TV on the wall

SunshineAndFizz · 22/04/2022 18:31

To make more space in our living room I want to put our TV on the wall above our fireplace (Victorian style house with tallish fireplace/wall height).

DH hates the idea as he think we'll be 'looking up' and a TV should be eye height when we're sitting on the sofa. I just don't think it's an issue if it's slightly higher.

AIBU to want to do this?

Its not snobby

They look awful. It isnt a design success.

Well clearly the poster who posted the photo likes it, so it is.

profilehopper · 22/04/2022 20:09

Haha 😂 some alot of replies on here, sound like deranged snobs, trying to hard to impress but making there selves look like total idiots.

Yes believe it or not walls have strength to holdup a TV 😂, how do you think they support the house. Fires radiate heat outwards not directly upwards, I must admit I have not seen a wall mounted TV melt or home owners with neck braces. Get a grip 🙄

FrancescaContini · 22/04/2022 20:11

Looks really naff. Don’t do it.

tvismuttsnutts · 22/04/2022 20:12

@Bagelsandbrie thanks! Me too 😁

@edgeware That made me laugh thank you!

It’s obviously a personal choice. I’d prefer not to have a tv, DP wanted one, we both wanted it hidden.

I feel this is as controversial as people owning a toilet brush or not by Mumsnet standards!!!

Oncemoreforluck · 22/04/2022 20:14

I won’t even book a holiday cottage if the tv is on the wall…..

no idea if this is serious or not!

goodwinter · 22/04/2022 20:19

Reminds me of the "TV too high" subreddit: www.reddit.com/r/TVTooHigh

It'll be super uncomfortable!

I also really don't like the look of wall mounted TVs, but of course that's personal taste.

Qwill · 22/04/2022 20:20

@Oncemoreforluck

😂Same!! If I’m paying good money for a holiday, I want it to be to my taste and feel relaxed. I couldn’t do that with (completely my personal opinion), an eyesore like that.

Not sure why not liking a tv on a wall makes you a snob though. Surely it’s just personal taste. If you’re asking for opinions, then you can’t really complain if people have different ones to you. There are a lot of things I love that many would hate.

lakeswimmer · 22/04/2022 20:21

TVs look awful wherever they are to be fair but they're no better mounted on a wall. The radical solution is just get rid entirely. We haven't had one for years and have survived.

I agree with PP about the giant clock trend. We're house hunting at the moment so spending more time than usual on Rightmove. They're everywhere.

tvismuttsnutts · 22/04/2022 20:25

@Qwill Absolutely, the world would be a very dull place if we all liked the same thing. OP has asked for opinions and had plenty of them!

I think the TV on the wall thing is a veiled class thing though; several people I know who have tvs on walls have half-apologised when I visited and a few “it’s a bit council estate sorry but very practical” sort of comments been made. Like there’s something wrong with council estates. Or practicality.

Hont1986 · 22/04/2022 20:29

TV above a fireplace always looks bad. He's right.

Why does not liking a tv disguised as a mirror make you a snob?

Sounds like reverse snobbery from you !

Of course you can survive without a TV, but some people actually enjoy watching them...

profilehopper · 22/04/2022 20:33

@GodSaveTheQueen2022 where in my post did I mentioned disgusting TVs as mirrors? I think you either need to got to spec savers or learn to read 🙄

WindyKnickers · 22/04/2022 20:33

Not to my taste aesthetically and I agree with your DP that it should be at eye level. Buy you aren't unreasonable if that's the actual question.

No, using loads of emojis in your writing makes you look like a total idiot. Expressing a preference for where your TV is placed is responding to the OPs question

Greatoutdoors · 22/04/2022 20:38

I agree with your husband. TVs should be eye level. I don’t really like them above a fireplace either.

profilehopper · 22/04/2022 20:39

@WindyKnickers aww personal attacks on a forum 🤔, because you don't agree who looks like an idiot now 😉

Hugasauras · 22/04/2022 20:39

Ours are all wall mounted! Young children plus animals means that them sitting at a reachable level is dicing with disaster! Never had any neck pain etc. and I prefer to have more usable floor space, plus all the cables are hidden in our walls which is also good for aforementioned small people and critters!

Sandra2010 · 22/04/2022 20:39

IngeD · 22/04/2022 19:17

Ours is above the fireplace
but behind an antique mirror
if the tv is off, it looks like a mirror
if it’s on, you just watch tv
best thing we have ever done

www.overmantels.co.uk/tv-mirrors/

What sorcery is this??? I've never even heard of these before! They're fab though, definitely a good solution to the problem of aesthetics.

stiritwithaknife · 22/04/2022 20:40

DP also absolutely hates tvs above fireplaces. It's pretty much his only interior decorating bugbear, so I don't push it to preserve the peace.

Is there anywhere else you can place it to still view it from other rooms? Is there a way to get a small screen for kitchen viewing instead? For example, a mounted tablet?

PortalooSunset · 22/04/2022 20:41

I wouldn't, it wouldn't be comfortable for me to watch at that height. Well, not unless I raised the sofa by a foot or so!

Hugasauras · 22/04/2022 20:43

And yes you can get tilt and angle brackets that let you change TV orientation. Our kitchen one can do all sorts of whacky things if you want to view it from various places!

PortalooSunset · 22/04/2022 20:44

I use my tablet in the kitchen. Even if we were fully open plan I wouldn't be watching a telly in the lounge from the kitchen. not that I can actually watch our telly because it's always attached to dc's xbox anyway

Sandra2010 · 22/04/2022 20:44

Compromise? On a wall so out of the way, but not above the fireplace? Basically at the height it would be on a TV unit. Just putting forth ideas.
