TV on the wall

SunshineAndFizz · 22/04/2022 18:31

To make more space in our living room I want to put our TV on the wall above our fireplace (Victorian style house with tallish fireplace/wall height).

DH hates the idea as he think we'll be 'looking up' and a TV should be eye height when we're sitting on the sofa. I just don't think it's an issue if it's slightly higher.

AIBU to want to do this?

I hate TVs on the wall as much as I hate solar panels. And I REALLY hate solar panels.

We have lots of TVs, all on the wall at eye level. And we have a lot of solar panels. 😂

OP, I can understand your husbands concerns about looking up if you put it above the fireplace and I do agree with him. But my friend did it and said they all got used to it very quickly,

Whatsthestoryboringglory · 22/04/2022 20:45

A previous posters idea about a tablet in the kitchen is a good idea; DP likes to sit his iPad on the window while he cooks so he can watch tv.

Mummadeze · 22/04/2022 20:50

I think TVs on walls look modern and absolutely fine. My house is beautifully designed and the wall mounted (white) TV looks great.

TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo · 22/04/2022 20:53

I wanted ours on the wall but DH vetoed. He is a TV salesman in a well known store and said TV should always be in your eyeline.

TheWitchersWife · 22/04/2022 20:57

Mines on the wall so my 2 and 4 year old are constantly touching it and pushing it.
But we have long living room and sit quite far back from it for its more moving your eyes up a little bit.
Its not a front row of the cinema feeling. I suppose it depends on how high you want it and how big your living room is.
FIL has his very high on the wall and a very small living room, I can't watch his TV as it really is too high for such a small space.

EncroachingLoaf · 22/04/2022 21:06

Mine is on the wall, at eye level though. It has freed up a lot of floor space in a small living room.

It doesn't look beautiful, but it didn't when it was on the TV unit either! We all enjoy watching it or playing games on it so it's in the room one way or another.

I prefer it on the wall as it's not in the way anymore and the kids aren't forever knocking into it. I wouldn't put it above a fireplace though as it would be too high.

CuriousCatfish · 22/04/2022 21:11

Everyone knows a true MNer doesn't own a TV. It's all about the bookcases on MN.

Ours is above the fireplace
but behind an antique mirror
if the tv is off, it looks like a mirror
if it’s on, you just watch tv
best thing we have ever done

I couldn't agree more 👆🏻

MistyGreenAndBlue · 22/04/2022 21:23

Limoux · 22/04/2022 19:45

Thats is almost impossible to comprehend how awful it is

Words fail me

Oh I dont know, I think that's rather clever. But ONLY if it truly looks like just a mirror when it's off. If you can actually tell it's a TV then that would be bloody awful.

But then, I love a bit of artifice. I have an optimyst fire 😂

Agree that I would find a TV that high up a strain to watch though. And horrible for neighbours on a party wall.

CareBearsCare · 22/04/2022 21:26

It depends on the dimensions of your room and size of tv.

Everyone knows a true MNer doesn't own a TV. It's all about the bookcases on MN.

Well that's because they couldn't possibly live in a house without books! They just love rifling through the old tomes on the shelves before throwing themselves down, thoroughly engrossed ... 🤔

OP I bet 80% of the people sneering about it on this thread have a 60inch and soundbar hanging over their mantel which has twigs, pebbly bits and a Live Laugh Love sign.

Pay no mind and do what you like.

HikingforScenery · 22/04/2022 21:29

That overmantle thing looks really good!
My tv won’t be going on a wall anytime soon but I do like this! I’ve no problem with tvs on wall. Not for me, not my business.

I agree that there have been some really rude comments, no need.

What was the dig about “new money” all about? Crass, really.

I have both. Is that ok?

TVs look awful on the wall. Yes, even those "disguised" as massive gilded mirrors. And definitely in a Victorian terrace where it wouldn't fit with the style of the room at all.

If it's above a fireplace you'll also be looking slightly up, as pps have said. Which is no good for your eyes or your neck.

Finally, the pp who said putting the tv on the wall was the "best thing we ever did"... WOW. Just wow. I hope that's an exaggeration!

I can't decide whether these replies are serious or sarcastic

NippyWoowoo · 22/04/2022 21:43

UhtredsLatestPaganHussy · 22/04/2022 20:17

no idea if this is serious or not!

this is me on every other reply

SunshineAndFizz · 22/04/2022 21:54

Didn't realise there were such strong opinions about TVs! Wished I'd gotten the popcorn ready before I sat and read all the replies Grin

Thanks for all the comments, given me lots to think about.

I really like the TVs in mirrors posted here and didn’t realise that they even existed. We had to fit our TVs in alcoves next to fireplaces, as there’s nowhere else to put them, so had to have fairly small ones, and I had to search everywhere to find wooden units to stand them on that were small enough to fit in the gaps. So the mirror ones would have been ideal, although the thought of sorting out the wiring with our old plaster and cost may have put me off!

CounsellorTroi · 22/04/2022 22:01

I also hate the look of TVs above fireplaces sorry!

XelaM · 22/04/2022 22:05

tvismuttsnutts · 22/04/2022 19:26

We have a mirror tv in an old house above the fireplace. It isn’t too high, we don’t get neck ache and when it’s switched off you can’t even tell we have a tv. Which I love.

Massively outing picture attached 😁

I love this! Didn't know it was even a thing

XelaM · 22/04/2022 22:06

We h e a TV on the wall and I love it. It freed up space and is easy to watch from anywhere in the room

XelaM · 22/04/2022 22:06

alloalloallo · 22/04/2022 22:07

We put ours on the wall above a fireplace. We have a stupidly shaped living room so thought it would give us more room space.

Lasted about 2 weeks before I took it down. It was just too high up and was uncomfortable to watch. I think the sofa was too close to it, but due to lay out of living room there’s not really many choices as to where sofa/tv can go.

maddening · 22/04/2022 22:11

Get rid of the fireplace and have it lower on the wall?

CounsellorTroi · 22/04/2022 22:12

You can get TVs that look like paintings

it I reckon they’d still look like TVs and you’d still have the stiff neck problem and a painting would look odd at sitting down eye level on a wall.

princesssparkle9985 · 22/04/2022 22:18

My husband had very strong opinions about this and unfortunately I feel he was right. We didn’t want a piece of furniture taking up space and ended up getting a tripod for it, perfect solution! Google “tv tripod”!
