How much do you spend on your weekly shop?

I am just wondering if what I spend a week on my shop is average?

£160/£200 per week for food, drinks, alcohol, dog treats and usual house stuff like cleaning products and toiletries for 2 adults and 1 child.

I shop at Tesco and don't do top up shops etc.

The reason why I am asking is, my friend thinks this is a really high amount. But they shop in different shops eg Asda/Aldi plus do top up shops. So when I pointed out she must be spending more than me, adding in petrol etc to get to different shops, plus more time going to different places. She was adamant she wasn't. I get home delivery.

Thanks very much wise ones

Sounds high to me as I spend that but for me and 4 kids (no partner) in Tesco’s

Startuplife · 20/04/2022 20:46

Personally I think that’s a lot. We shop in Aldi and for 2 adults spend £50 a week (was less until a few months ago)

That covers 3 meals a day plus treats and we eat lots of veg and meat daily.

MammaWeasel · 20/04/2022 20:48

Sounds high to me, we budget 100 per week for three adults and two cats. We do shop in Aldi and Asda though. Grin

Nosetickle · 20/04/2022 20:48

Between £100-£150 a week for a family of four plus a cat.

ZenKaleidoscope · 20/04/2022 20:48

I spend £90 that's on two adults and two children. I shop at Aldi (for top ups) and Morrisons weekly delivery shop.

Yours sounds really high.

HeadToToesNo · 20/04/2022 20:49

I spend about £120 a week to feed my family of 2 adults and 2 children, from Tesco. I meal plan and am pretty organised, so don't need to do top up shops which has really brought the food bill down.

Noglassjustthebottleandastraw · 20/04/2022 20:49

Thanks @AHungryCaterpillar @Startuplife interesting to read. I cook everything from scratch and meal plan.

That's really rally high OP. That's £640 a month MINIUM! Don't you go to a poundland for cleaning products? Stock up once a month?

Order from Asda and try Aldi!

MrsJBaptiste · 20/04/2022 20:50

2 adults, 2 teens and we spend £120 on our large weekly shop plus £80 on a weekend top up. Generally go to Asda or Tesco.

That covers all breakfasts, lunches, dinners - we take pack ups to work as do the boys to school and college.

merryhouse · 20/04/2022 20:50

In 2021, averaging 3.4 adults in the household, we spent £4800 on food.

Mostly in Tesco, walking sometimes and driving 1.4 miles each way twice a month so as to take advantage of the 10% discount which you can't get on deliveries.

Didn't buy any alcohol though, no pets, and we were being not frugal but more careful than we used to be.

MrsJBaptiste · 20/04/2022 20:51

And we meal plan for the weekly shop but the weekend top up is booze, crisps, chocolate, pizzas, etc.

luxxlisbon · 20/04/2022 20:51

£200 a week for 2 adults and a child is very high.
If you’re comfortable and happy to spend it then who cares, but it is absolutely on the very high end.
Even when I do Ocado food shops it’s about £80/£100 and that’s for more like 10 days plus maybe extra £20 in fresh food towards the end for 2 adults and one child.

Sleepingboynexttome · 20/04/2022 20:51

I spend that amount in Waitrose every week including top ups for what I’m missing for each meal so it sounds very expensive if you shop in Tesco.

actually, I just made an order so here’s what I bought for 117.

£800 a month on groceries for 2 adults and 1 child seems pretty high to me. But if you can afford it that's all that matters.

Noglassjustthebottleandastraw · 20/04/2022 20:52

Thanks everyone, much appreciate all your responses. I honestly thought my number was what everyone spent on a food shop. Confused as to where I am going wrong.

This has actually been a hot topic for me lately as for some reason we cannot bring our food shop down. We are currently £160 per week and usually another £15 throughout the week on top ups then we get 1 take away a week at around £20. That is for 2 adults and 2 toddlers. We shop in a few different shops, Aldi, Tesco, m&s and poundshop for cleaning products. I really don't know what we do wrong but I would love to get it down a bit

Redwinestillfine · 20/04/2022 20:53

Super high. I know prices have gone up but wow. I used to spend £70 odd now with increases its more like £100-£120. I usually menu plan.

WhatsitWiggle · 20/04/2022 20:54

Ours is about £120 a week, 2 adults plus teen DD - that covers food for her lunches, and for our lunches too 5/7 days. Milk is separate (another £8/week) as is cat food (£20/month). Main shop at Tesco. We do have top-ups but overall it's £450-£500 a month.

Yours does sound on the high side.

LazyDoll · 20/04/2022 20:55

I spend £150-160 for 2 adults and 3 children (2 of these hungry teenage boys). No top up shops worth mentioning. Tescos. Meal plan. Pack ups/lunches for all of us too.

LilacPoppy · 20/04/2022 20:55

That’s an very excessive amount. Our family is twice your size and we spend £140/£150 a week across Asda and Morrisons.

WanderlyWagonInWales · 20/04/2022 20:55

I spend around £120-130 a week including extra bread and milk shops. This feeds me, dh and our 3 lads (17,15 and 10). My boys do not get full, they get tired of eating. This amount covers breakfasts and dinners for everyone, packed lunches for me and dh and all cleaning and toiletry products. I shop at Tesco and I meal plan, bulk buy and take advantage of reductions and staff discount to maximise savings (I work on the tills)

BitOutOfPractice · 20/04/2022 20:56

I spend £70 a week for two adults. Maybe £100 when it’s a boozy week. And that’s Waitrose!

LilacPoppy · 20/04/2022 20:56

Actually we are 3 times the size , thought you had 2 dc!

KitKat1985 · 20/04/2022 20:56

That sounds a lot to me. I also get Tesco home deliveries once a week. We're a family of 2 adults and 2 kids. No pets. We spend about £100-£120 a week for all food, toiletries and cleaning products. I've limited myself to only buying one bottle of wine a week now though as alcohol pushes the bill up massively. We do get one take-away a week though on top of our weekly shop.

Fairislefandango · 20/04/2022 20:57

That's quite a lot! Including a little mid-week top-up, I probably spend £130 - £150 for 2 adults and 2 teenagers. I do almost all my weekly shop in Aldi, and add a few bits from Booths, but they are literally next door to each other so it doesn't cost me any more in petrol.
