How much do you spend on your weekly shop?

Noglassjustthebottleandastraw · 20/04/2022 20:44

I am just wondering if what I spend a week on my shop is average?

£160/£200 per week for food, drinks, alcohol, dog treats and usual house stuff like cleaning products and toiletries for 2 adults and 1 child.

I shop at Tesco and don't do top up shops etc.

The reason why I am asking is, my friend thinks this is a really high amount. But they shop in different shops eg Asda/Aldi plus do top up shops. So when I pointed out she must be spending more than me, adding in petrol etc to get to different shops, plus more time going to different places. She was adamant she wasn't. I get home delivery.

Thanks very much wise ones

This has actually been a hot topic for me lately as for some reason we cannot bring our food shop down. We are currently £160 per week and usually another £15 throughout the week on top ups then we get 1 take away a week at around £20. That is for 2 adults and 2 toddlers. We shop in a few different shops, Aldi, Tesco, m&s and poundshop for cleaning products. I really don't know what we do wrong but I would love to get it down a bit

Totally fascinated by the amount you spend on food! Toddlers don't really have huge portions so most of that will be for the adults. Do you cook from scratch? I can't understand how anyone is spending such a large amount on food wow. What do you all do for a living??

ItsMutinyontheBunty · 20/04/2022 20:58

Mine was similar when STBXH lived here. Rarely under £160 a week! (He drank a lot of beer which increased it a fair amount). Now I’m a single parent (one child, one pet) it’s down to about £80 after pay day then £60 other weeks. I do weekly deliveries because I have a special diet and I just can’t get everything I need from the cheaper shops. I tried going to two but it was too much faff and it was tiring (I have a disability).

Do you buy lots of branded stuff? Do you meal plan? I’ve found compromising on the former and doing the latter including lunches has cut my costs. I also batch cook and freeze stuff which helps.

HorribleHerstory · 20/04/2022 21:00

I don’t meal plan, but then I don’t do a weekly shop either, for me shopping weekly is a false economy, I can’t take advantage of offers properly and food isn’t fresh enough by the end. I spend an average of £400 a month for five, two are teenagers who eat a lot. That includes all lunches, but does not include £20-40 a month for alcohol and that we eat out or get a takeaway once every couple of weeks, lunch or dinner depending on what we are doing.

Baystard · 20/04/2022 21:01

Sounds high-ish OP 🤷

I prob spend £100/week max at the moment including weekly Tesco top-up £20/wk, fortnightly Aldi big shop £120 every 2wks, and M&S every few weeks (£60-80 every 3 or 4 weeks). We eat pretty well for that.

I can do it for me less if I omit M&S and Tesco.

Noglassjustthebottleandastraw · 20/04/2022 21:02

We are lucky that we can afford it. But I am still shocked that I am so high, compared to reading the above posts. For alcohol I buy 2 bottles of wine a week. For cleaning products I buy 1 bottle of multi purpose Tesco cleaner and tesco anti bac wipes.

I would rather the money was in my purse than to Mr Tesco.

Depends on the type and number of pets and how much alcohol you drink I guess! But we spend a similar amount.

Noglassjustthebottleandastraw · 20/04/2022 21:04

@ItsMutinyontheBunty no I don't buy a lot of branded stuff.

giggbig · 20/04/2022 21:05

That seems high but I don't have a dog or drink much.

Noglassjustthebottleandastraw · 20/04/2022 21:06

@JustBkind one dog so I buy him 2 packs of dog treats. I buy me and dh 1 bottle of wine each, so 2 bottles of wine.

I can do the shop for about 90 for two adults and 2 DC. That's without alcohol unless it's a couple of the cocktail tins for 1.50

I tend to batch cook so some weeks I just use the mince I have made and frozen and only have to use pasta. Some nights pasta and pesto. We never get takeaways though I occasionally (once a week) buy a sandwich for lunch.

I shop in Lidl

Svara · 20/04/2022 21:10

I spend £50 on an adult and a teen who eats more than me. I don't buy alcohol. We have cats but their food bought online. Not much in the way of household products and toiletries, all very cheap and last ages (included in £50).

LunaMuffinTop · 20/04/2022 21:14

I spend £50 a week but that is food for Dh and I and our 5 cats and 1 dog I don’t do any top up shops and we do home delivery from Tesco every weekend.

PickAChew · 20/04/2022 21:15

Currently spending 200-250 for 3 adults and a man sized teen. That's food, basic toiletries, cleaning stuff and booze. Main shops M&S and waitrose with occasional ocado for the dwindling amount of stuff that only they sell.

Butterflymosaic · 20/04/2022 21:18

Wow how I could dream of having that amount to spend! I’m £25 per week for myself and DS. I shop at Aldi. I don’t buy alcohol or meat, maybe switching to some veg meals would help you?

Butterflywingspan · 20/04/2022 21:23

Startuplife · 20/04/2022 20:46

Personally I think that’s a lot. We shop in Aldi and for 2 adults spend £50 a week (was less until a few months ago)

That covers 3 meals a day plus treats and we eat lots of veg and meat daily.

Could you share your receipt or shopping list and meal plan? Thanks!

Babyboomtastic · 20/04/2022 21:23

We do about 3 Tesco deliveries a month and then top up in Waitrose.

The Tesco orders are usually £70-100, and top ups can be anywhere from £15 to £50. It works out at just over £100 a week on average for me, husband and 2 young children.

We vaguely meal plan, buy a lot of branded stuff and largely buy what we fancy. We dont tend to buy alcohol though.

Unless you are eating fillet steak every night, and buying ultra expensive wine, I'm not sure how you are so spending so much.

dumdumduuuummmmm · 20/04/2022 21:26

3 adults and 1 teen. 3 dogs, 1 old cat. About £300 a week. That is dinners for at least 3 a night. Lunch for 1 or 2 a day. I must be living in a parallel universe as I couldn't get it below maybe £250 if I tried.

Bournetilly · 20/04/2022 21:26

Around £90-£100 per week for 2 adults, toddler and 2 cats. We buy lunch from the shop on days we’re working and have a takeaway once a week.

Mum2jenny · 20/04/2022 21:27

We are similar OP in our expenditure, but it’s for 2 adults and 1 dog, however we only shop every 7-10 days.

MaryBeardsShoes · 20/04/2022 21:29

Seems quite high to me we spend £80-90 per week at Tesco for two adults and two dogs. We could easily make it up to that, I suppose.

Tohaveandtohold · 20/04/2022 21:30

We now spend around £110 per week, it was less before. That’s 2 adults and 2 children, it includes lunch for 3 of us as the little one gets lunch at nursery already included in the nursery cost.
Mostly shop at Aldi and top up sometimes at Tesco

Tohaveandtohold · 20/04/2022 21:32

I would like to see the meal plan as well.

the80sweregreat · 20/04/2022 21:33

Too much!
Only two of us to feed, no pets, but the prices seem to be huge lately :(
Everything has gone up

ReadtheReviews · 20/04/2022 21:34

One adult, one child, one baby = £70-90 Morrisons
If I'm good, I do Aldi first and then top up at Morrisons and it = £50-70.

LaWench · 20/04/2022 21:37

Avg £80 pw. 2 adults and 2 children including school lunches. We spend the same as we used to but buy cheaper cuts of meat and less of it.
We shop at Lidl, go every 10 days or so.
