TV on the wall

SunshineAndFizz · 22/04/2022 18:31

To make more space in our living room I want to put our TV on the wall above our fireplace (Victorian style house with tallish fireplace/wall height).

DH hates the idea as he think we'll be 'looking up' and a TV should be eye height when we're sitting on the sofa. I just don't think it's an issue if it's slightly higher.

AIBU to want to do this?

I’m paying good money for a holiday, I want it to be to my taste and feel relaxed.

I can't remember what the TV was like, but once came across a holiday cottage (on a website, I most definitely didn't go there) witht the bedroom dominated by a life size mocel of Elvis Presley😮

I don't like TVs on walls personally - but as PP has said, do consider the noise if its a party wall.

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 23/04/2022 13:19

Ours is on the wall. On a bracket that swings back flat to the wall when we aren't watching it.

It is at eye height and is by far better there for both of us to see clearly than any other space.

Sometimes TV brackets are the only sensible solution.

Kudos.
Thats the full out 'spoons experience.

I'm guessing that if I knew what you meant that would be insulting.

Hey ho!

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 23/04/2022 15:22

Not a fan of TVs over the fireplace. Think it looks a bit tacky. So wouldn't choose to do it in my own home.

But glad to see the reliable MN hyperbole firmly in place. 'I wouldn't even rent a holiday home with a wall mounted TV because I find them so offensive'.

You see it on every subject. 'I loathe toilet brushes so much that I not only banned them from my house but I went NC with my sister because she refused to give hers up'.

Hugasauras · 23/04/2022 15:49

@SamphirethePogoingStickerist Do you have a line of pensioners outside your house at 9am waiting to come in for a beer? Is your toilet down 20 twisting staircases and through a magic portal? Is Tuesday curry night? If not, rest easy - you do not live in a Wetherspoons as PP suggested!

I never knew TVs on walls were so controversial! I personally think ones on cabinets make a room look cluttered and take up space that could be better used, but I've never equated it with 'class', 'old money' or anything else. I figure some people just prefer it and that's fine.

MiseryWIthAStent · 23/04/2022 15:50

It always looks tacky I think. I don't know why I think it, but I do.

Whatsthestoryboringglory · 23/04/2022 16:03

Not gonna post a picture of ours, but our tv was one of these types and I think (I realise not everyone agrees which is fine!) they can look brilliant.

I really don’t like tvs above a fireplace. Definitely eye level for me.

Id love to see the living rooms and TV`s of all the people posting on MN saying its tacky, like a chav, like Weatherspoon's, looks cheap, looks like a council house, has no taste, I would not have a holiday cottage if one was there. After all they must live in designer houses with no tv and bookcases on every wall.

cigarettesNalcohol · 22/04/2022 18:48

It's a no from me... just looks weird and becomes even more imposing. A telly is hardly framed art, not exactly attractive to look at so definitely wouldn't want it above my fireplace in a Victorian home with high ceilings. What a travesty.

I agree, hate TVs on the wall, I am afraid I judge anyone who does this. Just awful!

TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo · 23/04/2022 16:58

Ours is in a stand in the corner and for the size of the TV (65inch) it doesn't really take up that much room.

Kids are teens now so no worries about them knocking it over... it's just the cats we need to keep an eye on!

DH bought some anchors from amazon so it can't be knocked over.

We have our TV on the wall, but it isn't above a fireplace and we were therefore able to have it lower. We don't have it at eye level but it's fine in our living space as there is a 3m gap between the TV and the sofa. It is a great space saver and keeps it away from little hands! Is there anywhere else you could put it on a wall after the reno work as a compromise?

Although, I did insist on having the wires hidden in the wall as I think wires dangling down from a TV look horrible.

user1471517095 · 23/04/2022 18:23

When I got my new smart TV delivered I asked the man from Currys about putting it on the Chimney breast. It was a firm no from him as it is a working fire and it would damage the internal workings.

No- it was meant to be taking the piss out of the earlier wetherpoons comments- not yours.

GodSaveTheQueen2022 · 23/04/2022 18:28

I thought wetherspoons didnt have TVs- like they dont have music or dogs?

Sux2buthen · 23/04/2022 18:38

Oh my god do people in real life say things like 'new money' GrinGrin

tuliplover · 23/04/2022 20:45

I have our v above the fireplace. I'd rather not but it's bigger than the alcoves either side (it's just a 50" but room is small). It's a Samsung Frame TV so it can look like a painting when on stand by.
It is higher than I'd normally have it but not so high as to feel like a strain. We're used to it now.

I’m pretty confident people don’t say that or half of the things they’ve said on here in real life. The anonymity of the internet allows for people to say some extreme stuff they wouldn’t say in person.

Conversely, if they do use phrases like that in real life, I’ve probably walked past them in Kensington shouting “Digby! Digby darling come back” and had to look round and check if it’s a dog or a child they’re attempting to control.

tvismuttsnutts · 23/04/2022 21:16

Although now I’ve said that, I’m reading all those comments in the voice of Patsy from Ab Fab and I’m loving it 😂

5128gap · 23/04/2022 21:28

Can never understand the thinking that its particularly tasteless to put tvs above VICTORIAN fireplaces. Round here Victorian houses are a dime a dozen, and people arrange their possessions in them to suit their lifestyles. Front rooms can be small, most people watch TV (even those who don't like to admit it) so it's a practical solution.

Furries · 24/04/2022 02:47

tvismuttsnutts · 22/04/2022 19:26

We have a mirror tv in an old house above the fireplace. It isn’t too high, we don’t get neck ache and when it’s switched off you can’t even tell we have a tv. Which I love.

Massively outing picture attached 😁

Not posting a photo yet, as wiring needs to be finished.

But my new TV is due to your post a while ago elsewhere. Had never heard of them before. I’m really happy with the end result - am in an old cottage, so the mirror frame I chose fits in with the surroundings, rather than a large modern tv dominating the space.

Have seen numerous threads where posters are adamant (rude) about how tacky a tv on the wall/above the fireplace is! I’m loving how mine looks (plus didn’t realise how picture quality had improved, my old plasma was around 15 years old).

I’m not a fan of tv’s on/in cabinets. Takes up more floor space, which I prefer to keep clear. But that’s my preference, I wouldn’t be as rude as some on here if that’s what someone prefers for their house.

After at least 15 years of tv above fireplace, I’m still not in need of a neck brace.

@Furries I think I remember, was it you who started the original thread back then? I replied under a previous name. Would be great to see it once you’ve got it looking tidy!

Ah ha! Thanks.

No, none of that. Just uneven walls and floors, odd shaped rooms and a decision to put the telly where it could be seen without taking up floor space.

I had absolutely no idea that using a bracket and removing the piece of furniture the telly used to stand on was so controversial.

But then again, this is MN, were a toilet brush is equally contentious 🙂
