How much do you spend on your weekly shop?

Noglassjustthebottleandastraw · 20/04/2022 20:44

I am just wondering if what I spend a week on my shop is average?

£160/£200 per week for food, drinks, alcohol, dog treats and usual house stuff like cleaning products and toiletries for 2 adults and 1 child.

I shop at Tesco and don't do top up shops etc.

The reason why I am asking is, my friend thinks this is a really high amount. But they shop in different shops eg Asda/Aldi plus do top up shops. So when I pointed out she must be spending more than me, adding in petrol etc to get to different shops, plus more time going to different places. She was adamant she wasn't. I get home delivery.

Thanks very much wise ones

About £30 a week for 1 adult and I’m not budgeting to manage that

Forgot this includes 1 cat. Gobsmacked at how much PP are spending on groceries and then complaining about the cost of living

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 21/04/2022 00:22

About £80 for two adults and one young adult child. I have cat food and litter on top of that.

We mainly shop at Lidl and go to Sainsburys if we need anything branded.

Scottishskifun · 21/04/2022 00:24

As others have said your quite high that's what I spend on a fortnightly sainsburys shop but we get top ups of bread and cheese in between.

Would also check out your local butcher for meat packs we get them delivered and freeze them into portions 1 will do us about 8 weeks if I add on mince and its about £40.

Other things is switching to stuff like turkey mince (healthier and cheaper) for a meal or having a veggie meal. Steak to us is a treat not a weekly occurance. Using red lentils is also a great way to make mince go further. Pork tenderloin is cheap to buy and quick to cook in the oven or on the hob. Little switches like this will save you money.

I did an aldi Easter shop and was £100 but that included a large beef joint and a leg of lamb as I did a large easter lunch!

IncessantNameChanger · 21/04/2022 00:44

I buy a bottle of multi surface cleaner and dilute that down as a cleaning spray. I only use that, dettol and bleach. My cleaning costs are very low. I try to use micro fibre cloths and the blue roll from Costco to clean. I get my washing liquid and fabric conditioner in bulk at costco and decant it into smaller bottles. Loo roll from Costco. Toothpaste shampoo zafflora etc from poundland. I only go to one shop per week so I dont really shop around. I just buy lots of stuff in one go to save multiple trips. Pound land is maybe £10 once a month when I'm passing.

I think another tip is just staying away from the shops. I buy less on impulse then.

I did do a weekly click and collect every week from Tesco during the pandemic. I saved a bomb never setting a foot in Tesco.

My3bigdogs · 21/04/2022 02:38

At least 200 a week for 2 adults and 3 big dogs. Our dogs don’t eat dog food. They eat fresh meat, fish, rice, vegetables. I make their dog biscuits myself. It probably would be cheaper if we gave them dog food but I couldn’t do that.

Lex345 · 21/04/2022 04:10

It does seem quite high, but if you can afford it and are happy with what you are eating, why not? I would love a bit more freedom with the food shop.

Out of necessity, I have to be excessively careful with how much the shopping comes to. 2 adults, 3 teens, 1 cat. We shop in Aldi mainly but I do get some tinned/ food cupboard items from Asda and I buy frozen veg from Iceland.

I spend £150 as the "big shop". Bread and milk for the month is £46.50. Budget for top ups is £20/week, so approx £70 a week overall. I cook from scratch almost always. With the added twist of trying to keep energy costs down as well now 🙄We use the cheaper cuts of meat. I buy the value option where I can. I bulk out meals with pulses and veg.

Sometimes I get lucky and something I was going to buy anyway is reduced (yesterday I got beef and pork mince in Aldi for £2.09 as it had 30% off. I made a bolognaise with it which will do 2 meals for 5 of us).

Cost of meal= £4.89, including spaghetti and garlic bread with leftover bolognaise for another meal, so 49p per head. I havent included the costing for salt, pepper, mixed herbs or veg oil as I buy these for the month and obviously for more than one meal, its about 10p worth I imagine if being pedantic about cost. I use a little margarine to make garlic butter and sometimes a little grated cheese on top, you could add on another 20p for these if being pedantic. I can use the leftovers with half a cheap bag of pasta-29p- for pasta bolognaise.

i know its not a full shopping list, but this is the jist of how I budget for meals :)

RagzRebooted · 21/04/2022 07:46

£110/120 a week. 2 adults and 3 teens but no packed lunches and I track alcohol and pet food separately as they come from different budgets. We do have one gluten free and I'm low carbing, otherwise I could do it much cheaper.
A bottle of cleaning spray lasts ages here and I tend to buy the Aldi concentrate that makes up with water so does 4+ bottles.
Cat food is part raw from butcher and part ordered online at Zooplus along with cat litter.
Wine I buy myself a £4 bottle from Lidl.

TheseAreMyGoodPants · 21/04/2022 07:52

That sounds high to me. I spend between £70-£100 a week for a family of two adults and a toddler.

nannybeach · 21/04/2022 07:58

I shop in Lidl there is no top ups. Bread goes straight in the freezer, slices out as required. After £200 spend in a month,a tenner off,so that week shopping can be under £25. Sent my DDs a picture recently, small trolley,£23. They were amazed
One has DKs shops in Tesco, the other single Aldi. Always got, freezer, larder, dry, tinned, spices, basics. Can't abide waste
I like salad DH hates it,so packet less than a quid,I grow my own.

Hrpuffnstuff1 · 21/04/2022 08:10

2 adults, 2 children, and a dog average out at £300 a month, however, this month has been busy with Easter just gone.
Actual food shopping is cheaper if I do it.
Every single meal is from scratch.

Lottie4 · 21/04/2022 08:10

I've been looking at trying to cut back all round and have been keeping a record of how much I spend on food each week. Over the last few weeks it's averaging £50 pw for two adults - this includes food, toiletries, cleaning products. My two cats have their own record, which has just tipped from £15-16.50 pw.

Lottie4 · 21/04/2022 08:11

Oh, and I forgot to say wine and lager (cheaper versions)

Abouttimemum · 21/04/2022 08:14

£100 a week for everything, including top up shops, two adults and one child. Could do it cheaper if we needed to I expect but it’s ok for now.

BitOutOfPractice · 21/04/2022 08:26

AlistairCamel · 20/04/2022 23:12

£80/week for two adults and three small chickens

@AlistairCamel I don’t know why but that has REALLY made me laugh. Thank you!! 😂

AReallyUsefulEngine · 21/04/2022 09:10

@IncessantNameChanger thank you. Interesting looking at what you do.

There’s no lunches there though, and I don’t see how some can be enough quantities to feed 6 e.g. the cheese for 18 portions can’t be enough from a 400g block (which google tells me is what the 1.79 Lidl pack is) especially if one of those meals is lasagna or 1 pack of onions to do 3 meals for 6 of you.

Nor do I think £10 is enough for butter, fruit (which for 6 of you even basic fruit is going to add up), salad, extra vegetables (e.g. to go in the bolognese sauce) and things you don’t need to buy every week - oil, coffee, teabags, flour, sugar, lasagna sheets, herbs, toiletries. Prices have also risen since Christmas, including when the vegetables aren’t on special offer for Christmas/Easter, which means many of the prices you have listed are now more.

DoraSpenlow · 21/04/2022 09:12

I got into the habit of doing click and collect during lockdown. I like it because I can just go and check my cupboards if not sure I need something (yes, I know I can do a list to go shopping but I've never got into that habit). There are just the two of us and I have been spending around £80-£90 every 10/12 days.

DH was out on his motorbike all day yestereday so I decided to go for a wander around the shops and do the grocery shopping. I was amazed at how much extra I spent on the "Oh, that looks nice, I'll try that for a change" items.

Spent £130!! Think I had better go back to click and collect.😂

MsSquiz · 21/04/2022 09:12

Around £100 per week from Tesco plus £50 top up every other week from M&S or Waitrose (our local supermarkets) for 2 adults, 1 toddler, 2 cats

AlistairCamel · 21/04/2022 09:20

BitOutOfPractice · 21/04/2022 08:26

@AlistairCamel I don’t know why but that has REALLY made me laugh. Thank you!! 😂

😂 Glad I could be of help! When I saw a mention in thought I was going to have to come on here and write out my shopping list to prove how much I spend. 🤣🙈

Thehawki · 21/04/2022 09:26

We spend £45 a week on food and toiletries/cleaning in Lidl for two adults. Cat food we buy once a month in bulk for £20 and dog food anywhere from £25-£45 a month depending on the deals. One cat and one big dog.

Lineofconcepcion · 21/04/2022 09:31

Two adults here and we spend between 30 and 60 a week. We buy around £20 of veg from the street market and the rest is Sainsburys or Waitrose. We never buy biscuits and cakes or snacks other than popcorn. We are low consumers of alcohol. I couldn't spend £200 a week if I tried!

DinosApple · 21/04/2022 09:32

It's higher than I spend OP. Ours is between £80-120 per week for 2 adults, 2 older children. No pets. The £120 shops are rare, but include booze and some toiletries. No top up shops. We don't eat much meat though.

blackheartsgirl · 21/04/2022 09:33

I spend around 90 a week including tops up. That’s for 2 adults (dd1 is 19) and 2 teens, 1 dog and 1 Guinea pig. I also mainly cook from scratch and meal plan. I don’t drink alchohol though apart from the odd bottle of wine now and again.

i shop at Aldi and Morrisons as the two are literally next door to each other

yours seem quite high op

traintraveller · 21/04/2022 09:36

We are 80-100 a week for 2 adults and 2 big dogs. That's all food, dog stuff cleaning products, toilet roll, shampoo etc and a fair bit of alcohol. Mostly from aldi and home bargains. Its the higher amount when DH does the shopping as he buys more shite that we don't need.

MysteriousMonkey · 21/04/2022 09:38

Around £150 for a family of six. We use Lidl and Tesco. Yours does seem high!

again2020 · 21/04/2022 09:45

About £90 weekly for 2 adults 2 child although my partner does it and can be quite extravagant and buys expensive meat and alcohol, from asda or morrisons.
I'm veggie and if I was on my own with DD I reckon I could get change from £50 but I'd go to lidl.
Things have gone up massively though. I remember clearly when I first lived alone as a single person (2007/8) I went to Somerfield and spent less than £20 a week on food and never went without.
Yours does seem high.
