit with the style of the room at all.

If it's above a fireplace you'll also be looking slightly up, as pps have said. Which is no good for your eyes or your neck.

Finally, the pp who said putting the tv on the wall was the "best thing we ever did"... WOW. Just wow. I hope that's an exaggeration!

Pleiades2020 · 22/04/2022 19:44

You could try putting a painting on the mantlepiece and "watch" it for half an hour or so to see how it feels. If you use the fireplace smoke from the fire could maybe damage the tv.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 22/04/2022 19:44

Is it a wall you share with a neighbour? The sound of TVs can travel through walls and really piss off your neighbours.

Ours is above the fireplace
but behind an antique mirror
if the tv is off, it looks like a mirror
if it’s on, you just watch tv
best thing we have ever done

Thats is almost impossible to comprehend how awful it is

Words fail me

We have a mirror tv in an old house above the fireplace. It isn’t too high, we don’t get neck ache and when it’s switched off you can’t even tell we have a tv. Which I love.

Massively outing picture attached 😁

Again- so awful it is hard to describe

new money would be polite- there are worse terms

leotardrock · 22/04/2022 19:49

Mines on the wall, not over a fireplace but most fittings tilt - I don't have to crane my neck to watch ours!

New money is not polite.

TV nailed to the wall?
Above a fireplace??

<shudder>

edgeware · 22/04/2022 19:53

@tvismuttsnutts I think it looks lovely. Some miserable snobs on here. New money, good god, go back to 1928 and have a drink.

PinkiOcelot · 22/04/2022 19:53

God some of the responses on here are so rude!

DH wanted out telly on the wall and I didn’t. Didn’t like it. However, he won and the telly is on the wall and I must admit I like it. It’s above the fire place but not a used fire. It’s freed up a good space in the corner and I have a cabinet there that I could never have had before.

UhtredsLatestPaganHussy · 22/04/2022 19:56

In a small room it can be a good space saving idea to put the TV on the wall, but at normal eye height. Not looming over everyone.

PlumAndPewter · 22/04/2022 20:00

Love our TV on the wall, it’s not above a fireplace though so we have it at a comfortable height. It was purely a practical decision as putting it on the wall gave the kids more space to play, and my house is for living in not just to look pretty.

My goodness though, this thread has brought out some seriously vile snobs! Commenting on lack of class while demonstrating their own in all its ill-mannered glory!

Popopopo · 22/04/2022 20:03

The strength of feeling here over where people put their TVs is hilarious 😂 who gives a shit. I would put a pod cast on some headphones so you have something to so and try staring at the spot a while and see if it hurts your neck. It probably depends on how far away you are, how high it is etc etc

Something to do*

Wow is that even a thing…?! I love that.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 22/04/2022 20:06

This is one of my biggest bugbears. Tv should be at eye line height, above a fireplace is ridiculous. On the wall is fine - just at eye height!

I also have high ceilings but that’s not got anything to do with how high I can mount the tv - I want to watch it comfortably not make sure it’s equidistant between the ceiling and the floor.

tvismuttsnutts · 22/04/2022 20:07

codeVeronica · 22/04/2022 19:51

New money is not polite.

But then that poster is exceptionally rude and despite turning their nose up at “new money” is showing their complete lack of any class 😁 so I’m not in the slightest bit interested in their opinion.

Justkeeppedaling · 22/04/2022 20:07

It's a no from me too, for all the reasons already listed.

HighInPolyunsaturates · 22/04/2022 20:07

Yeah I think the mirror thing is pretty cool. I would definitely spend my new money on that, if I had it😀

Chooksnroses · 22/04/2022 20:07

I hate TVs on the wall as much as I hate solar panels. And I REALLY hate solar panels.
