Ask if you.vote tory and would be planning to continue to do so.. why and what do you like about the party?in the circles we mix in no one votes tory that we know of so cant ask in real life.. but there must be many who vote this way.

I am aware of some ,but by no means all of the policies etc. What I am asking is what motivates/ attracts.

I don't vote Tory but they're probably a good choice if you're wealthy, they look after the rich.

afizzysweet · 22/04/2022 09:26

I don't vote tory myself but do know a lot of tory voters.

The ones I know don't know much about their wider policies and vote based on the fact that they feel the tory party will let them keep more of their money and not give it to other people.
The same people were shocked when they found out how little was available to me for help with costs of childcare (well, there's nothing available until age 3 for me).

About 80% of the people I know that vote tory have said they will be abstaining from voting in the next GE because they can't in good conscience vote tory again after what has happened over the last 2 years. The 20% that will be voting tory are just so desperate to find excuses and to justify the behaviour of our PM, it's baffling.

The Tories are the party of self interest and of protecting individual wealth at the expense of society. But hey, they know what a woman is.

Same1977 · 22/04/2022 09:28

I don't really think anyone will answer honestly.Just like with Brexit people vote quietly as having an open opinion will get you lynched.

MoiraQueen · 22/04/2022 09:28

I wouldn't vote Tory, but I'm not sure if I can vote at all as I feel politically homeless. I guess that not voting will end up being a vote for the Tories and this may be the way they will win again.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 22/04/2022 09:29

A lot of the Tory voters I know say they can't possibly vote Tory next time. However they have said that before about particular issues and then voted Tory anyway.
Most of the Tory voters are the "I'm not really interested in politics" types, so they aren't voting on the basis of policies.

The woman comment resonates with many currently.

Incapacitated · 22/04/2022 09:31

It's partly to stop the communists getting in (and taking their money) and the assumption that the country will only have a safe paid of hands if they're on the end of a Tory's arms. It's also a belief that only decent Torys can be relied upon to keep their end up, do the decent thing and play the game. That's the morality bit. They also think we will end up poor if we try to give people in society too much money so we need to do of that and grow their businesses instead.

Incapacitated · 22/04/2022 09:31

less

scorpiogirly · 22/04/2022 09:33

The fact Boris knows what a woman is and is prepared to protects women's spaces is enough for me to steer clear of the Labour Party.

FairyCakeWings · 22/04/2022 09:34

I haven’t voted Tory yet but that doesn’t mean I won’t in future. Tbh, it’s less about what attracts me to them (or anyone else) and more about choosing the best of a bad bunch.

I can’t see how voting Labour is going to do anything beneficial for me or my family, their leader thinks that women can have penises, and they would have had us in a much longer, harsher lockdown than we had already. They’ll probably want to tax me for having a house, even though my income is low. They had the opportunity to oppose Brexit and give a voice to those of us that didn’t want it, but they didn’t have the guts. So even though I’m not at all attracted to the Conservative party, as it stands they will probably get my vote as a default.

Crazykatie · 22/04/2022 09:34

“The Tories are the party of self interest and of protecting individual wealth at the expense of society. But hey, they know what a woman is.”

Tory voters certainly are!.

afizzysweet · 22/04/2022 09:35

I wouldn't vote Tory, but I'm not sure if I can vote at all as I feel politically homeless.

I feel the same way. I'll be voting tactically for the first time. In my area, lib dems have the best chance of getting our tory MP out, so that'll be where my vote goes.

afizzysweet · 22/04/2022 09:36

FairyCakeWings You know there are more than 2 parties?

BuanoKubiamVej · 22/04/2022 09:37

People are more or less likely to vote in a particular direction depending on their philosophical position on the question of "why do some people end up very rich while others remain poor all their lives?"

People who vote Tory aren't necessarily evil as I was led to believe by my mainly socialist family. However, they are likely to believe that anyone who works hard, keeps a lookout for opportunities and isn't trying to sponge off the state will end up wealthy eventually, and the state shouldn't then take away that wealth and give it to the feckless and lazy individuals who couldn't be bothered to do all that.

Whereas people who would never vote Tory tend to believe that life stacks the cards against the poor and disadvantaged, that it's very difficult to escape from the bottom rungs of society no matter how hard you try, and that those with the privilege of having more resources and opportunities need to be compelled to share that good fortune with those who don't.

What would be your groups reaction if one of your number did say they voted Tory?

Ostracised, heckled? I wonder if there is but they don't want to say!

BingoLittlest · 22/04/2022 09:39

I don’t vote Tory but a lot of people I know do- from talking to them it’s a combination of (perceived) lower taxation, a view that the state should keep out of people’s lives unless completely necessary, perception that Labour is full of cranks and Corbyn types, not much reliance on public services and hence little interest (and not much thought given to the public services they do benefit from), habit/what they’ve always done and (largely) identity- the sort of person they are is the sort of person who votes Conservative.

CapMarvel · 22/04/2022 09:39

I'm sure they are the party for you if you are a white middle aged man with inherited money, ideally if you own a company and have some mates in the party to throw a few contracts your way regardless of whether you can actually fulfill them.

Probably helps if you don't pay too much attention to the news too.

BSJohnson · 22/04/2022 09:39

Excellent summary, @BuanoKubiamVej

sst1234 · 22/04/2022 09:40

A much debated question on the forum. 13 million people voted Tory at the last GE so there are range to reasons no doubt. People will jump at trying to correct me but it’s about what people feel that matters when it comes to voting. Here are a few:

Tories are better with economic policy (it’s all relative, Labour seem to preside over bigger disasters)

Tories are more socially conservative (Labour are too woke)

Tories will speak on women’s safe space issue (Labour won’t even say what a woman is)

Tories are more diverse in general (vs Labour when it comes to representation at the top)

Tories don’t believe in open borders (Labour give a strong impression that they do - Corbyn basically advocated for this)

Tories will tax you less (than Labour at least. Though the traditional Tory voter is not happy with current levels)

Tories are better with foreign affairs (think Blair’s lie that led to millions dead in the Middle East and that it’s hard to imagine the current labour front bench interacting with foreign leaders)

Tories are the party of homeowners (Right to buy strongly cemented this)

Tories are the party of general aspirationists (again, it’s all relative. Labour are generally known for promoting a dependency culture - think subsidizing low pay with welfare rather than letting wages be set by the market at a higher level)

To sum up in one sentence - Tories are not Labour

manysummersago · 22/04/2022 09:40

Voting Conservative does not mean ‘I am in favour of everything boris does.’

My personal reason for not voting Labour is that once we reframe what a woman is, our rights (which are both hard won and extremely fragile) vanish.

but this really has been discussed to death.

FairyCakeWings · 22/04/2022 09:40

afizzysweet · 22/04/2022 09:36

FairyCakeWings You know there are more than 2 parties?

I do, and when the time comes for a GE, I may well waste a vote on one of them. It won’t make much difference.

BelleTheBananas · 22/04/2022 09:41

There are various reasons (I’m not a Tory btw):

(a) They get confused about what previously happened under governments of different stripes. I know someone who votes Tory because she thinks that the 3 Day Week happened under Labour 👏👏👏 🙄
(b) They are economically conservative think that taxes/spending should be kept to a minimum
(c) They are socially conservative and dislike foreigners/gay people
(d) Their family has always voted Tory and they’re not minded to change.

I don’t agree with this worldview and would far rather pay more taxes for improved public services/childcare/support/schools/healthcare.

However, I won’t be voting for the opposition parties in the election because I need Labour (and other parties) to recognise that it has a safeguarding blind spot which needs rectifying immediately.
